  1. most duck calls are designed on various pitches of a hen mallard, some for open ground (loud) and some for more subtle close quarters calling (raspy and tonal). You can imitate teh hens of other species with them as well, wigeon is quite straightforward. But in short, all are based on Hen mallards unless otherwise stated (i.e. teal/wigeon/pintail whistles, drake mallards rasp etc etc) T
  2. ebay, thats where I got mine
  3. 6 years since I took that journey regularly but it was definately after Lenzie and before Stirling! I believe it was before the train met the ridge of the grasslands adjoining the canal, small sloped fields, often barley stubble in winter that held floods next to the trainline. These small floods were teeming with ducks and were permanent enough to have moorhen and coots using them T
  4. on the train from GQS to Stirling, as you pass by the F&C canal near Kilsyth/Denny area there are lots of floods both right next to the canal also on the upper flood tier at the edge of fields adjoining the railway. I must have seen about half a dozen natural floods which were always full of mallard and teal when I took the early train. Its a long shot but it always seemed like somewhere I would scout out if I was in the area T
  5. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/south_...and/7938222.stm Nightmare. This is rediculous, I wish teh auction had not been made public, but it has, and this is what it has done. Why dont the TSLP or the Scot Exec agree to equal the maximum price and buy it for a Zoo!
  6. needs to be her constituency in D&G for her to obligated to make a reply, and it may have more impact if local. All that said I feel a bit bad now as I have been told she has been very supportive for "us" in other areas and that she had no choice but to speak out against this type of auction
  7. Well thats is what I was thinking, but I have been led to beleive that ultimately she is a good egg for the countryside views but that her hand was forced by the rather untactful publication of the auction of the opportunity to kill what is a "rare" phenotype of roe deer. So...I have made my piece to her and I am backing off a bitty. I think it would still be useful to have one of her constituents ask her to clarify her position on stalking and the selling/sub letting of stalking rights in Scotland as a valuable asset and make sure she is only concerned about this type of auction? Any
  8. I have received some communication suggesting that the problem here is that any MSP would have said the same thing given the lack of tact about going public about the auction of stalking right for such an iconic animal. The auction itself is bad PR for stalking perhaps, but that does not make the bias in the press any less incorrect. I am still annoyed that this MSP left the impression, whether she meant to or not, that stalking in general is butchery and that the stalking rights owner has no right to sub-let the kill (which he does) and that others have a right for it not to be killed
  9. Hi Everyone So there is this white roe buck in D&G and the rights to stalk it is being auctioned to raise cash. Whatever our thoughts on this it is how the rural economy works...end of The local MSP Elaine Murray described the hunting of this "dysfunctional" (my quotes) roe buck as "disgusting" (her quotes) in the Sunday Times yesterday. I wrote to her this morning........ Dr Murray MSP I saw your very narrow minded comment in the Sunday Times (8th March) about the role of a small rural business in auctioning the right to stalk and potentially kill a dysfunctional wil
  10. flattery will get you everywhere That said, the thread of the story was all wrong due to the editing! It conveys that the supermagnums were not "available" before the new CIP ruling, which was not the case, it is just that now we have the "Health & Safety" regulations for these faster/larger steel shells that means they can become CIP accredited loads. Before they were limited by the same regs as the 76mm/3" momentum limits
  11. Edenman and I talked about this before and I used to be convinced about the benefits of fast steel. I think there is tradeoff and that lighter fast loads can be great, but just like with lead, faster steel loads pattern less well. And then there is the question of muzzle jump and inter-shot time (time for the shooter to gain composure following firing a super duper fast shell). There must be a minimum speed that below which steel just is not that effective (as with lead), and I reckon thats about 1250/1300fps (muzzle velocity). Most factory loads start at 1300fps so they "should" not
  12. I'm a God fearing man and too used to my scottish rules so I dont shoot sundays, but that sure is a worship to the creation if you can add 100 duck to the table! Well done
  13. STEJ This was a fowling post? But thanks all the same Spike, no offence taken, I suspect that you are using the wrong load or pellet size with steel. I have the CONSEP steel shot lethality table which you can buy from Tom Roster. I cannot post it as it is copyrighted and Tom is a friend! It is based on 22,000 shots on live ducks and geese in a hunt situation, the outcome of those shots and dissection of the carcases to see what happened. Not everyone is a follower but for medium to large ducks the most successful shot size was a US 3, that is a UK 2. The load and shot size are more important
  14. I never said I saw people take ducks over 50 yards with Steel! What I said was the Remington HD is sold as being able to kill at greater range than lead or steel and that I cant afford it. http://www.remington.com/products/ammuniti...ngmaster_HD.asp Additionally I said that I have had no problem with steel as with the right product it is a lead equivilent. I have had several 30+yard clean kills on duck this season with 38gram loads of 1's (My favourite steel loads are 36grm+ loads of UK 2's but getting 2's is a nightmare so I use 36grm 3's or 38gram 1's). This includes a 40yard
  15. bjlfishing, that is a cracking return for anywhere/location! Well done that man
  16. Wow! All you lucky southerners with yoru gadwall and pintails. I never see them. So you are talking about Wingmaster HD from Remington at £5 a cartridge? I can see why, it is a great long range cartridge, better than lead. But so is Heavyshot which is cheaper, and then in my book with the right load Steel can be a lead equivelent? HD surely is the canines jewels but its is just too pricey for me!
  17. That is a good return, so was that over numerous places or just the Dee or what? T
  18. I've been thinking for a while about the potential merits of deliberately bleeding shot waterfowl and game. I keep forgetting to try it and yet I think I can tell the difference at the table when a duck has had teh chance to bleed versus not being bled. I shoot and eat a lot of woodpigeon, love it! Yesterday I used my recently serviced air rifle to bag my first AR quarry in several years. It was a woodie. I aimed for the neck/lower head area and I hit the neck. The bird flapped once and died. On inspection I hit the jugular, not sure if I actually hit the neck. Anyway I hung the bir
  19. I dont think he is referring to you Danebrewer10, I think he meant generally not bowing to anti- criticism. That said, I don't see any problem with you asking everyone to take more care about the photos we show online. This is an open forum so it can be seen by everyone, even younger kids who could be put off shooting by very gruesome shots? But it is hard to remember these things when you have just shot your first fox and are very proud if it! Well done on the first .243 kill, looking forward to it myself! T
  20. Montrose Basin Wigeon counts higer than 2007. Mallard, Pintail and Teal not changed much. But these are counts not what fowlers see. Numbers of wigeon seemed to be high on Ythan and flightponds in that area
  21. Try manufacturers or something like bass pro I mad mine from plastic bought in a craft shop, some glue and brass rods!
  22. Of course it is my opinons, don't know what SS means about the Beretta's, "they do not bode well"?? What I mean about cleaning is that apart from the barrell and a general wipe down I dont need to strip the gun that often, once a year usually when the action starts to get a bit sticky with dirty oil. The Benelli guns have no recoil reduction, only the structure of the synthetic plastic they use. But as you say that might not be important. Also, what about the remingtons, the 11-87 and the wingshooter series, they look nice and are one of the most popular guns stateside. I have the
  23. Beretta every day, cleaning is easy and rarely necessary, allows cycling of a greater variety of shells with ease, when you want a gun that can fire clays and then fire super steel loads at a goose while minimising recoil and muzzle jump (important on the big loads) then the A391 system wins every time. And looks, the A391's all have a much better profile than any of the Bennelli guns, granted the Bennelli's can cost less, and the plastic used on the synthetic guns might take a bigger bash, as it is harder, but you cannot beat an A391 for design, innovation, looks etc etc. To me it comes d
  24. Just pondering on how everyone got on in the last week of the season, there have been a few posts but not by everyone. And how was the season in general. You know about my last outing, it was bright and enjoyable, some cracking photos. I have had a good season, no blanks, but only just. I again found no shortage of duck, just not always the right conditions to get a bigger bag. And the geese seemed to be in good numbers and spread well across the country. All we have heard about is the usuals, but what about other areas and species. The diver numbers, i.e. goldeneyes, have been up on t
  25. SundayBain, sometimes I feel like that about Brown hares, I limit myself to one per season and only when I get the chance, I dont seek them. Remember again that there are two species of hare and each has strongholds in the UK where harvesting is feasable but yes there are other areas where shooting them risks local extinction. I guess that is why we should never pull the trigger without thinking about these kinds of questions T
