  1. I've whacked quite a few Pheasants with airguns over the years and not had any problems, if you want one to eat and have permission then bag one, but it has to be a headshot, or the pellets will bounce off their chests like a bullet proof vest :D

yeah i thought their chests must be pretty solid but i was using a .20 pellet which flies very flat and seems to drill in as would a .177 and requires very little hold over/under but it did the business on this one

  2. i love pheasant too this one was a nice reminder just how tasty they are  it only had body showing as its head was obscured by leaves and twigs of a bush but i think it was spying on me as i was just getting ready to pack up then i spotted it and raised the gun, but its body and chest was in full view as it was streching up tall i only ever take head shots on everything but as i had no clear view of where to place the pellet i decided on a chest shot and the way it went down it did the business there and then it never ran just fell sidewards flapped a few times then nothing, if i had taken a neck shot im sure it would of past clean through and made it run and die slowly in my opinion neck shots are a lot more risky than a heart shot and on gutting it i could see the heart had been grazed badly but not quite pierced as i wanted, but i was,nt far off and the damage it did do dropped it instantly......if i had to do again it would probably be very difficult to pull off twice admitted but if you have time to study them you can work out if you will maybe be sucessfull or not, but as they don,t give you time to study them it was a slight risk, but think a neck shot would of resulted in it running in woods and me losing it as i had no dog to run it down,i have been pheasant shooting a long time ago and have had a brace given to me for for myself as me and my uncle where just the beaters, only to find the shotgun had only put 2 tiny shot into one of the birds that was not into any vital organs only just under the top layer of muscle, i think the minute it was hit it panicked and fell to the ground which in my view would of done more damage than the pellets due to the height it fell from and the thump it made on inpact ...

  3. hi there, im using a gunpower stealth the mega capacity buddy holds way over 350 shots may be more its 200 bar charge i just top back up with a stirrup pump after each session the gunpower makers say you can get 250 to 300 bar in one before the valve bleeds it back out but i always top upto 180/200 max and its fine i always have a quick check on zero before each session at the zero range of 30 yrds then i know im ready to go but in this case it was low by an inch and needed to come right by 3 clicks now when im rested and and not out of breath with thumping heartbeat:laugh: it will go indide a 5p size circle every time but when i zero i dont just want that will do.... i want pellet after pellet striking same hole everytime:thumbs:

  4. just a question, does anyone actually check their zero on every outing ?. I recently been out a few times but zero spot on at 30 yrds then today i go out and its slightly adrift not by much but scope has not been knocked or touched in any way, i know some people say just topping up your buddy bottle if you go slightly over....for instance mine is 200 bar but have been told if i went over by 5 to 10 bar it will decrease in power and make the pellets strike lower until the pressure in bottle gets back to or under 200 bar. most buddy bottles wont allow over filling mine included but can maybe go a fair bit over but it has a blow out valve that will stop this after so much pressure, i always top up to 200 bar and stop so its very unlikely it was over pressure that caused zero to be off but in the end i had to reajust the windage and elevation turrets a touch its now perfect again but unless gun gets knocked and quite hard surely the zero should,nt move

    hi buddy

always best to check your zero before shooting live quarry

as in your case "just in case"

my AAS410K recomend fill is 190 bar,but i fill to 160/170 and use to 100/110 bar as this is its sweet point

    what rifle you using?

    regards

  5. not sure if pheasants are too much for air rifles as you see lists of airgun quarry and although they are not listed once plucked they are not that much bigger than a fat woodie, they even say hares are too big for an air rifle don,t see why yes they are taller and long legged but the head in my opinion is very simlar sized to a rabbit although i have never shot one lots of people do. went to shoot some bunnies today but after a long wait not one showed so just thinking about packing up as light was fading, when i saw lots of pheasants walking a hedge line close to where i was sat, they were obviously going to the woods i was next to which is where they roost. the landowner did say they have lots of pheasnts about and if one obliges i can shoot the odd couple  the only one that was close enough was a hen pheasant and was approx 25 -30yards away, it had stopped and was staring over to where i were as they are very warey birds. its head looked tiny through scope even on full mag plus there were twigs in the way i decided to go for a chest shot and looked through scope for which seemed like 5 mins but was less than 30 secs in reality i worked out where i thought the heart was and pulled trigger .... a puff of feathers and sideways it fell, it flapped wings a few times then became still. on picking it up i noticed blood from the beak indicating a heart and lung area shot and by the way it went down would,nt be surprised if the heart had been pierced right through, i was quite chuffed and looking forward to it as have not had pheasant for years :D

  8. cheers all  , i always used to leave them where they dropped but over the years i have had 3 foxes run off with the odd one  this annoys me its as if they are lying in wait for a free meal i know its not and everyday occurance but it makes you nervous on leaving them till you pack up lol.......anyone else had this happen ?

  9. Hiya Deano.

Congrats on the new permission mate, good new's.

The Farmer got the results he wanted too, good shooting.

Might pay next time your in a static position, to stay put after you drop a bunny, as they will pick up on you trudging back and forward, make the others nervous to come out and feed.

SP for some good shooting buddy

    Bill.

  10. got new permission this week the farmer said ok i,ll give you a go i know its sometimes difficult to get rabbits with air rifles unless your hidden up in ambush.....so he said have a go see how you get on this afternoon, so i rushed home to get gear but only had 3 hours of light left so anyway i got to the spot saw a few sitting out memorised their position and walked to within 25 to 30 yrds of where they were and hid up in hedge thinking come on i have to get some.......

then after 10 mins first one showed 30yrds away but in the rush to get one mis judged it and missed arggggggh:wallbash: anyway he was opposite where i was sitting as the ones i saw earlier were along the the hedge where i was sat but further along so waited once again and then another showed he knew something was up but within a few mins settled and started to feed i aimed a tad under the eye as it was just under my zero and down he went  yes 1st one in the bag and quickly got him and sat back down another 20 mins past and the same one i missed first off came back out or if it wer,nt him it come out in exactly same spot this one too was just under my zero range and ajusted to suit whack he too fell .....im now thinking im on a roll waited for ages but no more showed but right down the hedge about 100 yards more were fedding so decided to move...i walked down within range but they hopped in hedge so once again i sat and waited by this time light was almost gone then just saw the outline of one run out and start feeding through the scope it was just perfect so aimed and guessed exactly 30 yrds my zero yes i was right he too fell without a twitch when i picked up it had past through the eye...i rang farmer and said i got 3 he was happy and said i can come when ever i can and offered more land if i do a good job as the land he does,nt own is,nt worth knowing about theres thousands of acres

ok [bANNED TEXT] will give that a go cheers i hate wasting good meat so if it goes wrong dog gets it anyway lol laugh.gif

  12. have just watched it mate, they just don,t know what to do next wallbash.gif.......im a stealth owner and it would take some doing to do fatal damage to a person with one but they do try to rub it in. its just the government want them banned they love and sit and watch all this s**t but we pay the price. Even police have said they don,t want a ban because it would trebble their hours and work load day to day and they have enough to do already without looking for every airgun thats gone underground it would spiral out of control and would be more gun crime than ever when in actual fact it is very few and far between any crime involving air guns other than the usual kids teenagers etc who know no better, compared to other countries we virtually don,t have any problems. what these mp types don,t think about its our hobbies things we,re passionate about, but if a ban ever did happen would they say oh sorry here is £500 or what ever you paid for your gun when you hand it in...ha would they f**k, they may like golf or fishing or what ever they do in their spare time but how would they feel if boot was on the other foot saying that what they are passionate about is going to be banned it does make your blood boil at times thumbdown.gif

  13. I'm looking to get an air rifle and before shooting rabbits etc ill need somewhere to pratice im unsure though on where any local shooting ranges are im from Harlow in Essex so if anyone has heard of that area and knows somewhere close by your your help would be appreciated :)

hi mate....go on google and tap in pete,s airgun farm it explains all you need to know but you,ll need basa or basc insurance basa about £20 a yr basc around £45 to 50 but worth it, he is in essex near chelmsford close to m11 and has ranges and air rifle hunting area,s for a daily fee hope this helps ...................thumbs.gif

  14. recently got my gunpower stealth back in .20 cal used to be .22 thought smaller cal be more accurate and more deadly and i was right, and believe it or not at 200 bar max fill after 300 to 400 shots still had 120 bar left pretty good i think... but although these guns are quiet i wanted it quieter still so i measured diameter of original silencer of approx 45 mm and found one of the other halfs deoderant cans almost empty but sorted that out laugh.gif it had same inner diameter so i cut off the end and slid it half way down original silencer was good tight fit and added another good 4 + inches of hollow cylinder to the originalthumbs.gif i drilled a 8mm hole in the end same as original hole now whole silencer around nine and half to ten inches in total and with main silencer inside the end of the original acts as a baffle about half way along then another 4 or 5 inches of hollow chamber then a concaved end of can extension with 8mm hole and covered in real tree vinyl cammo tape to match rest of gun so it looked the part......i took it to woods for real test without silencer rang out like a .410 shotgun with silencer deadly quiet infact the biggest noise was the striking hammer against the air bottle valve which is quiet anyway but virtually no muzzle blast what so ever....walked round the woods for a while saw squirrels but far away so sneaked close to tree and waited first 20 mins nothing then beech mast husks started dropping so giving away their position i could,nt get clear shot because of leaves twigs etc but after a while a shot presented itself about 15 to 20 yards up and same in distance aimed half inch low and whack squirrel fell with a thud shot entered just under the eye, in the quiet woods the pellet strike was loud so silencer working perfectly... in the excitement of retrieving the squirrel another that had probably wondered what was going on ran along a branch and sat giving the alarm call so slowly raised the gun once more took aim thud another perfect head shot the sound seems more pronounced with new homemade silencer extension on so 2 mins 2 squirrels i was quite chuffed so walked about a bit more and saw a pigeon land on a branch hidden by leaves so sneaked up and there it was one of this years youngsters fully grown but no white or green neck markings yet took aim and thud another perfect shot down it crashed i never really noticed the sound of pellets striking as much as i do now which says a quick homemade silencer extension makes all the difference...recommend trying for any silencer other than really skinny ones lolthumbs.gif ...........

  15. I freakin' love decoying pigeons!! It's all about getting feet on the deck and shot placement for us Air Gun types, far more challenging than with a 12g Howitzer! A real challenge!

In your case, with an opportunity all ready there with the warrens, you could always drop 4 or 5 shells, 2 up right, three feeding, a few meters from the warren. Keep them about a meter or 2 apart and in no specific pattern except for approximately facing in the direction of the wind, if it's blowing, the real ones will want to join!

Bits of advise that can help are

    1. Try and use flocked decoys if you can get them, a bit more expensive, but far more realistic, scats do them at about £3.00 each, if you want to buy individually.

    2. If you see pigeons over the pattern but not landing, or are jinking away at the last minute, move the decoys about a bit, there's something they don't like about it.

    3. As many have mentioned, including Phantom to me, try putting UV pen on the decoys around the base of the neck and in flecks along the back. Attracted more to my pattern.

If you get it right, pigeons will land at regular intervals from just after sun rise to an 1 - 2 hours before sunset. Good luck with it!

cheers mate nice info i,ll check the deeks out only have a few been with shotguns longtime ago but never with air rifles ...cant wait thumbs.gif

  16. Go back a couple of pages, there was the same (or very similar question asked the other day)

It certainly can be done. Dead Birds work a treat, also there is a useful tip regarding how they see in the Ultra-Violate Spectrum. I put a longish post on the subject a while ago, I'll see if I can find it and link to it.

    Phantom

cheers mate will check that out thumbs.gif

  17. I had a go earlier this year on a field of peas.

Set up just behind my house one evening about 6pm.

Used a few dead birds for decoys and they worked a treat!

Birds have to be feeding well and you dont get long on a shot!

I managed about 7 and called it quits.

If I had been able to use the 12G I recon I would have had 30 in the time I was there!!!!!

sounds good mate i,ll give it a go anyway you never know if not just stick to ambushing em in woods under their favourite tree,s thumbs.gif

  18. anyone had any luck decoying woodies with air rifle ?......i was out the other day the landowner had cut the hay and it exposed all the warrens in middle of field so i thought errr easier to spot bunnies now so set up in the hedge 25 to 30 yards from the warren then waited it was,nt long before one popped out but he was close to hole so waited for him to venture further from safety it worked he moved a few yards then a .20 pest control entered one eye and exited the othergunsmilie.gif he dropped where he stood so i quickly got him and went back to hide waited another 10 to 15 mins or so seemed much longer when another jumped out a hole being chased by another they chased around in circles then stopped and started to nibble it was getting late with only an hour or two of light left when a woodie soon followed by a second and then a third landed right within range 20 yards out to left of feeding rabbits sods law i thoughtno.gif shall i go for another rabbit or woodie? well i went out specificly for rabbits so bagged another the other ran down hole and all three pigeons took to the air thinking what the f*** was that, it got me thinking mmm decoys as there is no crops so to speak but thought well they were eating something where the hay had just been freshly cut plus i could scatter a few handfulls of grain around deeks....worth a try i think thumbs.gif

  19. anyone know best bait for bass ? i been a lot lately loads of bass showing up i fish the river thames between estuary and QE2 bridge at dartford had a few nice ones 3 lb to 6lb but some being caught up to 15lbs mostly caught them on lugworm but one i caught had stomach full of clear shrimps so i caught a load of shrimps in local area with fine mesh net but they no good as bait did,nt get a bite but lug seems good thumbs.gif
