  1. Hi, i would say there is no set age as every dog/bitch is different and depends a lot on how much work they have done. Your knowledge of your terrier will be the best indicator of when the time for less has arrived. That's what I was driving at..my friend still worked his dog at the age of 10...although I believe he (the dog, not the friend) was becoming senile which consequently led to aggression...but he still worked reasonably well; I think many will work until the day they cannot...but is that day assessed by us, or them? Ironically, given the amount of experts on 'working' terr
  2. Assuming that a terrier is still fit - mentally and physically - showing signs of age, when would you retire him/her? I know many veterans would work until the day they die, but do you go by age, health etc? I'm interested in criteria or just individual judgement. Thanks, Nuv
  3. Seems an unusual time of year to be stripping, heading into the new season and winter.
  4. I always use a Bulldog spade...various shapes for various tasks but I don't think you can buy better. And it's British.
  5. Dillon, Is the Dam the bitch you brought out with the minkhounds that day?
  6. Sorted...get a free pup from mterrierman.
  7. Never sold a terrier for more than £100 to a working home. How much to a 'non-working home'? More or less....? Well to be honest i haven,t breed any terriers for a long time now but i have sold russell,s for £150 You could have one of my Borders for that.... So, do you charge more to a non-working home...? A sort of 'non-working' supplement?

  9. The problem is many terrierfolk believe that Border breeders are in it purely for the money. Whilst that may be true in the vast number of cases, some of us will only let dogs go to working homes; try finding real terriermen who'd pay £3-400 for a pup: I wouldn't - nor would I sell for that kind of money. And that's not because the punters aint out there. The last litter I bred, went free to working homes - Tuffty has a bitch pup and - I understand - she's comimg on well, although this coming season will be her first test. If she's anything like the previous progeny, she won't. As for
  10. A few pics of mine, pre-ban.
  11. Good post Taffy...a mate of mine got into digging when his whippet dog went (semi-successfully) to earth in a peat bank and got stuck... Longears, I'd like to know what you mean by 'GENRAL EARTHWORK': In my opinion, you cannot work fox and rabbit ad hoc. A terrier cannot discerne when it is meant to be hunting one quarry and not another. That said, I have had Borders for may years and found them - in general - to be harder than Russells, but more discreet than the black dogs.
  12. Have you ever owned one?
  13. and why wouldnt you reommend a border? My own experience is - and this is not paraphrasing Plummer's 'notoriously slow to enter' comment - they can take more time and effort to become a useful working terrier. Does that clarify things?
  14. I wouldn't recommend a Border for a beginner.
  15. Well said Molly.Unless you know what you are doing then leave it to a vet.Marrajack-pm me if its a bite wound .I can recommend just the stuff . Nice sentiment...but around here, taking a badly lacerated terrier to a Vet is asking for trouble...
  16. I have a working Border dog, proven. I'm South East if interested.
  17. 100% When spanning a dog its a measure of the forequarters not its chest. Unless the dog is barrel chested then the shoulders are the widest part.
  18. Plummer said Borders are late starters. He also bred the Plummer terrier.
  19. I live near his constituency...the man was a total left-wing tosser; hope his sister goes next - she's a big name in PETA.
  20. Dillon...I hope that wasn't on 'our' permission. Good to see Molly coming on well...last time I saw her she was but a pup. Don't forget our New Year's Resolution....
  21. I tell no lies...he didn't say I couldn't join but had no interest at all...very unhelpful. Apparently there was a vacancy at the time...eight years or so ago...I spoke to Cheeseman and he told me he had left or retired or wasn't the rep or something. I did join but Ray Cutler sorted it for me...he's in your neck of the woods I think. They did a big rescue of my mate's dog years ago at Ugley...a different region though...Chicken Paul's mob I believe.
