 Woke very ill this morning. Cannot remember getting in even. I wanted a day off but the old feller had bullied me yesterday into going today. Just went in the old fellers motor this time, so no quad, on some of the easy ground. Took the runners, and I put 2 jills in the box on purpose. (I didn't feel like digging today.) We knew the pickings would be slim as we had covered most of the ground a while ago. Got a mark, put the jills in, within a few minutes they were into a rabbit. Boxed it up, and shook my head. Near 5ft for the first dig of the day with a hangover fro

Day 16, well what can I say? Finally a break in the weather, bright sunshine, no rain, no cloud, light wind. Life does not get better!!! UNTIL YOU STUMBLE UPON THE ABORTION OF A DIG AND BACKFILL THAT THE JUST FOR A WALK CREW LEFT A MONTH AGO! (I actually watched them on this warren.) Cannot wait to see them again. Its ok lads I'll fill the ickle hole back in, shame you didn't take all the three remaining rabbits out! Dicks Anyhow, good day really. Three albino amigo's doing around 50% of the graft, the rest by the dogs. Found a warren today that I thought w

Its taken me a while mate, but i've come to the conclusion that there is two types of ferreters.

Go on Andy, get one of these for your lass. Would love to see the reports featuring one of these! Looks like the nose helped out a bit mate, you know one day a dogs coming, you'll just make time somehow!

Plenty of room! Hope there's a roof on the enclosure!

I made a big mistake years ago, by mixing some dried food with milk, this was on top of the daily meat. As a result, it was not all eaten that day, and being in the warmer months must have gone off. Within 2 days, the ferrets looked a little weak one day, the following day they had passed away. I put it down to bacteria in the milk with it going off. Never let any of my ferrets near the stuff ever again.

Just thought, have you ever mixed milk in with their food?

I know its a bit of a common reply, but knowing quite a few have gone down, i'd be having a word with the vet. Sounds like they may have had some type of virus or illness. I'd probs spend a few quid and get the others checked out, and start a fresh with new cages and carry boxes, or some serious disinfecting. Sorry to hear about the jill.

Nice one FV. Those big warrens are tough going for the ferrets, the bunnys give them the run around with so many tunnels to get through. Bet the netting up took ages, nice read and photo's.

Cheers for the insight into how things are done in Oz. Do the rabbits breed all year round down there, or is there a time when there is no young? Also was going to ask about the heat taking its toll on the dogs, over here early in the season we had temps hitting 16 degrees, and this was way too hot for the dogs, only when the temp started getting below 10 degrees could the dogs handle it. (They seem better suited to 2 or 3 degrees to be honest.) Are most of the runners over there dogs with light smooth coats to help with heat probs? keep up the good work.

Not sure it makes any difference whether its wet, dry or the wind blowing from any direction. Not found a pattern yet. Only thing i've found is early in the season the young inexperienced rabbits will bolt easier, as the season draws on, they'll take there chances with the ferrets. Bieng quiet around the holes and keeping well back from sight does help a percentage to bolt, but not always, some just dont want to bolt and some do. Then there are those that the dogs run to ground, you would think they'ed never bolt after being hard pushed, but half the time they will bolt again. E

Dont forget to tell the guys to keep digging after the ferret has shown on a cross and has been put back in the box. A few more spoonfulls out of a dig when the ferret is boxed up can see another corpse on the string rather than being left to rot downstairs for nothing.

Keep the pics coming mate, in the frozen north, seeing piccies like that make me feel warm! Do the rabbits sit out much in seats in the cover much when you are out and about? And also does mixi ever show?

Easier job with a locater kid, but hats off for the trenching job. If you got the ferret back then it was the right thing to do. If you can get a few snaps of the day in future and we'll give you a guide! (My way is probs the wrong way though!)

Alreet chaps. How many of you let the weather forecast dictate whether you go out or stay at home? If I had gone with the forecast like today i'd have been out 3 times this year at best. I'm not saying it was dry and comfortable all the times i've been out, but when you are out, even getting a good morning out of it makes it worthwhile. Today was one of those days. Forecast rain all morning with showers in the afternoon. It pretty much upheld its end of the deal. It will take a bit more than a shower to stop the job. Same as yesterday, The three runners, the quad, the old chap and thr

BOOOOO! Was looking forward to a another read! Hope the back is better soon and the rabbits are shown hell!

The box is crammed to the rafters at 50 rabbits mate, spilling over with a few on a strap. Had a blackie rabbit on day 11 i think so not the first, they are multipling!
-
Nah not at all. Digging out ferrets and rabbits was happening long before locaters came out, using a liner hob and a probe. Somewhere along the line the 'cute folk' saw there was an easier way by doing half a job by never putting a spade to ground. Wish i could tell you more about the old ways with the liner hob, never used the method myself as it has been lost in the circles i work in, but maybee i'll have a try one day and see what i can work out myself.

Classy work again mate. must take a while to run the nets out, then the buggers decide they are not coming out. -
Quite a lot of digging. Hope your back gets better soon mate. Also how's Col getting on?
-
Bugger! That bleeding mixi! least you got out and got a few, and hopefully next year the mixi wont be about chaps!

Been out today with the old chap. He's far from being his usual self, but waiting around for the docs to check out his x-ray, is getting him down a bit. Only one thing to take his mind of it, get out and do a bit. Went mob handed again, the three runners, 5 ferrets and hondapants. All went to plan, even later in the day it dried up! Only downside was chasing two of the big poley hobs around. They are really swift, they do their job without fault under the ground, but as soon as the warren is empty, they think they should be running with the dogs and are a pain to catch up, chasin

The dogs at best would at this moment in time, be pushing 1 year old? Thanks Dogs-n-natives. Could that dodgy cross make something in the right hands? (not trying it by the way!)

Wish he was wee! Bleeding speedy lump! (sure you can tell which one he is!)

About a year ago, a lad of here under the post name crossed a JRTx Greyhound. A few off here took a couple of the pups from what i could gather. (Most thought it was a daft cross.) Has anybody any info on how the pups turned out, or any photo's of the dogs now? (Or was it all a wind up?) Either way just out of curiousity i'd like to see the results a year on if anybody can help, many thanks.
