Just got back in from my new permission. Been out with Stavross giving him the guided tour? Unfortunately came back empty handed? Loads of hares but very few rabbits. One bonus is I reckon this going to be good for Charlie. After having a wonder round getting the lay of the land, who did we see in the distance? Charlie! Just a bit to far to shoot with the 17. Back to the van for Stavs fox caller it was. Got ourselves tucked nicely away in the open shed, this has a great arc over the area Charlie was sniffing round. Gave it an hour with the caller, waiti

Always nice to have new places to walk round, the added bonus is it’s only 5 minutes from my house.

To be honest she was fairly easy going. She realizes I’m not just a muppet walking round with a gun! The livestock is use to a bit of noise as a bloke teaches clay pigeon on her land. Also there is a model plane club in the next field, which she is going to ask if I can shoot there as well.

Well after a little bit of ground work I’ve been to meet a lady and her father In law this morning at a local equestrian centre. Shes been having a few issues with rabbits. Also Charlie rummaging through the bins and sniffing around her sheep. After a walk round and discussing her needs she gave me the permission to shoot on her land?? Happy days 45 acres?? Already seen a den and trails from Charlie. There’s a shed I can use as a hide which she said I can use. Going to try and get up this week a see what’s about. Will let you know how I get on.

I won’t be using the fmj ammo it’s just what came with the rifle. Definitely wouldn’t use it in the field. Not sure I’d be confident enough to file down the tips?

Great pictures UD. Was it hornady superperformance ammo? I asked this question to Mark Ripley from 260 RIPs and that’s what he recommended.

TThe 308 ammo I’ve got came with the ruger American which I bought of my mate. They are FMJ PPU which he used on the military range. No good for in the field as I’d reckon they’d pass straight through any quarry?

Are these widely available walshie? Need to speak to my RFD but didn’t want to go in blind. He’s usually pretty good and doesn’t fob me off, but want to go in with a bit of a heads up?

Another one to put the cat amongst the pigeons, after the big scope debate? Just wondering if any of you have used Ballistic 308 rounds and which you have found to be the most reliable? I’ve potentially got some more permission and there is a range of different shooting to be done. So need to get the 308 ammo sorted. Its a chance I’ve got deer (when in season), hence my 308. Also foxes which may be over kill for a fox but still using it?

Thanks for the input fellas. This topic has certainly raised a debate on FFP or variable mag. To me I think it’s just personal preference. For me I think it’s stick to what you know and like, so it’s a variable mag. I think x24 will be to much and will only use this on my 308. For the 17 it’s going to be a x16 or x18 mag. Been great reading all your input and reasons why one is better than the other. Happy hunting fellas what ever scope you use?

Priced up the MTC viper, comes in 3-18 as the 16 has been discontinued. I like the option to zoom in and out on what I’m actually shooting?

I thinks it’s due to the fact that it’s what I’ve always been use to having. You do put a very good point across and totally see where you coming from. ( no pun intended ?)??

Lol! Only need a 16” barrel looks short due to the stock running up the barrel, does feel really good though. I’m thinking of getting the DPT so I can convert from 308 & 17 buy getting the different baffles ( still need to look more into this, have spoke to the rep and says that this is possible)

At the moment I’ve just put a 3-9 on it till I get a new scope, the option was take 6-24 off my 308. Had a go of Stavross 17 T-bolt browning last night and hit a rabbit at about 110, he’s got a 16 on that so might just get something like that for mine? Thanks for the input fellas??

Hi All, Thinking about putting a 6x24x50 scope on my new Tikka T1X? Do you think this is over kill for a 17HMR? Thoughts please.
