  1. Please stick to riding legally. The sport is under attack from powerful and bigoted lobbying groups (sound familiar?) Try this lot: http://www.vdsr.co.uk/
  2. I had a first cross collie greyhound with an inherited fault in the hip area. It was not hip dysplasia, but the symptoms were similar. Have heard anecdotal of other first cross collie greyhounds with inherited hip problems, including one very severe case in a puppy.
  3. Many slow cooker meals: http://www.50plusfriends.com/cookbook/crockpot/index-5b.html
  4. Thermal imaging machine -- George Drake, Eye, Nr Peterborough [pm' ed phone no] Brilliant on muscle and tendon injuries and also trapped nerves. If you go there, once his assistant has taken the thermal images of your dog, make sure you listen to what George says whilst he's manipulating or massaging your dog because he will probably explain the problem and give you some idea of what to do if/ when it happens again. £20 for a consultation, I think.
  5. Location: near Rugby Price: £225 Payment on collection please. I would like to sell this gear as one lot, and have priced competitively to try and facilitate this. MK3 ferret locator and 1 leather collar and transmitter. Little use, batteries ok, ready to go. 59 purse nets of various size with cleft oak and ash pegs, plus 4 good size double peggers. Little used and good condition. 1 Nylon longnet, now set at about 40yards to increase bagging, double strand selvedged top and bottom mesh, leaded bottom line, quick and easy to set, very effective on uneven ground
  6. Got this link via a blog that some of you might read. Try searching stuff like 'salukis', 'deerhounds', 'hunting' and so on. There's some interesting old footage. This one cracked me up: http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=577
  7. Although I would rather consult a running dog specialist, these are worth a try: http://www.mctimoney-chiropractic.org/treat_animals.htm My local practitioner straightened out my old bitch for me, and the treatment worked fine.
  8. Was it a general small animal vet that looked at the dog? If so, it would be preferable to see a greyhound vet, or even a good 'boneman' (get some references first though), and get the problem diagnosed by someone who specializes in running dogs. What region are you in? Someone may be able to recommend.
  9. Would it be feasible to establish a fighting fund to support lurcher and terrier owners in cases such as this? Maybe even using this site as a means to organise and gather funds. Like it or not, the legal and political routes are the only effective options left to do anything about this ridiculous state sponsored harassment. The political option is really a non starter because hunting is not media friendly and the hunting community is too argumentative to present a united front. Fighting convictions and setting legal precedents about interpreting the Hunting Act has to be the way to go, but go
  10. Oops! Sorry for repeated post- 'puter problems. Miniature pigs for sale here: http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=75351
  11. Even one small pig can turn over a lot of ground. But if the wife insists, the rare breed survival trust might be worth a try. I expect the river cottage forum will also list pig breeders.

  18. Old lurcher been suffering with constipation for a couple of days. I' m sure someone on here recommended it. One of the veterinary sites I googled recommended mineral oil (paraffin, right?). Bit concerned about giving paraffin in case it is toxic. She' s essentially retired now, but I will go out with the lamp later, to see if the normal reflex to empty before going lamping does the trick. Does a teaspoon of paraffin in food sound correct dose for 20 kg dog?
  19. Too many people in a small place. The current government has successfully eradicated the sense of freedom that came with living in this country. Much knowledge and history contained within the buildings, roads, landscape and people if you look hard enough (about the only thing I would miss).
  20. Do it now! You' ll work like a slave, lose money on jobs, have people take advantage of your youth and inexperience. But in five years time, when you are making your own living as your own boss (probably doing something you don' t even anticipate at the moment), you' ll be thankful you had the balls to do it. Never stop looking for opportunities, don' t be afraid to ask, and do all you can to ensure that your pricing is right. Best to be making your own luck, the way things are at the moment.
  21. You do lead a colorful life mackem Your story kind of illustrates the point I am trying to get over: ask any criminal law barrister, and probably even a good many judges - people go to prison everyday for things they haven' t done. This happens because the legal system is imperfect. With regard to hunting, simply by being out there, we are exposed to risk of malicious or unfair treatment or prosecution because the hunting act can be so broadly interpreted by the police, who tend to assume guilt. It' s not fair and it' s not right. But that doesn' t mean you shouldn' t arm yourself in advance
  22. The Countryside Alliance were handing out a booklet in 2005, advising on the Hunting With Dogs Act. Part of it is a sticky on the THL lurchers section. I' ll paraphrase the 'What can the police do?' section in the context of the original question here: You are not obliged to assist the police in prosecuting you. Simply state the lawful activity you have been carrying out. If the officer "reasonably suspects" you have, are, or are going to hunt illegally, they can arrest you. If the officer "reasonably believes" there is evidence of a hunting offence on you, your dog, in your van, o
