What do you do then DottyDoo? I'm not waiting to try and shoot you down, I gave the methods that I know work but I'm open to other suggestions.
-
You know what, carry on choking your dogs, good luck.

sorry but i have to disagree ,i have yet to not to be able to get a dog of, and i do this with most breeds and on all sorts of game thousands of times , , and i have never used a breaking stick ,i have also owned dogs that have won lurcher racing ,. I agree, the vast majority don't need a breaking stick and the other methods I mentioned are more suitable but it's the only thing that will work every time. no its not ,other wise i would have to use one . Every time...meaning every dog! Presumably you don't take out fifty-sixty different dogs (mostly Bull breeds) every time you go

You should come and watch some of the dogs that do it, they hang onto that lure like their life depends on it.

LOL, tried that once with my bosses PET weimeramer that had got hold of a muntjack, did he let go? did he feck, he aslo had a shock collar to stop him leaving the boundry, but 4 lambs later the boss decided to put up a bigger fence, never know though, it MAY work on some dogs, just not in my experience. I run lure coursing days with every breed you can imagine, of the thousands of times we've done it we've always managed to get the dogs off the lure using one of those methods. Even the strongest, most extreme, headstrong dogs will let go with the proper use of a breaking stick. i won

UNFIT - If you could see how driven some of the dogs are then you'd understand. Why do you think dog fighters use breaking sticks? Because nothing else works on the very highly driven dogs attacking a LIVE ANIMAL!

FFS DON'T PINCH HIS WINDPIPE! That's a sure way to do a dog some serious damage and I know many a dog that would rather pass out than let go of a rabbit. Press his lip against his teeth (firmly but not hard enough to do damage), it makes him think he's biting his lip and should make him let go. You can try a 'pet corrector' spray that makes a loud noise and should distract him enough to make him let go (maybe not ideal if you're trying to be quiet) or electric shock collar which has the same effect but a bit more extreme, it should be used in conjunction with the command to leave so that o

They dont have to be fighters, my mate took a pair of terrier pups to a vet to have them jabbed they were docked and he had no paperwork. The vet first off refused to jab the pups them threatened to report my mate. Dont forget people have had visits after taking marked up dogs to shows during the summer. If the lad knows a decent vet then by all means get the dog down in my experiance a lot of vets are robbing b*****ds. And the alternative is to potentially allow the dog to suffer and possible die. There is no good reason to deny a dog treatment. If he gets a visit then he can sho

GET HIM TO THE VET ASAFP. He's clearly not a fighting dog and his cuts obviously come from his (legal) work. I don't think any vet in their right mind would report you for anything. You could well get reported if you don't get your dog adeqaute medical attention though. Using the same failing anti-biotics again is not going to work and you could end up losing the dog and ending up in court for animal cruelty. Get it sorted properly and to hell with the (minimal) cost. Cracking dog by the way.

hogdog replied to katewoo's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Is RAY your on about ray jones? that races his whippets I can't remember his sirname off the top of my head. He's got a fantastic bitch called Tia that competes at Harlow. -
This is my brother's Bull Terrier bitch. Used on rats and rabbits she does a good job, she also does really well at lure coursing and on the A frame beating the vast majority of Staffords. From K.C show lines but she's turned out really nice, not too bulky, about 16" and 32lb.

Katewoo wasn't asking what people thought about Bull Terrier crosses, there are plenty of threads on here where that's been done to death. She also knows what an Ingles Bull Terrier is and understands its qualities. -

A common misconception, they're not thick, they're the exact opposite. People think they're thick because they won't do what they're told. They're stubborn and need motivating or persuading to do what you ask of them. People who fail to train a dog will always blame the dog when it's actually the trainer at fault. My Bull Terrier is far smarter than the Staffords I've owned. He's bloody hard work but he's well worth the extra effort. Just because a dog is easy to train doesn't mean they're smart. -

My brother uses his K.C bred BT on rabbits and rats. There are better dogs for the job but they will do it pretty well. A good, performance bred Bull Terrier is extremely versatile. In other countries boar hunters use them alot in their pure form and crossed. -

Hello Katewoo She's a good girl. I think Ray's whippet would go nicely over her. -
They are unpredictable I'll agree that dog agression comes with the breed but if your dogs have been bought up together, they've showed no signs of aggression and there is a clearly dominant one of the two then I don't think there's a big issue as long as you keep food and toys away from them while they're kenneled. I think there is risk with any breed, the most unpredictable dog I've seen was a Dalmation. Maybe I over stated the case saying "safe as houses" but I don't want people to think they're definately going to have problems as that's not always the case.
-
Thanks Robbie1, he's only eight months old in that picture, he's eleven months now and coming on nicely...22" and 55-60lbs. He's from Lyndon Ingles. I couldn't ask for a better dog...too young to breed from and not properly proven yet but I imagine he will be used for a cross at some point all being well.
-
I've kept bull breeds together and I know loads of other people that do without problems too. They're not unpredictable as people would have you believe. If you know your dogs and understand their behaviour then they're as safe as houses. I don't agree that a Staffy is the wrong cross, there are good and bad in all breeds...finding a good one is key. I know some very slight Staffies with huge prey drive that I'm sure would make an excellent first cross. My brother even runs his (very slight) pure bred English Bull Terrier on the rabbits and picks them up all the time...not as good as a lur

I'd just like to add that Ockendon is in South Essex (near the dartford tunnel) so it would be great if people could keep a look out around that area in particular, thanks.

Last night The Greyhound and Whippet Shop in Ockendon was broken into and everything...yes everything! was stolen. This includes dozens of bags of food, leads, collars, muzzles, supplements, medicines etc. This is obviously thousands of pounds worth of equipment and is a huge financial blow to the business. Please keep an eye out for this stuff and if anybody is offered any of it cheap or in suspicious circumstances please contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or your local police station. Thank you.

You can get something called 'TUF-FOOT', I got mine from a greyhound and whippet supplies shop but it's also used on horses so you might be able to get it from an equine shop. I used it on my Bull Terrier pup and it's very effective.
