  5. i have a bit of land that is infested with rabbits and there are causing problems, what i need is some one who owns ferrets to come with me to thin the rabbits out. the stretch of land i need done produced over 150 rabbits last time and seems worse this year, i run my dogs on this land and even though i have lost count of the culls made it hasnt made a mark on the population. i am in norfolk near the thetford area, this will be a all day thing so if you have the kit and can be behaved on the land it could become a regular thing. this permission was hard to get so no fu**ing around.
  6. i think my dogs past and pressent, have become what they are by respect and consistancy. as long as you are consistant with them and have an order to things the dogs do it themself. basic traing is one thing but the lifetime of killing that they have and the abillity to adapt to conditions is awsome.so natural. and watching a puppie that you bred develop is the best. my dogs are in the pet/worker as that depends on my time and how much permission i can obtain but if i could be out every night and my dogs kept as workers i dont think they would be any better. i think i have a better bo
  7. i am lucky as i see that amount of wild life quite a bit but i am in the fens ,my dogs on black soil, the fields are massive and its hard to get on the rabbits which can be lamp shy,i need a red filter but cant get one for my lamp, there is a badger set on one of the wooded spots around but i avoid going anywhere near them.
  8. i gave my old mate a call and asked if i could go out for a shine over his land,as always he told me the rules and i agreed. it got to 10 oclock and i couldnt wait any longer, drissiling with rain and constant wind, perfect. out comes by beddi/whippet,wellies on lamp charged and off we go. i knew it was going to be good as soon as we arived. driving down the lane to where i park there were a gathering of red deer.the dog spotted them and went crazy jumping all over the car and scratching the dash. when ever i see these deer i have had a good night cause there presence means that the land
  9. with experiance comes gears usually, the brindle is on her 3rd season with a fair bit of experiance and beleave me she has got gears, the black one her 2 nd season and is coming on excellant, but the gearing down isnt as good as the brindle but in my oppinion ive not seen a dog catch rabbits as good as the brindle she makes it look easy, mark the black one does regulary catch the 20 mark but shes still to head strong she gets it from her sire, but like i said in the past that gives her a very strong prey drive and somtimes thats handy mark sounds like u know whatr your talking about, the
  10. any advice on getting close to lamp shy rabbits with a young dog. i am wearing dark clothing and not using the lamp to much ( 1 look walk up and on again for the slip). finding that on the scond shine rabbits hitting full speed towards safty and no chance for the dog. went out again last night wind and rain in my face but only 1 rabbit (squatter)even though i saw overe 50. advice please as i dont want to mess up a dog that is showing signs of becoming a great tool with my own enexpereience.
  11. for taking rabbits you name a dog breed better,in what ever hunting situation ferreting, lamping,in the woods, around water or all of them great acceleration, brains, turning and not the hardest dog to train. the amount of squatters mine get on the lamp in conparisson to my salukix is vast this can only be down to her size and wait, and they have a great nose to.
  12. i have the same problem with the same breed no advice to give its driving me
  13. first things first if like me you are not as experienced in lurchers as some, then buy a book. i got the lurcher by jack sheardown and it gives me a base to follow and try my own ideas as things happen with my two. as for on the lead, find a quiet place that you know of and walk like you would normally when your dog pulls than 1 short sharp pull back to the possition you want the dog to walk in and the word heel. when the dog is by your side start to walk again,it will probally start pulling so do the same again.this time when the dog is back by your side make a fuss of them. reduce
