I hope not to bore yall but I returned to the fish trap as I felt a real connection with the place.I never camp in the same place twice but I made an exception for this place.
When I arrived the water was muddy and catfish had moved in.
Supper was a sirloin cut in chunks.Soaked in Moores spicy marinade.Few peppers and mushrooms. This was the best tasting meal I've ever cooked on a creek bank.
I listened to a good coonhound race just before falling asleep.
I woke up at 430.Started the fire for coffee when I heard squawking at the edge of my camp then chirps and growls.I knew they was otter.I reached for my coon hunting light and switched it on.One otter bolted through the middle of camp nearly knocking me down.He got in a woodpile behind my camp and was growling.
So I growled back. The otter let out a snort as if to say he was unimpressed with me.He continued to hunt upstream.I warned him that someday I would get even for him scaring me.
Daybreak finally came. Seen some beaver.Caught some more smallmouth.
I packed up camp and began paddling upstream. After a mile or so I seen ripples coming from a log.I paddled over quietly to investigate. It was the otter eating a catfish.
I paddled as close as I could.
When he turned to look my way I yelled at the top of my lungs. It scared the otter and he hit the water lickity split.I had gotten my revenge lol.

Do you have rattlesnakes in your part of the country ?, and is it legal to kill and eat them ?.
Yes we have them but not as many compared to copperheads or cottonmouth.Im not sure of legalities right now as they can change.

Take a sharp stick and gig those frogs you recently posted. It tastes better in my opinion. Have you ever had frog legs?

Looks a nice little getaway that mate.. just what's needed sometimes!
What state are you in if you don't mind me asking?? Any big mammals, reptiles or other critters knocking about to be wary of?? It must change your mindset when you camp out. Very boring here in the UK.. nothing to get concerned about other than the odd big cat roaming around the countryside.... allegedly!!
I'm in Alabama. This recent trip was just across the line in Tennessee. Everything in the woods here can bite or sting. From poison ivy and black widows. To alligators and snapping turtles. The only critter here who might kill you is poisonous snakes.Cottonmouths are the only aquatic pit viper and in my opinion they are the devils handiwork.
The most dangerous part isn't the critters in my opinion. This recent trip temps rose to 95 with a heat index of 105f.Thats 40.5celsius. There is no cell phone signal. If you get in trouble you are alone. But that's the same part I enjoy lol.

I loaded some gear in my kayak rather last minute.I hadn't planned a trip but wanted to get away.
I paddled to an old indian fish trap and set up camp.
Caught some decent smallmouth.
Supper was simple.smoked sausage and black coffee.
As I drifted off to sleep I wondered how many Indians had camped at this spot.

Silly question but it possible to take one with a dog?
I would say it is possible but not probable.I have never encountered a bobcat in a situation where he could be caught by a terrier or lurcher in my area.I have heard rumours of Yankees digging them but never met the people. The only one I know for sure taken by terrier was by an Englishman this past winter. He works a pack of foxhound on coyotes for rich folk who pay him a salary. His foxhounds put a bobcat in a woodpile and a black terrier was brought in.I have watched the private video and trust this man. This is the only one I personally know of.

Find you a shallow fast moving creek for a snapper this time of year in my opinion.Look for cool running water. My little brother trapped some.I always preferred to pick them up by the tail. 20 years ago there was a black market for snapper meat. Some men got in trouble. Now days in Alabama I think your only allowed one per person per day harvest.

Just seen three small beaver lodges on a walk earlier, and a few muskrat swimming.
I enjoy watching muskrats. They have a tough life. The other night I was out and seen 4 baby coons that appeared orphaned. As I approached them in my kayak, their mama appeared over the dirt bank and began growling.I speak fluent coon so began making the fighting noises of 2 big boar coons.knowing the sow and babies would run.It worked lol.

I will give yall facts from the source of a small business in Alabama. Not Russian bots or Communist news network.Under Trump small business thrived.Small businesses in my area was able to purchase better equipment.Fuel and food was cheap.
Under Biden fuel has soared.Food prices has doubled.Yankee refugees are pouring into Dixie because Democrat states are so chaotic.
I bought a small bucket of carbide bits for my business last week.Under trump this bucket cost $600 Under Biden this same bucket of bits is $890.
Any man who could vote for Biden should be hung for treason.

Yesterday I watched the sun rise over the same stretch of water that Davey Crocket hunted and trapped.Made me think of how hard it must have been to survive.
Today we had storms so I walked some small creeks as predators feed during storms in small creeks.

In my area once a terrier makes it around 2 sharp turns the groundhog will be waiting for him.Our ground is hard so even a groundhog can't dig fast.Usually the groundhog digs away when using too large of a terrier that takes to long to get there or the terrier gets stuck.

I received a call last night from some people in the city who had 4 groundhogs living under a wood floor tool shed in their backyard. They wanted them gone as did the neighbors.
This morning I loaded up little red and went to check it out.The entrance was tight even for a 13 lb dog.
Of course he settled under the toolshed.I trenched a few feet in to him.One groundhog accounted for and 3 bolted out the back.Landowner was happy.

20 year sentence

20 years ago I married my childhood sweetheart. We spent the day together at my father's river camp.It was peaceful.
Spent most of the day watching ospreys hunt.
And catching tiny bream.
As we sat down to lunch in the camper I began to laugh as this camper had more square footage than our first house. We started our marriage in a 2 bedroom house trailer and bought an acre of land.My wife had to bottle raise a litter of pups right after our honeymoon lol.She took them to work with her in a shoebox.I remember loading a bulldog in my pickup headed to the mountains.I would kiss her on the jaw and say baby I will be back in 3 to 5 days or 3 to 5 years. She always had my back but always cried when I left.Bulldog lifestyle is better read about than lived. She has raised and nursed terriers back to health for me.Some she had to teach to walk again from coonhound paralysis.
I've always admired gameness in dogs, chickens and men.But honestly I've never seen any of these that was as tenacious as my wife.I hope to spend another 20 years with her.
