  1. If you're talking rimfire calibres, then for both on a regular basis I'd get 22 Magnum. Hits harder than the HMR and is flat to 100 yards. 17HMR if it's mainly bunnies with the odd fox. 22 Hornet is brilliant if you can get the ammo or you reload, since trajectory is similar to HMR (smidge flatter) but it hits with 3 times the power. 223 is also very good, but you need to feed the rifle cheap ammo to be worthwhile. SP or some HP ammo will be OK on body shots too, or you could try FMJ. personally I don't find FMJ does enough damage to be humane. I regularly shoot rabbits with qu
  2. John, same boat as you. Even the SPS tactical is too heavy for prolonged field use. Out all weekend and I know I've been carrying it! Also it doesn't shoot the Wolf ammo so I shall be keeping the Remington for targets and selling the Howa (at least that's my plan, it may well change!). Write-up of the weekend to follow from Deker I'm sure, but Outshooting - thanks VV VV VV much Accuracy from a light barrel should be the same but it heats up and goes off quicker. Tikka T3 shoots pretty accurately, Deker's does anyway and that's with el-crappo ammo. I am likely to get a CZ, since they'
  3. Mine is the wood stock, although I held a heavy-barrel plastic stocked one and was very impressed with it.
  4. But, bear in mind the word of warning regarding Human Rights legislation - a decent lawyer could easily use that to settle matters in court. Would be quite a good case tbh!
  5. I'd be hopping mad about that one, and I suspect that legally they'd be on thin ice because the whole household is not applying for firearms AND you have to do your utmost to ensure that nobody besides the license holder has access to the cabinet ANYWAY. So methinks they might lose a legal challenge there. Glad you got it sorted anyway though.
  6. I find it odd that you had complications because of a family member's record - surely you must be considered as your own person? If not, I don't think that's very fair!
  7. Leupold do QRW rings for weaver bases - they should do the trick nicely. Not sure on the bases, but IMHO leaving the Weaver bases isn't a problem. The info is on their site, www.leupold.com.
  8. Hi folks, I know there have been some changes with regard to scope export from the USA as it's rare now. Question is, if I buy a scope while on holiday there, can I actually bring it home or will they get grumpy at the airport? If it's a problem, how about if I buy it in Canada (am doing both on the same trip) and declare it when I bring it into the USA - that way surely it's not an export because I had it when I came in, so it's passing through
  9. Which Hawke scopes are you talking about? Let's be clear please because Hawke have many different options, made to different levels of quality in different places.
  10. I have a Tracer Max which I used before the Lightforce (one word of caution, I am on my second Lightforce, the other was a 140 and it's off to be fixed.). Compared with the Lightforce, it's crap. However, it does the job and is comparatively cheap. But, for a centrefire, I'd much prefer the Lightforce and would pay the extra every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
  11. Lightforce 170. Lovely bit of kit. 400m beam easy, but not for actually shooting something. tbh, AFAIK you'd be pushed to get a lamp bright enough to reliably see stuff that far out. More of a case with the LIghtforce that if the background is the right colour and permits enough contrast to see your target, you could shoot that far out.
  12. The RWS is factory cut, at least mine was! With a T8, your balance will be screwy with a T3, certainly is with an S5. RWS have been around for a long while but they're Austrian and the importer is Ruag, who are small and don't push the brand. I'm in Reading, so depending on which bit of Wiltshire you're in I can bring my RWS down for you to have a look at if you like? Wrong calibre and right handed, but see it, shoot it. If you don't immediately track one down and buy it, then get the Tikka! As for scopes, 8x56 Schmidt (but I've just been out with my much-maligned (:-P) Hawke
  13. Snap, you and Jamie both said basically 'don't get a Hawke as they tend to lose zero / are rubbish / etc.' - they're anti-Hawke comments. Made with good reason and experience I'm sure, you're not just slagging them off, but you are against them...
  14. I mulled it over when i got my SPS Tactical, went for the tactical because of the short barrel. But, I did like the SPS and tbh whichever gun would have done me nicely (223 BTW). Good rifle, reliable, reasonably accurate. Tbh, unless you like guns as art, to kill deer (presumably, with it being 308?) why pay more?
  15. Well, I have a 4-12x50 reflex which backs up the anti-Hawke comments as it did lose zero on my 243. However, clear enough glass and certainly OK on the 22. With regard to the Endurance 30, they're pretty good scopes really, retailing for £300+ sometimes. I can't see how they will all lose zero on a centrefire when their target market is the stalking rifle, which are 243 upwards. I will wait and see, but the impression I get is of a well made scope, and the optics are pretty clear. Don't get me wrong, they're not Zeiss or anything, but they certainly are a step up from £150-odd scopes
  16. snap, time will tell on the zero side as I only got it yesterday. All the Hawke ranges are different though, made in different places so time will tell. It was a lot cheaper than S & B or Zeiss though!
  17. Eeek! Not the one they undoubtedly sacked for shooting that guy the other month?!
  18. An interesting question that! Hmmm... Well, my RWS is wonderful, but I wouldn't have any issues buying a Tikka T3 either. They are both made down to a price, with plastic where I'd like to see metal. Both have detachable magazines, and are pretty reliable. I've been impressed with the accuracy I've seen from my RWS, but Deker's T3 shoots damn straight too. I would probably go for the RWS, as it's cheaper (slightly), and has a switch-barrel system should you need to go bigger. Also, it comes with weaver bases where the Tikka has to either use Optilocks or a third-party adapter. And,
  19. Right I'm having my 2 pence worth here! Long thread from 1 day! I own both rifles so I know a thing or two about them. My Ruger 10/22 (10/22 T Stainless) is reliable and accurate. It has the 'target' trigger which is rubbish, but bearable - certainly it doesn't stop good shooting like the base trigger does. As for ' you need to clean it after 300 rounds' - so what?! 300 rounds is bloody loads for a bunny buster. I clean mine after 50 and you know what, I can strip and clean that rifle in less time than it takes me to do a centrefire. As for 'the trigger will never beat a Sako Quad'
  20. tbh I think it's mainly the odd one, I was at Bisley this afternoon and it behaved itself well, no jams at all. Still love that trigger, too
  21. Yes mate, very happy indeed. Should have PMed you, thanks for the good advice there. Have found that it occasionally doesn't extract, that's the only real niggle. And it doesn't shoot Wolf at all which is a shame, but it loves Prvi 55gr FMJ, hopefully it will love the softpoint too but I haven't got any yet. Also likes the 40gr Federal, sub 1/2" at 100 yards so can't argue at all. Trigger is excellent too.
  22. I was also very impressed with the A-bolt, had the cut been 1/2" UNF I'd have bought one. They are a Value rifle - relatively inexpensive but well made. If you find one buy one! Synthetic stuff often has the seam marks - Tikkas & Remingtons do. As do Howas as the Hogue stock is the same as my Remington. They're rubberised though so it's not too bad. I agree it's somewhat annoying though.
