Theres my single handed fox dog only way to run a dog single handed dont get me wrong you dont get as much single but you atleast you no what you have in your pen

exactly trunk, they have to prove theyre worthy of earning their keep on their own 1st, then if the fox gets away it was better on the night or day not because a dog rubber gobbed it, takes as much to feed a gooden as it does a baddun
out of curiosity how many foxes would you expect to see on a night out in ireland on average?

a fair few, amongst other things too, but i only heard about lamping only dogs or daytime only dogs, rabbit dogs, fox dogs on here. to us the dog had to do it all or it wasnt kept, all rounders so to speak, maybe it was just because of the way the troubles were, ment you could only really hunt certain areas so your dog had to be open to more than 1 trick

Your on the money alright a lurcher used to have to do it all now I more or less concentrate on fox day and night and for me the are as hard to catch day or night lol

  2. The silverline grafters to the job the very best we have used them for two seasons along with a couple of spade heads with heavy stainless bar welded onto them as the saying goes the tools don't dig the ground but good tools with a bit of weight make it a bit easier unless you have the job of carrying them from the vehicle as I often do lol

wy do people always run down men when a few dogs don't work out.I have seen Gud dogs mated from worker 2 worker with no fancy names and being pure shite

Undertaker not running anyone down because the dogs didn't make it as stud dogs....I'm saying they WOULD/WILL never produce a line, should never have even been attempted with their breeding either, they were not bred that way.......I'll use a phrase I see so often on here "You can't educate pork!" If you don't understand the simple statement originally made then that phrase applies to you!
The nan bitch has produced a good litter every pup made the grade and pups from those dogs are doing the stuff as well and they are tested week in week out
How many litters did nan have aaron01? Was she bred back to sons of tro or turbo? Or was she just out to random dogs for worker to worker? I've stated and will always state troy turbo and nan along with their other siblings cannot and will not produce "a line of dogs" I'm not on about one litter I'm talking a "line". So how many litters has she had to produce this " line" aaron01?
I never once said she produced a line I was just stating a fact to my knowledge nan only had one litter before she was killed the owner was to busy testing the bitch to worry about breeding

I remember mine like yesterday me an the mate were only 14 or so caught one on the lamp with two borrowed lurchers we carried it the whole way home to show the older lads we hunted with they weren't too amused having the doors banged at 2 in the morning with too young headers waving a dead fox about proclaiming to be the best hunters god ever put in a green field lol

Iv seen good marking packs take over 10 minutes to mark spots in the past, not a squeek, just active sterns, then like a flick of a switch they start to mark, so why folk seam to expect a terrier to mark every fox with a quick sniff of a hole is a bit beyond me..

At last a bit common sense that sounds like it comes from experience.

Of all the breeds of hunting type dogs hounds probably have the best nose.

So why then can a fox leave a covert 5 seconds in front of hounds and yet they sometimes can't pick up his line.

It's because of the science of scent.

And the scent around an earth is no difference. Especially if the fox has been to ground for some time.

Unless a good, reliable, honest terrier gets in there and checks it you CANNOT walk away saying an earth is empty.

Who ever said that a terrier that travels an empty earth is false marking hasn't a clue what he's talking about.

False marking is one of a terriers biggest faults and a terriermans biggest nightmare.

IMO when entering a youngster one of the biggest mistakes a terrier man can make is to ensure that every earth the terrier checks is occupied.

This teaches a young terrier that an earth is never empty and can result in a terrier that wont say NO and will false mark. It must be a combination of someone at home and no one at home.

With a good reliable search, find, stay type terrier you'll be surprised how many shitty, dead looking places you'd have walked by are actually holding.

A windy morning can fill entrances with leaves and on a sunny morning spiders will cover entrances with cobwebs in minutes. Combine this with bad scent and earths will appear empty.

Also the fact that a lot of lads wont let a terrier of a lead because they know it might f**k off, never to be seen again.

A terrier is a hunting dog and should be able to run from entrance to entrance of a lead and search an empty looking earth without the terrierman wondering will it pop out the other side and disappear.

Also this thread was obviously started by a novice (who got advice from novices) and some one should point out to him that it is illegal for any type of dog to kill a fox in a stopend.

Agree with you Neil it takes a dog to enter the earth for me In regards to a pup running an unoccupied earth is vital in there progress

  7. I seen hitler and gyp on many occasions over the years defiantly game enough I owned the fifty bitch for a while but she wasn't no where near half the dog of the other two I can't remember if she was a litter sister or a half sister there was a good number of pups produced by both my mate from downpatrick had a pure white pup that was starting to go well but unfortunately was stolen from his pen as backfill says Kb from downpatrick has a pup from hitler who is very like him in looks and he seems game enough from what I've seen I know the lad who took hitler to Dublin very well and I will guarantee this the dog would not have got to many days of work sore or not lol and of all the times the dogs changed hands over the years I never heard of and complaints about them only maybe hitler lacked a bit of pace
