  1. barraboy , as I've said before that lab is one of the best looking ones I've seen. The pic where he is "posing" is a cracker ..and inspired me to do this (which I think you've seen before.) Keep us up to date with his working progress - great pics by the way. YIS
  2. I would guess so................. The other funny thing about my dog is that she is the lasiest dog - of any breed - that I have ever come across. I don't think she'd bother if i never took her out ever again. She is a beauty to look at but never an out & out worker imo.
  3. It's always difficult trying to generalise on any cross, some good and some not so good I guess. I own a whippet/greyhound x saluki/greyhound, lovely dog, speed to burn but no brains. She only has one speed, flat out so has had plenty of injuries over the years. Her coat is also very poor and doesn't give her much protection from the weather. I'm sure other similar x's are ok dogs but as all my dogs stay with me until the end, regardless of their ability, I wouldn't have another of similar breeding - just in case. Oh and as whippet boy says, mine isn't the brightest of dogs either..........
  4. It's always been in the back of my mind Frank. i always said I'd breed from her if I thought she was good enough and possibly throw something better than run of the mill 1st crosses - if not whats the point........................ Still not convinced there are enough dogmen out there who have the patience & the ability to give such a cross the time & experiences it needs. Not everyones cup of teaa either. Still you never know in the future :thumbs-up:
  5. I've used a GSD x collie a few years back. Hard as Nails, coat like a grizzly bear and mustard on fox though she was very hard mouthed on rabbits. Type of dog you could take anywhere for a bit of sport without attracting attention. She lived to be 17 and was one of the best dogs I ever had, Got to agree about some of the current show strains of today too many faults to seriously consider as a breeding line imo. Katie aged about 14........
  6. I use my collie for general mooching about, a bit of ferreting and ratting. She also comes with me when I take the air rifle out too. She;s a good marker, mustard on rats but obviously can't compete with a lurcher for speed. She is still fast enough to have accounted for a fair few rabbits given the right conditions.
  7. For general air gunning I use accupels but I like the h points when I am rat shooting at close range, more stopping power in those connditions than the accu's. My advice is if they work for you & your gun then stick with it....if they don't, experiment.
  8. Cracking pics mate.... the dog looks in good nick, a credit to you
  9. In my opinion it's the breeders who should take some of the blame as some breed purely for profit and don't give a 4X who buys them.................
  10. This is an original watercolour that I have for sale if anyone's interested. Best offer from here or smoochers or TVC secures......pm me if interested cheers
  11. I'm a great believer in not only getting a dog that suits your intended prey and type of country but one that also suits your own character too. By that I mean for example if you are a loud outgoing character then avoid the shy timid type of pup and so on. Best of luck with whatever you get.
  12. In these parts..... Starlings - Shepsters or Sheppys Seagulls - sea ducks Eels - Snigs Horse sh*t - coddy muck (which is close to the Cuddie etc used by some scottish members) lapwings - peewits Hares - Hartleys
  13. BD I have to agree, proper working beardies are useful animals. I know a shepherd in the scottish borders who works and breeds them. He was a border collie man for years but was disillusioned by a lot of crap blood thats around now so moved on to the beardies. Me, I've had collies for nearly 30 years so can't give up on them now I've found that you are either a collie man or you're not as they are sometimes difficult to understand & appreciate. If you aren't on the same wavelength then it's a rocky road.
  14. You'd be surprised what i have at the bottom of my garden welshdragon :search: :11: :11: :friends:
  15. Being a collie cross fan myself I am a bit biased but what learner said is true. My opinion is you need the right collie blood, one that is not hyper and over exceitable and these are not that common these days believe me Also helps if BOTH the parents have both done a bit.... My advice would be if you want a ferreting, mooching and rabbit dog then go for the collie X...if other game is your choice then maybe think again IMO the "right sort"...
  16. Well it was a veterans class... I think it was the seductive hand on the hip by smally that swayed the result in his favour.............. Had a good day & met a few good sorts, oh an fellman too "40 yards....."
  17. Nice bunch of kits there 'owdbum......and the dog is the spit of mine too. by the way do you know when the Astley show is on this year & are you on ferret duty again????
  18. Just spotted a sparrow at the feeder with a white wing and white tail feathers! The rest of it is normal colouration. Is this partial albinoism or is there some other term for it? Here it is......
  19. She's looking a credit to you breeze And she looks quite racy for a 1st cross, roll on winter eh C'mon the collies....
  20. I know exactly that feeling Andy, best part of the day bar none. Great pictures too, well done the pair of you.
  21. Cracking set of pics breeze. Glad to see she's picking up the basics and getting used to the livestock. Now's the ideal time IMO for bringing on a youngster and getting the groundwork in before the real job begins. Please keep us posted of your progress. Up the collieX's
  22. Does anyone know where and when this years shows are to be held? They used to be held at Winnick hospital, Warrington but now I heard they've moved to Oldham but have no confirmation. If anyone knows more please let us know. YIS....
  23. Cheers for that smally, i'll try and get a look, sounds interesting . Has anyone seen the other episodes, is it worth watching generally?
  24. Doxhope's the man to tell you about the deerhound crosses...he has some fantastic pictures which I'm sure he'd share with you. Nice looking dogs mistwalker, good luck with the pup.
