  1. It is isn't it! I never realised this bit of the forum existed. I forget each time what setting I was using for some of them. I wonder if there is a website that might do techno speak for idiots for me...I lose the plot when I hear shutter speeds, and ISO reminds me of the films I used to buy when it was real film rather than digital.
  2. Flowering daffs under our pine tree, ones at front are just opening too.
  3. These are ones taken with the normal lens on camera- yes I love my dogs... Some landscape ones
  4. Camera has a ton of settings and I tend to use the sport mode or the portrait one. I have used some of the others but the results have been a bit varied. I have never felt brave enough to do anything on it manually. New lens is a canon as is the camera itself 450d.
  5. Unfortunately I am a real "no idea what I am doing" when it comes to the logic behind pressing the shutter. I take loads of pictures and just hope for the best- and get lucky! Sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't--I had a lot of really nausea inducing blurry ones with the new lens, and keep thinking maybe I need to invest in a tripod or something?! Either that or lose the tremor! Having such lovely subjects does make it easier- they are quite photogenic at times...just shame the owner is such a numpty with a camera to do them real justice.
  6. I have a new lens and am finding it highlights how much I shake when I hit the shutter! Hence the blurry action shots that were flukes!
  7. In dobes it is important to allow the female parts to reach maturity by allowing them to have a season for everything to "drop into place" as this can prevent them going on to being incontinent after spaying. There are also some interesting articles around that go into more depth about the pluses and minuses of neutering males/females.
  8. Thanks for the info, cannot PM you for some reason it won't let me. Just concerned as our girl dobe eats anything she gets her paws on and will also chase them down. Not shot as far as I can see, and according to husband, who was chatting to a bloke, who spoke to one of the wardens for the area MOD got a firm in to sort out the problem. Area we walk is near Bulford-area up on ridge near the Kiwi, but also they have done other areas of the plain, not sure where. Also not sure if they used something else to reduce the number of bunnies but it has gone from one or two carcasses to dozens...
  9. Have just discovered the reason for the multiple carcasses around where we walk, on Salisbury plain. Apparently numbers were out of control so they have been gassing them. Does anyone know if there are any health concerns for dogs that eat one of these rabbit carcasses? Our dobe is a nightmare for snacking on a walk and will catch rabbits too if she gets chance. Just concerned about what the effects of the gassing might have... Thanks
  10. Just an update to this She true to form developed another rash this autumn after a spring and summer free from trauma, well except for the split rear pad! I was away for a week with work and came back to this She ended up on antibiotics to get rid, and vet took samples, which only came back showing staph intermedius. None the wiser, so have got a referral to a dermatologist, and am also going to get her thyroid checked. Shame as she is in pretty fine form most days, and this her usually
  11. She might not have a high bunny kill rate, but she manages to feed herself at least one day a week! It does however mean that location of cats, chickens and other such interesting stuff has to be checked out whenever we go to let her "offlead"!
  12. If you want a docked dobe then you will have to import or get one older than 3 yrs. There are sadly many coming into rescue all the time who need new homes, and not every one comes in with "issues". We have fostered 4 so far, and hope to do so again. As for the dobe "working" - the "dock and crop" was based on their protection role and goes back to Herr Dobermann who "built" the dobe from using a variety of breeds. The dock =No tail to be grabbed or damaged, The crop= can pinpoint sound location more accurately. We have docked bitch and natural dog and tbh it does not change the dog's
  13. Some dogs can have "silent" seasons. They will have cycle but there might not be many physical signs. A friends dobe did this. I don't know about the health aspects of delayed season or absent season. Have you asked the vet about it at all?
  14. Asking vet this on day one might have saved you a night of worrying...and over three pages of venting spleen!
  15. HI there, Sounds like he is just getting over all the ups and downs. It is always a great moment when you get that little bit of trust showing through... We foster for a dobe rescue and recently took on a female who lost massive amounts of weight in kennels. She was skin and bone and the rescue feared she would not last the weekend. She could hardly move, struggled to get in/out of the car and did absolutely nothing but sleep and eat for the first 4 days. Her head was down and she showed no interest in anything...despite best effort of our dobe girl. We stuck to the rules of our house
  16. If you have a farm shop nearby ask them nicely if you can raid their "bone bin". They will have to pay to have it taken away and as long as it is kept fridged- which I think they have to be- then you can pick up an awful lot of great stuff. We go after their butchery day and fill bin bags with stuff...and then bag it up in portion size. We get steaks, mince, ribs, necks, trotters and all sorts of other stuff that they cannot sell over the counter. Might not be everyones cup of tea, but it is free... our dogs get so excited when the bags appear as they know there is a huge bone in there for t
  17. Thanks- I have changed just about everything we use in the house to sensitive or eco friendly...even washing with soapnuts would you believe!! I have also steam cleaned the carpets to remove anything that might be there...We also changed her food and are very strict about what she gets. Sadly, she has a new outbreak as of yesterday this time back of head/neck left shoulder, left rear leg. Husband took her to a different place than usual for their runabout and it seems to have been something from there. If it was height of Summer I could understand it being so frequent but what the heck is
  18. Our dobe is mainly raw fed but on occasions I have to be inventive when we are travelling in a small campervan. We trialled her on the ORIJEN after I spent a long time researching alternatives and from our experience ORIJEN is great! She loved it and so do the foster dogs that we take. You need LESS than you think compared to standard kibble, and we worked out that one bag lasts as long as the alternatives. It took a little trial and error to get the right amount for the dobes we had, but it was brilliant. If you add water it does not bulk out so less risk of bloat etc, as no grains in it an
  19. Sorry but it does really depend on the dog and its energy requirements, and metabolism...just like like humans! It also depends on whether you are feeding kibble or raw feeding? How much/what are you feeding at the moment and its current weight-has something changed that you feel this is no longer right?
  20. our dobe has been eating rabbit for some time. As a youngster she would often find an old carcass and crunch the bones on a walk...initially it was off putting for me! but she seemed to enjoy it more if I tried to remove it, so I stopped. She has suffered no ill effects to date and now she is older she has caught and eaten the odd bunny. Any rabbits we remove from her, go in the freezer just to ensure anything hitching a ride on it is dead...and then she gets it with fur but minus guts. She will eat whatever part she can get her teeth into though- she wastes nothing!
  21. Ours is not a hunting dog but she spends a lot of time out charging through undergrowth so I hope this might help. She also rolls in foxpoo at every opportunity so she ends up getting fairly regular showers. I try to avoid strong chemicals whenever possible for her and us... A friend recommend adding garlic to the food to make the dog less appealing to tick/insects but I never found it to make a lot of difference. We tried a couple of different things last year. A spray/rinse called Dyna-mite kept both me and our dobe bite free from mozzies and flying critters. Husbando got nibbled as
  22. HI there, So sorry for your dogs discomfort, it is looking suspiciously like it is related to the new bedding...directly or indirectly. While I was reading up on allergies for our dobe, I recall reading that hay and straw can provide a home for mites and suchlike. If the piriton does not work, it might be worth asking the vet for a different one. A bit like humans, dogs can respond better to a different antihistamine. Our dobe did much better on atarax than on piriton. Do you have access to any shredded paper? I know some kennels use their shredding to bed down the dogs who are kn
  23. Thanks for the compliments, but no we cannot take the credit. We chose her breeder after tons of research into health, temperament etc. I believe she has one Amazon dog on her dams line as a great grandparent but the rest is Khaneve and there is a lot of Euro blood (Royal Bell) on her sire's side. I know several of her litter sisters/brothers are doing well on the show circuit but we got her as a pet in the first instance and are loving every minute of being owned by her. Her skin is almost back to normal now. The homeopathy seems to be working to stop the worst of the after effects of th
