  1. Well I'm on the isle of lewis, I cant imagine life on the mainland, I have been, I have seen, I still live here in my tiny village. There are no worries here, we dont have a letter box, the post man lets himself in and leaves the post on the kitchen table and takes our post away, I don't even know where the key is for the front door!! I asked to borrow a neighbours 4x4 to go pick a trailer up on the other side of the island, yeah no worries he says, what about the keys I says ?? Oh I leave em in it .. haha great. We dont lock our car or take the face off the radio, the insurance is dirt cheap as ya cant get a car off the island without a ferry! The winter is hard but the fuel for heating is free (peat), but ya have to cut it. It dont get dark this time of year, but in winter it hardly gets light. I wouldn't swap it for the world.

And NO ya cant come live here but ya can come visit :D

  2. Would be better if the top one "What Is Your Interest In Shooting (Tick All That Apply)" included "hunt for food for the pot" I could fill it in then. I really dont class Hunt for sport as the same as for food. Jeez I'm in a funny picky mood today SORRY, I got my head up my arse.

  3. So far so good, the way you are going I think you will be able to finish it on your own and look forward to seeing the completed post. Well done :toast:

Maybe a little about safe shooting and distance for quarry should be included. Safety being a critical one high on the list.

It certainly answers many a question that has been posted over and over again.

  4. I was done by them a few years ago. Got a bill for £700+ rang them and they said was a mistake, should be £70 but I had to pay the £700+ as I had been billed it, I would then remain in credit for ever!! I refused to pay the £700+ and said I would pay my £70 actual bill, they said I couldn't and as I refused to pay the amount in full they cut me off there and then incoming and outgoing calls. Needless to say I never paid em a penny and they stopped hunting me for it when I issued a county court summons, I never won but I never had to pay them a penny too.

  5. at what age do you cull them for the table then ? im considering getting an incubator but thought they were quite pricy any advice on where to get one at a decent price would be good. do you keep hens separate for the eating eggs so they are unfertile or do you keep them with a cock so as they are fertile ? im not too clued up on this sort of thing but im starting to get very intarested in self suficiancy and id like to have a go at this i used to have quail in the aviary floor but they would lay and the eggs would just be binned as the hens wouldnt sit on them .

The birds have reached full size and are mature at six weeks, this is when i cull the table birds.

My incubator is one of the cheapest ones i think, its a Corti 25. The basic incubator was around £80 and the auto turner, wich i wouldnt be without, was around £20.

I run the cocks with the hens all the while. Though its not unheard of, its rare that these type of quail will sit their eggs im told.

All the time I had quail I never saw any sit on their eggs, we all ways had to incubate them, I dont know what breed they were (over ten years ago) I used to get them incubated at a hatch rate at 50+. All though my birds had a vast amount of open space they never hatched their own and I have never heard of quails getting broody? Maybe its me :icon_eek:

  6. But it'll be like yellow marbles which'll turn white in the sun and crumble to powder, if ye a dirty f*cker and don't pick up behind ye Dogs, thus treading in it.

Jeez I aint seen white dog sh*te for years, I all ways wondered where it came from...

Sorry for going off topic there :drink:

  7. when you phone plod, have everything written in front of you, so as not to sound un proffessional

start with who you are, name address, mobile contact number,

state your doing rabbit culling on mr so and so's land, plus his address and contact number,

a time that your be shooting from untill too, tell them your ring back at given time to inform them that cull is finished,

if you have transport, then also reg number of car (if its parked nearby/on land)

dont start taking every tom, dick and harry with you, at the end of the day, its your name on the permission, taking others that just want to shoot anything that moves, puts you in a bad light, and anything bad happens, it will come back on you

Best advice yet, simple and straight, common sense should see you not getting into trouble, screw the busy bodies if your doing it right and got permission in writing :wallbash:

  8. The wife calls em love puffs, except when its me doing em, then I get an elbow in the ribs .... she says I snore too ... silly woman .. they are my grunts of dreaming passion of her ... that didn't wash with her too ... ahhh the joys

  9. Super glue is good but if your going to the vet let him take a look first, super glue it first and he will probably charge you extra, like Clancy says "if all else fails"!! Good thing super glue, have used it on myself a few times, if its ok for me, ok for my live stock.

Am sure all will be OK.

Let us know the out come.

  10. I was planning on taking my girlfriend & kids, they love it there. So i wasnt really after a night out :D

Just wondering if there would be much open on the front for them to do :D

Its allways fun counting turds and other effluent matter floating about on the sea front there or have they cleaned it up since I was last there

  11. UPDATE.

The power cuts have stopped, it was in the local paper too that it was just one crow, it had been building its nest from bits of barbed wire which is why they had to shut the power off to remove it.

Now if I had had a say in the matter, I would have let it carry on until it had blown its self up, hey presto intant BBQ crow. Would have been a right laugh to see it go bang, but alas I wont get the chance now.

I guess this topic is closed now then!
