  1. Lovely looking dog. Why do you say Mongrelly? From the breeding it just seems to be Lurcher. I have a lot to learn. What do you mean by specialist dogs. I can understand why a bit of Bull is good for foxing but can you explain a little about specialist.
  2. Hi i live in cornwall. Interests shooting with air rifle. dogs and all things country. Nice to be here. Can anybody tell me how to put up Pics please. Please keep it simple if thats possible.
  3. Do you mean that a straight cross say whippet x collie may for instance show some of a collies instinctive behaviour. Whereas whippet collie x greyhound bull the collie blood is more diluted hence the collies instinctive behaviour is much reduced by more breeds being used? I understood that hip displasia was unknown in Track Greyhounds. That is why i dont understand the desire to import it by using German Shepherds or any Pedigree Breed for that matter?
  4. Hi whats special about a Kelpie compared with a Working Collie. I know nothing about Kelpies. I know what they are and what they do but no experience with the dog.
  5. Well I only have one dog at a time. This is the first Bitch I have had and I like them if she is typical. Like I said earlier I have always fancied a Lurcher but it has to be a good companion Dog as well. Thats a cracking looking dog in the pic. Whats the breeding?
  6. Who knows. But why take a chance dicing with all the dreadful problems that are now firmly in the GSD breed. Apart from my present bitch which is a working strain collie bitch every other dog that I have owned in a lifetime of owning dogs Has been a GSD I love the breed. If you are very lucky you might get the most wonderful Companion Dog with a temperament second to non. If you do you will think you have the best dog in the world. The probability is that you will be lucky to get this great dog past the age of 10 without a serious problem occuring. Show breeders with only one thing in mind. A
  7. I know im a novice with Lurchers thats why I am here asking for advise. However i have a lot of experience with dogs in general. Anyway its a facinating subject which I am enjoying reading about and getting plenty of tips just reading the thread.
  8. Yes and my opinion remains unchanged there are so many problems with the gsd now that `I really cant understand you flirting with the idea of inporting those faults into such thoughtfully bred dogs. It seems to me that more thought and care is taken over Lurcher breeding than any pedigree dog. Your breeding is based on the dogs performance and physical soundness. The german shepherd now is bred by show people for winning silverware and good looking pups for Joe public who knows no better. Once these faults are in they are there to be passed on. The fact that the individual does not suffer from
  9. I had mostly pups from german imports. I never had an imported dog. The Germans are unlikely to let their best dogs go. Anyway it seems that the idea is popular so i will not press my point.
  10. I have had German Shepherds for 50 years. I have watched the Breed fall apart in that time. Truth be told they were starting to get into trouble back then. The arrogance of the KC and the breed clubs is staggering as they have altered the backline and ruined the hips. Out of the many that I have owned I have only had two fantastic temperaments. By that I mean happy go lucky confident hooligans. Having said that one died at Six years and the other at Seven a very old dog basically full of arthritis. I really think breeding Shepherd into lurchers is not a good idea.
  11. Mooching. I have had dogs all my adult life. I know dogs I understand dogs and think I train and get good results I am keen on quiet handling and can drop my dogs on a quiet hiss or squeek and hand signal so i understand what you guys are saying and understand you. I have personaly owned german Shepherds all my life but now the breed is totaly fxxxxd by the breeders and KC so I have a rescue working bred collie which has been a revelation. 9 years old and as fit and fast as when 12 months old. Its just that all of these years I have admired the dedication that goes into lurcher breeding. If I
  12. Was Merle the lurcher that he wrote about in the book?
  13. Im not a novice worked with dogs for most of my life. I should imagine i might get on with a bit of Bull. How about bull cross Collie then grehound cross collie cross whippet.
  14. I have read a few of his books I was given a couple. Odd or not very good read. I particularly enjoyed the one about the Pitt Dog the name of the book escapes me.
  15. Thanks all. I once went to a Plummer kennels to buy a plummer. When I chatted to the owner Brian Plummer inevitably came up and its seems that they took a lot of his stock of Plummers New Blood I think because that is what I bought but thats another story. They also had a lot of his Lurchers. They told me that the only type of Lurcher Plummer would entertain was a straight Collie Greyhound Cross. That was the story I got. I wish I had scrapped the idea off the Plummer and got a Lurcher from the way things turned out Anyway what is your thoughts on his Collie Greyhound cross? Apparently he was
  16. Without doubt he is a very effective but old fashioned Trainer. There are many ways to get results his are excellent and the way that springer ignored that Pheasant was excellent. I can see why people think he is picking the dog up by the ears but he explained that. I saw nothing to make a fuss such as this. PC at work again.
  17. I have only seen them in Spain They are a much loved and abused breed there. I believe there are 3 types of Podenco I have seen 2. The one I am most familiar with I saw inland from the Costa blanca where we had a house. They seem great dogs. The one I was familiar was similar to the Ibethan Hound I was always intrigued with the way that they used to stand still on their hind legs peering over the top of the scrub. I once saw A dog that i believe may have been one of the others breeds working scrub frantically with a bell atached to it so the owner could keep track of it. There is a family near
  18. Well i kind of expected that so a bit more info. I have always liked the lurcher but a lifetime of owning dogs and its eluded me. If i had a lurcher i would want it as a companion which would enhance a mooch around in the fields and hedgerows. Spring the odd rabbit and just be a pal as is my bitch Collie asleep at my feet but really a coiled spring as its time to go out. Size medium ish. I would work it but not as a fanatical Lurcher Man. Is that a bit helpful.?
  19. Hi just joined and I know this will have been asked many times but what is the ideal breeding for a general purpose Lurcher.
