No not all of oz is open, where i go (and live) it's mainly ruff ground( broken ground) and the runns are quick as it's many bushy area's i hunt and the prey is lost buy the dog (out of sight) if not able to keep up and catch it, some places are open ground but most bunny's, foxes and hares stick close to the cover, i've found.

Are whippets ok at coursen the hare and fox and possible feral cat???? or are they to small and need to be crossed to a bigger breed (or harder breed)to be able to tackel anything bigger than a rabbit? i used to run on ruff ground and prefur a animal with thicker legs(and will do in the near future), just my way of thinking. any views are muchly sort after

Cheers, so i should use a locater on my dog, and let her work it out for her self and i go for the ride i thought having a collar on might get snagged on a tree root or hinder entry and exit for the dog. but i'll get a locater so i'm not gessing where my dog is if she gets introuble. got any idea on what one is worth?

Do foxes bolt often when a dog is down the den? and did people run them down with lurchers preban after they bolted or shot with the shot gun? Do den doggers(the hunters) prefure if the dog bolts the fox or you dig down to the fox and deal with it? sorry i my sound like an idiot, but i'm still learnin about what to do before i put my bitch down a den for the first time. regards cathunter

True that Gripper, I thought about doublin the wire up to make the holes 1x1n1/2 but that doubles the weight of the trap and half's the number of traps but if i'm going to do the job, i should do it properly, right from the start. I was going to putting hessan around the bait end of the trap to stop them pawwin the bait and give the cought animal a bit of shelter till i get to the trap and deal with it. what do you think cheers

Why not make a small cage out of your wire stick a cat in and see if it can get out. Cats do vary in size and make sure you don't hurt the cat. Thanks para1 should of thought of that one my self been a while since i've been trappping, just got to get the old grey matter working again, CHEERS

I seen on tv a good couple of years back that a bloke bred brother to sister border collies for 7 or 9 gen, and he never had a problem, all the dogs that wher bred from where used in agilaty trials. and it changed the way i thought abought inbreeding so i guess it starts at the base line,1 if the perants have a hidden fault it may or may not turn up 2 depending on how heavly inbreed or not, 3 the mix of the geanes so i looked up inbreeding and line breeding on the net after reading every ones posts each to there own oppinion

HI, Don't know if anynone knows the answer but i've got a lot of 2x3 dog wire netting that i am going to try and make some fox cage traps out of.(and don't want to buy more netting if i don't have to) I have one roll at four ft high and half roll at three foot high. and i want to make them collapable and light so they anr easy to transport. Any way dose any one khow if a cat could get it's head through or its hole body? as i want to make a multie pourpouse trap, as the old trap that i did catch feral cats in was to small . would it be better having the wire 2 wide and 3 high or the other

Hi Marky r found a site on the internet called 'alleycats'. they sound like a wierd bunch, but if you look on there site it has demo's of how to set cage traps, i got my idea's of the trap door for my design of there, hope it helps regards cathunter

not trying to be a smart a.... but if you get a roo, don't tell people that you'll use it for dog mate. it's illegal unless you have a culling licence. and shoot them, with amin cal of 243 if i remembor right. vic rules i think where you from landl10? i live in vic

thanks all. just letting you know, i'm getting his wrigglers fozen on sunday. least then i'll know if he is a viable sire or not (count wise) and i don't have to worry about finding a bitch asap. thought about it and going to look for a large whippet bitch or a whippt x grey. as my dog has stamina plus and i thought the whippet is quicker in short semi open areas for hunting, and they might average each other out. i'll go for the pups with thicker legs as i hunt over afair bit of ruff ground. and i personaly like the smaller running dogs but they all have there place, sound good?

hi all. got a half dalx 1/4 lab. he's my best dog to date as an all rounder. put him under the heading old dog keeping the blood. good on rabbits, great on finding and baileng cats ond would grab a fox if he got close enough, only my opinion that a gundogxruning dog would make a good all rounder if you get the right mix of genes. thats the way i'n wanting to breed.

in oz they can use any dog to hunt pigs i.e. stags(greyx deer, or there abouts) bully x grey. bullarabs(bull x greyx greman short hair pointer mix). mastiff x dane. wolf hound cross, staff cross. kelpie pure or cross healers. wide range of dogs. but from what i saw of my dogs sire was posible mastiff cross black lab. The only way i will know is the pups (if they happen) as i know every thing else about his breeding but not the pig dog bit
