  1. Hi lads, New pup has picked up a taste for fox poop and there's lots of it around. Every walk he's sniffing out a couple to eat and runs off when I try to get him to drop it. Is it something he'll grow out of or a habit to break? thanks
  2. Hi lads, any recommendations for good spaniel training book? Ideally everything from basic obedience to field training. Thanks!
  3. Is this true even when they are very young pups? I have been leaving him "play" with the sheepdog out when he's not with me. He's only 10 weeks old and I am planning to to keep him in the run when I start to train him. Would that make sense?
  4. Thanks Mackay, yes that's exactly what I was worried about. Good to hear you find it a good thing.
  5. Just thought I would bump this old thread. I know a long time has passed. Ultimately I did not take the springer that was offered but have since (in the last week) picked up a new springer pup. I work from home mostly so spend a lot of time with him to bond with him etc. He gets regular breaks outside with the sheepdog and sleeps with him in the garage at night. I have built a run for him for when he's a little older but for now just want to let him be a pup and mooch around the garden with the sheepdog. I have hens in a run and when I feed them and collect eggs pup comes with me and loo
  6. New springer spaniel pup, just picked him up yesterday.
  7. Hi lads, looking to pick up a springer in the next few weeks and was thinking of repurposing a hen run I built as the dog pen. Its approx 10 foot by 8 foot. You think it's ok? thanks.
  8. Hi That kit does the whole process. I’ll explain the set up and process. As you look at the kit in the top picture consider left keg (L) middle keg (M), Right keg (R). In (R) we have a heating element and hermes coil. We heat water in that and continuously pump it into (M) where the malt barley is – this is the sparging process. Once that part is complete we pump the wort into (L) and heat the wort adding hops as required. (L) also has a heating element. Once the wort is ready we cool it using a cooling coil attached to a tap via a hose. When cooled we open the pipe at the bott
  9. Thanks very much Mickey Finn, very helpful.
  10. Thanks lads, there was a fair bit of trial and error but that was part of the fun.
  11. We got a specialist to do the stainless steel plumbing/ welding on the keg fittings. Everything else we did ourselves.
  12. Hi Lads, thought id share a project myself and a mate worked on. We built a brew system we saw on YouTube. Using old beer kegs. Cleaned polished and plumbed. We added heating elements, temp gauges Hermes coils and pumps to move between legs. We did everything ourselves, even bought steel to weld for the frame. The build was great fun and hopefully the beer will be an added bonus. We bought two voltage regulators to control the heat in the elements to make life a bit easier. Thanks for looking.
  13. The fence is fantastic. So much so that if I hit a ball out past it he stops dead on the "line". And he is obsessed with playing fetch. Also my entrance directly faces a gate into a field full of sheep ? I highly recommend the wireless fences and can pm you details of the one we got if you want. We have him trained on beep, it beeps when he approaches the range. You can set it to shock too if needed.
  14. Would be bad for him to keep him out with the sheepdog? If so why.
  15. Looks fantastic. I boned out a saddle last week and wanted to make sausages out of the trimmings but didn't get around to it so the dog ate well instead. Did you use a mincer or food processor?
  16. Hi lads, I got my first gun this year and started shooting. Opportunity has come up to take a working springer from a guy I know. This would be my first working gun dog. We have a sheepdog who currently lives outside, sleeps in the garage. He's trained on a wireless boundary fence. If I took this springer would it be bad for him to keep him out with the sheepdog and unkennelled? Could I train him on a radio fence too? I live in the countryside our house is on a large site so I like the dogs to have the run of the place. We also have a couple of free ranging hens which the she
  17. Hi lads, just bought my first shotgun, a Bettinsoli Diamond. Going through licensing process at the moment. Any thoughts or feedback on this gun? Thanks
  18. Very good info lads thanks. I knew a lad who kept beagles but had to get rid of them because every time the local church bells rang the hounds went berserk
  19. Thanks lads, have always fancied the idea of a couple of working hounds. I wouldn't be set up for a bigger pack. With just a couple of hounds and a lower chance of catching quarry would the hounds lose motivation/drive over time? Sorry if that's a silly question.
  20. Hi lads, do many people keep just a couple of hounds or is it always best to have a larger pack? Just interested to hear views. Thanks
  21. Hi guys, My two new hens are hiding in the coop (within a run). They venture out to eat and straight back in. Have had them almost one week and they are point of lay. I was thinking of locking them out of the coop for a couple of hours to get them used to outside. Is this ok or not advisable? Our sheepdog often lurks outside which probably doesn't help. thanks.
  22. Hi, His stuff is fantastic looking. You think it's for functional everyday use or decorative? Anybody got anything of his? Cheers
  23. Thanks for the replays. Just in case it makes a difference, the pond and grove is that size but the land is set in farmland with mixture of forest, crops and pasture. Stream along side it and the land is set in a valley. I'm not expecting the birds to stay there and not stray but even to see something come and go would be nice. Thanks again.
  24. Hi all, I have no experience in game keeping but lots of interest. When I was younger my dad raised and released some partridge and it was always something I would like to do. On my site I have a pond with trees and plants growing around it. The overall area is probably about 25m x 25m. There is some open water and the rest is mostly marshy ground with lots of shelter and this area borders a stream. Plenty of fairly mature trees on it, oak, ash and some others. What would be best game birds to try and introduce here, not to hunt but hopefully as a permanent feature? Thank you Ps to e
