I think you need to get the measure of the land really and any possible hazards...that's what separates the responsible from the irresponsible.... Years ago a bloke I dug with was attending a badger dig (when legal) and there was a team of 6 or so diggers and a rake of dogs with them...the guy in question - Goofy - always allowed his dogs off the lead, usually in the hope they'd be first down and taking the credit for the find. Anyway, all dogs except his were coupled (good practice prior to an organised dig) as they approached the sette. All the team were carrying digging implements and G

As long as it's collared up then I let mine...they've caught in cover before and two seasons ago we were walking out, my mate with his Lakeland and me with my Border, when he disappeared for 45 mins. After calling him I begun to think he'd wandered off and been hit or stolen. I walked back to where I last saw him and suddenly a fox flew out of an earth in front of me. I hollered to my mate which startled it and it ran straight across the dry ditch into a one holer. Ten seconds later my dog appeared, a bit bitten so we entered my mate's Lakey and dug about eighteen inches to it. The pic show
