A vet told me to never give pain killers to a dog with a working injury , as it masked the pain and made the dogs a lots less cautious, resulting in them banging  themselves or jumping about making injuries worst or making them heal slower

Is your vet talking about Morphine or something?

Rimadyl or Metacam aren't that powerful that a dog is going to be unaware. But they will be more comfortable and reduced swelling will increase blood flow and speed up wound healing.

I wouldn't use it to get a lurcher back galloping sooner, but for terriers there's big benefits.

Maybe I'm just complacent but at the age of 52 I aint needing to learn much more nor have I in the last 20 years .I was lucky in the the chap I first went out with was as laid back as I am about the whole deal .No need to run about with the box ,no need to listen at holes and no need for needless talk. Dig the hole to match the depth and try to break through just behind the dog .Backfill tube behind dog  if animal is to be despatched .This is where I've seen things go from bad to worse.

I know in the last 20 years I've starting using Avalache locators instead of the grey deben boxes, the sharptooth fork is a very handy tool. I'm also using anti inflammatories and pain killers like Rimadyl now, where as 20 years ago I didn't.

Reading your post you give the impression you haven't progressed in 20 years.

    I don't believe you

Sorry FD but haven't got anything in pedigrees that Rabbit Hunter hasn't given you from The Fell Hunter. I have 3 pedigrees here that go back as far as Black Davey but that's it.

Interestingly I looked at Plummers book a while back and seen that Cyril Breay confided in Wally Wyld that there was not one drop of bull blood in his terriers. Yet Rusty (a grandson of Black Davey's) was known to be aggressive with other dogs and would even attack a hound. When Breay offered him to Buck, Buck said no thanks. A smooth coated red or black terrier that went for other dogs would have lads saying it's a bull cross nowadays.

You better have another read of that book. Plummer said Wyld said Breay said. And all the Pedigrees go to Dave but no further.

In the book it says Breay only ever wrote down one pedigree . I'll quote the book here

"The only written pedigree Breay was ever known to send anyone-which stated that Davey was bred out of a black bull terrier type fell bitch"

its possible to get this type back wide spread again just line with hard jadgs and breed back again to the above type of terrier bitch or dog cull hard and go again in 15 to 20 yrs ur line of working type lakies would be strong again.dug too a black and tan dog for a fare few yrs very like the picture of the bitch above.he was good hard dog that very rarely took a backward step.i didnt own him but it was a joy to c him work.the dog was an alagator.one of the very best ive seen.

Then you'd be breeding just for colours?

The type will always exist but colours might change.

Better to breed for the type of worker you want rather than colours surely? I want find anywhere, do whatever needs doing to back up and stay till the end, don't mind what coat or colour they have. Breed from the best you can. B
