  1. If you have a woman leading your efforts, your doomed. Women are not to rule or judge. Vote with your feet and leave the land that does not agree with your lifestyle. Your welcome to camp out here until you've got your feet under you. This goes out to all honest men in the UK. I'm not some rich dude making these offers, I'm just an educated hillbilly yank that's looking out for other honest dog men from across the pond. It blows my mind in much the same way the state of things shocks the senses of Desertbred when he looks back on the past and contrasts it with the present. The differenc
  2. That doesn't mean they would run that way single handed.Do you think those dogs were working as a pack ??? ..... I know dogs don't always run to the best of their ability when doubled up or ran with more dogs. If my dogs didn't run to their best of their ability because there was competition then they wouldn't be in my yard long ... I would expect my dogs to be working twice as hard if there was another dog competing for game ....... It pains me to say it but I agree with Socks here! Three dogs on one hare in that amount of space should've been over with quickly - and yeah, for me if 2
  3. In the area the video takes place it's either a ranch that is many thousands of acres large or govt. land. Govt. land in that region of the country can be millions of acres large. If you don't mind having to constantly think about where you'll get your next tank of water, you can roam around out there for ages and not run into another soul. It's pretty dry country. If I was a rich man I would give every deserving dog man a camp and one hell of a vacation package in that part of the country. You want to see critters! South Texas is filled to the brim. The edge of the irrigated farm
  4. Buddy, I wish you could see a North Dakota fox cruise across the plains. The speed doesn't even look real. I never have run a fox in the Southwest but will someday. My in-laws live outside Reno, Nevada. It's only a matter of time.
  5. Not sure. I haven't hunted where they are running. I've ran in Arizona and done some hiking in Nevada. There are areas that are loaded pretty heavy with hares and some that are not. Others have bunnys and all of them have coyotes, grey fox and bobcats except the really dry areas have no grey fox. Mtn. lions are around but they don't hang out in the flats. I would say there are more hares than any other runnable game.
  6. It would be interesting to put a GPS on the dogs and get the average speed. I run Garmin collars on all my dogs when they are out because I live in timber country but I don't think you could loose a dog out there, ought to be able to see them for miles.
  7. This one is for all of the folks in the UK that have seen a fair amount of hare coursing and were wondering how some of the dogs here in the USA compare with the UK stock. I don't know enough to make a fair comparison myself as I run mostly predetors but I'm very interested to hear honest assessments of what you all think. "End of season hunt with Ricky Hickey, Milt Garrett and Melanie Keithley. Ran 3 sets of dogs today. Rabbits 6 dogs 0! We all got out run on these wicked hard running Desert black-tailed jackrabbits today south of Hagerman, New Mexico. The following video features the Qu
  8. I'll put them on whatever they like and are the best at. Coyotes, fox, hare, etc... I'll raise them in the open, in the woods, in the swamp, around farm equipment, fences, ditches... I'll put them through the paces and see where they fit. I have a lot of friends that can help with that also. They'll get to run at waterfaowl in the fields, catch chipmunks and squirrels and feral cats and whatever. The dogs will tell you what they like best if you give them the chance. If it's not my game a young dog will be off to someone that wants that dog for what it's good at. You can raise a lit
  9. If you have personally hunted with or watched the top 3 coursing dogs in the UK please post a review of all three like so: Dog #1 (Name): Dog is great and has these exceptional qualities which is why it does so well and is better than most... Dog #2 (Name): Same as above... Dog #3 (Name): Same as above... Also, will you include (if possible) which of the three dogs has more jumping power. I'm going to pull some of that blood over to the US if possible. I'd like to stop wondering how it compares to the big country staghound blood here. Please include or forward any co
  10. how many salukis will track-guy i worked for sent out a bitch(greyhound/stayer/drominboy diva)-beat any sals she raced-desertbred tells me there are better in his country though.(she went dubai)-shed have been lucky to ever win a race in ireland or england Saluki were not bred for the track put a grey out on any other terrain over 1000 yds and see if it beats a fast saluki/ Most of the Salukis the Arabs run a good lurcher would beat them anyway thats why they come here buying secondhand dogs . Interesting point. I'm not likely to find something like that out from all of the way over h
  11. Won everything in the USA 2016 Trane:
  12. Here's Trane, the whippet that won everywhere in the USA this year. https://www.(!64.56:886/photo.php?fbid=10209177293883792&set=a.1127602504611.2020125.1063642270&type=3
  13. The merle is from the leopard hound. It's the American Leoaprd Hound and not the Catahoula though. The difference between the two is like the difference between the Blue Tick Hound and a Blue Heeler with the Leopard being a tree dog like the Bluetick. She has a thicker undercoat from the Border Collie and the brains came through in spades. It was wild hunting with her. Her best talent was locating and catching. If another dog got the cat started and was running it you could just walk her into the area and she would stand there for a minute just listening and then she would take off like
  14. I haven't made the cross myself but I have hunted quite a bit with one that is nearly the same and this dog could catch bobcats at will that would keep other dogs chasing for hours. The dogs name was Camo and she was 1/2 leopard, 1/4 plott and 1/4 border collie.
  15. The bottom of the two is the better dog at this point, though the top one is better looking in the picture. I'm still looking around for a top stud. There are some nice dogs around but I hate taking seconds so it will take me a little while to find a real genius. I have some time to go looking this summer and that's just what I'm going to do. In the mean time, if they both came into heat today I would go with Polly, the tri colored female. Maggie is great but needs to get some age on her she's only 20 months old. It's lucky that not everyone is a good judge of dog flesh or I wouldn't hav
  16. These are two of the three. I traded the third to a very good border collie man from Wisconsin for 2nd pick of her litter. I don't have a picture of her on my phone. The two pictures above are from right at the time I got them. They are in much better shape now. Both bite both ends and both are hard biting dogs. Both know their job well but the younger of the two (split faced female) doesn't know all of the whistle commands yet. That doesn't matter a whole lot because I will teach them my own set of whistles as they learn to hunt here. By the end of summer I should have made my choice
  17. I couldn't be happier with the opinions here so far. That's just where I'm heading. I picked up three cattle bred border collies out of Kansas last month. They are hard biting and tough and nails but both seem to have a pile of common sense without the nerviness.
  18. I would like to know what your favored blood line of Border Collie is and what separates it from others. Please be a specific as you can.
  19. Great stuff, these stories are getting pretty funny. I'm reading them out loud to my 12 year old boy and he's rolling.
  20. I'm surprised that no one (that I know of) has come to the USA and bought up a few really good stags and brought them back over there.
  21. Down to one female and two males. I'll be watching these two males and picking between them when they're older. They're starting to get knobby kneed and giving clues as to how big they'll be. Fun times to watch but I can't wait for the wet work to begin.
  22. It would be surprising to hear all of these stories if I didn't remind myself that we're all dog men here. There seems to be quite a few of this type around.
