Use a floater instead of the magnet, if you don't have one find some hazel and make one.

Depends what the wind is doing but a good pattern to try is wind on your back walk out 25 yards put your magnet in walk ten yards left put half your decoys in a rough group at least a couple of yards apart, do the same thing on the right, sit back and as soon as you get the coffee or fags out the birds will turn up.
