  1. Thanks both, I did take him back to the vets he was at it again last night and made it worse again. My vet supports coutry sports and is very common sensical with the dogs. He took the rest of the stitches out and said to leave him to it spraying with saly water every day. Such a shame though for 5/6 days he left it alone and it was looking great, then the itching of it healing set him at it! Penny, your book mentions Honey which is something ive used on ferrets abd chickens but I was worried it may encourage him to lick it due to the taste, he can get a bit obsesive over licking anyway. her
  2. Ey up folks, the lurcher cut the inside of his back leg on wire last week. It was stitched and was looking great until Thurs morning when he'd been at it over night. Its left a hole in the middle of the cut about the size of 2p with the stitches intact either side. He's got a collar on but has figured out how to hook it inside his stifle to let him at the wound. I will be going back to the vets again tomorrow but any one got any ways to put them off? I'm considering bandages as a bigger collar wouldn't let him walk through a door. Typical just before the season kicks in as well!
  3. Had my dogs inside back leg stitched yesterday morning following a leap beneath the middle and bottom strands on a rabbit. Cost me £180, how much you lads get stung for.
  4. 3/4 grey 1/4 border collie Jeff at about 12 months, now 18 months. Needs next season to really tell if he's up to much but certainly very keen. 25" tts, easy to train with such as stock breaking, sit, stay, jump and retrieve but comes with some bad traits like not liking being on his own. Out of Kubla.
  5. I've got a Whippet that did much the same until he was nearly two (I'm sure he was racing them), then it all clicked when out fereting one day. A runner tried to make it across a stubble field, he saw it when it was about 50yds away, caught up with it by the time it was 100yds away and returned it live to hand with out a mark on it as if he had been doing it for years! I'd just keep on training and keep on giving it the opportunity. atb
  6. I've got a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie that whines. He's nearly 5 month now and although better is still annoying. I hate whinning dogs its like nails on a black board to me. He used to bark in his kennel at night as well but an anti bark collar stopped that. The whinning though continues. I can't ignore it and if he is in the house he is told "quiet" every time he starts, it ususaly makes him stop for a few hours. At night he whines when he goes in his kennel for a few minutes and then stops until 7am when he starts again. If he is in his kennel I try to suprise him with either a shouting at or a
  7. I've had loads of trouble with a lurcher pup barking at night in its kennel. Innotek citronella anti bark collar has been the most effective and not to much to buy. You have to give it a good go and they do try to overbark it after a week or so. When it did try to overbark I brought an elctric shock collar, one remote function and another automatic anti bark, the remote one had an anti bark function that didn't work which led to me buying the other. The automatic anti bark collar was a nightmare, the first night I put it on it didn't work and he barked most of the night, the next day I tried
  8. Some dogs just do it, one of my three looks for it everytime and even remembers where it has been the last time! Use tomato sauce, the vinegar gets rid of the smell.
  9. Breast of lamb bones are really soft and my latest pup has had them (and eaten them) since he was 8 weeks.
  10. The same reason I ended my subscription, I like to choose when to talk politics and when to read about dogs.
  11. Barbed wire will keep you busy with a whippet. I have a two year old, whilst he does not clatter into it he catches him self on it regular. Head and back are the most common places to catch it. His first was the length of his chest and stomache on boxing day when he was just under a year old and got panicked by another dog. He pays it little attention and slows only slightly when he is chasing a rabbit in the day or at night. The skin on a whippet is like tissue paper. Salt water bath and tea tree oil rubbed in a for a couple of days sorts out the nastiest of looking cuts and he heals really w
  12. Use a cold tea bag, my terrier gets sore eyes from brambles. A couple of days with a tea bag soothes them.
  13. I've used tea tree oil on all my dogs for years with no problems, speeds up healing really well. I've never used it on bald patches though.Used to use tea tree shampoo on a bull terrier I had that suffered from numerous alergies as it is very good for soothing the skin. Used Benzyl on a whippet that had similar as a 12mth old pup and it cleared it up save one patch on his tail.
  14. My whippet is doing it all the time, like said above clean out with salt water (give it a good rubbing to get any muck out). I use tea tree cream on the wound for a few days and it heals up quicker than not using it.
  15. I had a new grey x collie pup three weeks ago, up until last night it barked when in its kennel at night, all night for the first week and then every few hours after. None of my neighbours complained and fair play because I think I may have if the shoe was on the other foot. It got to the point where it was driving me mad as well so I splashed out on an anti bark collar. Never needed one before and always laughed at the thought of them. Innotek anti bark citronela spray £40 argos(couldn't electrocute an 11 week old pup!) Best £40 I've spent, put it on him last night for the first time for t
  16. Local slaughter house will be cheapest, but you may need to clean it out.
  17. Many thanks for your reply. I have bathed his eyes tonight and it seems to be helping, i am hoping it is something that will improve as he grows . How old is your Border? Our Ted is on the look out for a hard working girl. Sorry only just seen your reply!! She's around 5 now, no use for mating though silent seasons make it really hard to tell when she ready. Had her put to twice with no results a couple of years ago.
  18. Had just the same when I used mine for the first time a few weeks ago, if you push it to the side it works but not all the time. I don't think the collar can be fixed. I sold mine and just had a MK3. The only thing I thought of too try and make it useable was if the collar was taped up after the batteries were put in pulling it to the side.
  19. My border suffers the same when she bushes in brambles, too busy finding rabbits to bother about her self and scratches around her eyes, face and ears. I usually bathe them with a cold tea bag when she starts to rub at them and carry on for a couple of days and it subsides. She won't be stopped she enjoys it too much.
  20. Got a whippet now 18 months 22". Skin is like tissue, ripped him self a couple of times now on wire. Good as gold with ferrets, took to the lamp after a couple of trips out. Slow to learn gets tired and cold after a couple of hours, only by the end of the season did he realise what it was all about. Looking forward to a better season next time now he's a bit wiser.
  21. 686e black 30" sport, use it for ferals and when sat in a hide and it's great. I agree though it's a bit heavy when out for a wander though. Over all a great gun.
  22. Cheers every one and spot on. I rang my local FEO who confirmed that it doesn't make any difference until I renew my SGC and then it still remains two separate licences but with the same expiry dates.. £50 is the price for FAC. Cheers for the advice on choice, I have no idea when it comes to rifles as it is not something I considered until I kept seeing foxes out of the range of the shotgun.
  23. Hello all. I have a shotgun cert but I am interested in buying a rifle. I have heard of Coterminous Certificate, am I right in believing that this puts both on to one licence. What do I need to prove to the firearms dept other then I did for my Shotgun, how much will it cost me and any advice on best rifle for Fox? Cheers.
  24. I give my whippet a rabbit a week skinned and quartered, heads to the ferrets (the first thing they eat if you give them a whole rabbit anyway). I shoot feral pigeons that the the whippet also has, take the head and wings off, pluck them then let him eat the whole carcass. Never much left and hardly any muck to clean up. The terrier wont touch either of them though. rest of the week James welbeloved and tripe, every now and then raw egg and sardines in oil. The whippet shines like he's been glossed!
  25. He doesn't have access to the pond and can't drink the water. The frogs and toads though can get into the back yard and I know that toads release a poison when attacked. Can't say that I've seen him with either prior to him getting sick, but coincidentaly I let him on to the lawn tonight to eat some grass to try and help his stomache and within minutes he was chasing a frog into the pond! No slobbering though.
