taken on whippet looking for history
Gaz_1989 replied to jonnygray's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Hello, im afraid i cant offer you any information about your dog but i can tell you what i used to do with my EBT when i was trying to get him to retrieve shot birds (nightmare it was!) I had a fluffy toy (teddy, bird, rabbit, anything) then just throw it around the garden (or get a mate to chuck it over the fence) and when he brings it back, really praise him and make sure he lets you take it off him and put it in a bag or something so he knows its yours. Might not work and im sure there are people on here that have trained whippets to do this and can offer better advice than i can. -
Thanks to everyone who has replied. I appreciate what is being said about not getting hung up on an exact cross and this it very true. I do like the whippety lurchers yes and i would consider a pure whippet i guess. Thanks again to all and i will cont. my research. Thanks Gaz

Not being funny but whats the difference? Is this the order of which breed is the sire and which the dam? Which would be better in your opinion? Thanks Gaz

Hello everyone, just after a few more opinions on the following lurcher crosses... beddy/whip x whip beddy/whip x grey/whip collie/grey x beddy whip wheaton/grey x whippet Basically im after a general mooching/rabbit dog and have been advised towards these sort of crosses. I have considered a pure whippet as the size would be great (after a small dog). But would like a rough or broken coat i think, for protection to the dog and i just prefer the look to be honest. So can anyone reccomend anything further or advise on the above? What would the temperament of some of the above

Hey again tote, i see where your coming from and apologise about how i worded the questions. Thats one thing i hate about forums, im thinking one thing in my head and it comes out different on the screen. Its the same when people start arguing/banter-ing, you cant tell between sarcasm and anger etc. Again sorry about that. I see what your saying, and the 50 yard figure is alot more than i thought, thats why i wanted to ask the question, i wouldnt be shooting from that far at all. Obviously im not saying im a perfect shot, and there is always room for improvement but im comfortable

That doesn't sound like a nice experience ditch! I will deffo remember that one mate. Cheers

Hey, my problem/question wasnt to do with the accuracy of my shot. I was referring more to the power at further distance. For example if assuming at 45 yards i can get a perfect head shot, would there still be enough power to kill? How far could you go before the impat is lessened due to distance? That is sort of what i was getting at but thanks for reply. Gaz

Ive posted this in the 'general licence' section above but think people are missing it with it being in the pinned area... Basically is there a general licence for rabbits and rats etc? A printable version like there is for the birds? Ive printed the 'licence to kill or take certain birds.....' to carry with my air rifle in my folder, along with written permissions etc. But wondering if there is one for small mammals because i cant find it anywhere? Many thanks Gaz

Thanks very much for replys. Just what i needed to hear. I once had a crafty shot at a pigeon from about 20 feet (7 yards) and got it in the throat, it was instantly out of its misery :-) Just wanted to know what you all had to say on the subject. Cheers All.

Hello all, i dont want this to sound a daft question but how far away do you think i could risk being to kill a rabbit with a head shot with my daystate X2 sports, .22 calibre? What about birds too, like maggies/crows etc. When ive shot rats/maggies etc before ive only been about 10-20 feet away so not really an issue with killing them from that range. And also where is the best part of the head to get a rabbit (or bird) ? Ive been told to aim for the eye, is this correct? Thanks all, Gaz

I know this thread has been dormant for a few days but just wanted to ask a couple more questions... Those who do keep your dogs outside - Are they in a closed/confined kennel and run? Or is it a traditional kennel where they just lie/sleep and can roam the garden as they wish? Which would the dog prefer? And if allowed to 'roam' the garden then would the dog be constantly trying to come indoors? Thanks Gaz

This year's General Licenses 2008
Gaz_1989 replied to Coney's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Hello, just been printing off the general licence 'to kill or take certain birds to prevent serious damage or disease' but cant find one for mammals. Is there not one for rabbits, rats etc any more? I remember having one of the old DEFRA ones. Thanks Gaz -
Thanks alot everyone. Think i will just go up for a look around like you say first, without the rifle. Just get a feel for the place. And will deffo get the farmer a bottle of something Cheers all Gaz

Cheers. It is really hard mate . Like is said i started looking at least 2 years ago. Ive done door knocking on farms. E-Mailing, asking at golf courses. Sending a 'standard' letter. You name it, i tried it. I gave up looking really a couple months back and thought my age was holding me back more than anything (i wouldnt want a 19 year old lad shooting on my land in fairness) but finally it looks like i may be getting somewhere. Keep at it mate and keep looking. Gaz

Hello all, not really posted much in this section since joining, usually spend my time in the lurcher section as im trying to gain information as getting a lurcher soon. However my main activity at the moment is my air rifle. I had my first air rifle at 13 and my dad always instilled the safety aspects and how to be responsible. He also instilled the laws and regulations about shooting on private property etc etc. However when for my 17th birthday (2 years ago) i got my Daystate X2 sports and have spent the last 2 years trying to get some shooting permission but with no success. What other dog to accompany a lurcher???
Gaz_1989 replied to Gaz_1989's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Cheers to everyone who has replied. Looks like a little terrier it will be then Will deffo be getting the lurcher first anyway and bring him on a bit. Then introduce a terrier later (if we decide to get one.) Im working on the lurcher being a house dog at the moment, mum says theyre too big for in the house but she will see sense, lol. I just think that a better bond will exist if hes in the house with me and will see more of people in general than being kenneled alone. Gaz -
Nice looking dog mate. Hope he works well for you. Gaz

What other dog to accompany a lurcher???
Gaz_1989 replied to Gaz_1989's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
That was the first thing i suggested to my dad, about the staffy/EBT being of no use in the field. However i rekon alot of staffy/EBT owners would disagree and say that they can be used... Which terrier would you reccomend? Am i right in thinking that they will be a better guard dog/watch dog than a lurcher? Thanks Gaz -
Good pics mate. That lurcher looks a really solid dog. Gaz

Thats terrible news mate. Very sorry to hear it. Keep your chin up and keep at it. Gaz
