  1. i cut back the nettles on my land, they still move back in I'll give that a go I reckon cheers.
  2. I rate the mk3 but probably because Its the only one I've ever used. Only problem I had was at the end of last season when it started playing up whilst out. Showing signals all over the place obviously not picking up the collar. Sent it back to Deben who were really helpful but found nothing wrong with it. Turns out I had my mobile phone in a different pocket which caused interference. Might be something to bear in mind if anyone else gets the problem.
  3. Got the same here fed up of waiting for nettles to die back. Am thinking of going out with the brushcutter a few days beforehand.. Anyone ever tried it? do they move back in after a couple of days or do they just move on?

I usually make sure I know my zero range then go to the pitch for a good recce to see the best spots, then pace out my zero range from where I plan to hide. You could put a stick in the ground or something so you know your distance. Then I know if they're too far or not. It's well worth going out after dark with a lamp to see where there's most about. I always have more luck when I can get any breeze coming towards me. When I'm ambushing I usually take a rest out with me and set up on that so I can get a good steady sight picture and when you've bagged one don't be tempted to go and get it, J
  5. Pair of .22 theoben mk1 rapids, 1 at 40 ft/lb with vortex moderator and the other at 35 with Bsa 18" barrel and logun moderator. I just setting up the second one with NV and love em both. Previously had HW80 and an old airsporter but think these are awesome.(Both on FAC).
  6. I really rate mine and I always use it with the volume off,(it still bleeps then when you're really close) I've used it a few times recently where the ferrets had rabbits stopped up and I've found it dead accurste. Well worth it I think. Only thing that bugs me is it doesnt have a case or a clip to secure it . I have it in a pocket but I find it a pain to keep getting in and out and if i dont shut the pocket properly it falls out when I lean over setting nets and stuff. Has anyone come up with any solutions.
  7. You could always get one of them baby carrying rucksacks and embrace your maternal side :11:
  8. Thanks for all the replies guys. I got introduced to it young and I think that's what makes the difference, I grew up in Cornwall but now live in a suburb of Birmingham. I go out walking with a group of guys who claim to love the outdoors but it always amazes me how half of them couldn't tell the difference between a crow and a buzzard. We were down on some marshes in Kent recently by some MOD ranges when I saw a Harrier, the first I'd ever seen so I was quite excited(sad I know and I'm not a twitcher!). I described it to a guy who was supposed to be a warden of some kind as I wanted to kno
  9. Teacher training day and the weather was spot on so babysitting didn't sit too well. Only thing for it was to take my 6 year old out. He's been going on at me for ages but he's diagnosed with ADHD so can't stop talking at full volume and generally going berserk at the slightest thing. So I expected a fair bit of digging but what I got was the first time I've ever seen him totally focused on something, the first time I,ve ever heard him whisper and even using sign language. He can now tell you all about rabbits and wind direction etc. I reckon he learn't more that day than in 2 years of schoo
  10. Frontline seems great (but £19 from vets ) I spray it onto some rubber gloves and rub the ferrets all over. I do it about every 3 weeks unless I see any. Usually the more I work them the more they get. I try to avoid round the face but I,ve noticed thet after they've worked they get them on and in the ears and between the toes and on the muzzles but not on the body anymore. I've got a little bit of cord with a frayed end which soaks up the fromtline(sprayed in the top) and can then be dabbed right on the tick..they seem to drop off overnight.
  11. All the best mate the weathers just turned to drizzle down here so hopefully you should have a nice cold dry spell. Have a good day
  12. Thanks folks I'll be planning on keeping everyone sweet for when its too warm for the ferrets. cheers
  13. Found out last week that my favourite pitch (36 acres of woodland)has been sold to some millionaire town bloke who will no doubt fence it all in with big keep out signs and won't like the likes of me mooching about(at least until the garden makeover gets wrecked by the cute things). So was starting to panic where I'd go when I happened on spec to see a few guys working in a gateway on an area that I know rents the ground to "shooters"(the sort that pay on direct debit  ) I stopped to be friendly and mentioned I'd been ferretting, the out come was being driven around for 2 hours being s
  14. I use a mk1 and rate it massively I also find it a pretty light rifle and I've got a walnut thumbhole on it. My mate offered me his absolutely mint MFR the other day with a simmons gold 3.5-12 (I think) x 44 gold mag scope and 7 shot mag and single mag for £550. I was well keen as it is as new but I'm just having another mk1 put together on ticket and spending too much on that with night viz.I really rate them for all field work and I've had a few going back 25 years. I appreciate the air arms is probably better value for money but I've developed a real thing for the rapids. If you're kee
  15. HI, my two are exactly the same. The one is great always in the tray(I also have a triangular "hi back" tray with litter). The other is all over the place sometimes in the middle of the run. I've now got her (taken about 2 weeks) mostly in the tray sometimes 24 hours goes by and its all in the tray then it all goes to "ferret s**t" scuse the pun. I seem to have cracked it over the past couple of days and touch wood she's cottoned on. This is what i've tried. I always scoop the muck into the tray and clean where it was. I hadn't tried the lemon juice but sounds a great idea I'd been using s
  16. The one good thing I've got then is that on my first trips I do a bit of undergrowth clearing so next time round the hard bit will be done hopefully.
  17. My 2 are run ragged by my 3 kids especially my 4 yr old and as a result of that they're stupidly tame. The only problem is if I lost one there'd be a lot of broken hearts. It's great to see them one moment been pushed round in toy cars and stuff then going after rabbits like the pure little predators they are. Love em to bits they're great..
  18. I got a private garden where the veg patch and just about everything else is being destroyed by rabbits so I got the permission. Went there yesterday and the owner has a large damson tree in the lawn which has been attracting a load of foxes to eat the fruit. She watched 3 of them one night so they def eat stuff like that. I'd say its probably fox.
  19. Cheers mate week off work would be well handy right now....Have a good one. I work shifts and it would work out that each patch would get a 10 day rest in between visits just wondered if that would not be enough. I also like to get out with the lamp and rifle as well.
  20. Hi, I,ve currently got 3 permissions where its suitable to ferret. I'm a bit eager at the moment but don't want to overwork them. How much time should I leave a set in between visits. None of the landowners want total eradication so I'm just after the sport and a reasonable "harvest". None of them are swarming and (touch wood) mixy hasn't appeared.
  21. Had a good 5 hours out today with my two new jills and am well chuffed. My sandy came out attached to one and after that just couldn't get enough of it. The scores went a bit like this 3 in the bag 1 slipped the nets 5 or 6 out of unnnetted holes. Still the ferrets are happy(been asleep ever since) and I'm happy with my first ferret netted rabbits. Its a really steep learning curve and i'm still below the bottom of it. Thanks for the advice some of you folks gave me the other day it all really helped cheers
  22. thanks for the great replies guys - keep 'em coming! -guiness, how does your vizsla work and what do you mean it was hard to get it working? purely as a side note, how hard is it to find working vizsla breeders? I don't have mine anymore I had to pass her on(to a working home) due to the usual boring domestic type stuff. Still enough of that. She was great with the obedience but was almost scared of game . This eventually became a good thing as she'd never even think of chasing so getting her to drop was always easy. She eventually cottoned on but my difficulty was that I couldn't
  23. I had a wirehaired Viszla bitch and she was very easy to obedience train as she was so eager to please (not as easy to get working though)my friend has always had weimaraners both were for rough shooting. In a nutshell I'd say that the Viszla suited me better because they are quite a timid dog (with regards handling) and need a gentler approach just a sharp "hush" sound was enough to make her cower and she'd never been struck. Where as the weimars my mates always had suit him better because he's an impatient short tempered bully (and he'd admit to this) and they always seem to need a firmer h
  24. I just been to Mercia Ferret Rescue in Coventry (M6 Jnct2) and they have about 50 for homing. The youngest were born in may and all are well handled. I know its not gloucester but don,t think its much more than an hour an halfs drive mate.
  25. Thanks for all the advice if not too wet I shall be out for nother go tomorrow.. I'll be more switched on with tightening the collars though .Cheers all
