  1. We always use 10.5" for the roker. I normally just shoot the multimono sole trammels and get a little of everything, but the smooth hounds are so thick, they fill up the gear in no time. So it's a good way of avoiding them. We only start seeing them inshore around late May, and % have moved back outside by end of August.
  2. Ah I get you. These are crosstide trammels, the lead line is number 5 and the float rope is number 4. They couldn't have been cheap to rig. Netting is too heavy and bulky for my beach boat, but it was cheaper to buy these second hand and strip them out of the frame than buy new.
  3. Could I ask what a Danish rig is? When it comes to ferret nets I've never actually seen any in the flesh, but I've rigged plenty of commercial fishing gear, so Understand how to rig a net and set it by a third/half/two-thirds etc. Thanks for your replies so far!
  4. I think these nets with need repairing in places, the hydraulic hauling gear isn't very forgiving if anything catches up when hauling. As I'm new to this ferreting game, I have never used longnets. Would you keep them as trammels or just use the 4" inner lint on its own?
  5. Sounds virtually perfect. The inner wall of the trammels should be 30 meshes deep, so they could be cut to make two longnets. As these nets are rigged to a third, and longnets are rigged to a half, I could make 1x100 yard, 2x50s, 2x25 and a few stop nets out of one trammel. All from netting I didn't actually want. Sounds a winner, better get the needles filled.
  6. Hello All, what is the height of a longnet? How many meshes deep are they? I'm only asking as I brought 12 100yard trammel nets for for my boat, but I only want them for the floatline and leadline, as I want to eventually rig mono roker nets in the frame. This will leave me with 1200 yards of 6z nylon trammel net with a 4mm poly cord through the bottom and top selvage. They are 6ft deep at the minute, but it's no problem cutting the net in half and stitching a new headline/bottom rope on them, so each net could rig up to make 2 x 150 yard longnets
  7. It's funny how terminology is different across the trades. As I'm a part time commercial fisherman, we always size the mesh across two bars, so it's the full mesh size. I reckon a multi mono trammel net would hold every rabbit that goes near it. Wouldn't want to clear all the twigs and shit out afterwards though
  8. I will have to contact him and get a day or two in. Give me a better footing to work on!
  9. On his website, it reads £60 a day, so I didn't think it was bad. What do you get for £60 nowadays? I think it's worth a pop, better to get an understanding before I try on my own, hopefully stop silly mistakes from the off
  10. Hello, has anyone been on one of his ferreting days? Ive only just got two ferrets, and as I dont know anyone who goes ferreting, I thought it might be a good investment to learn the basics? I could just buy the gear and give it a go, but there has to be many tricks of the trade, and a day out seeing someone actually do it has got to be worthwhile? The handy bit is he is only 25 mins up the road from me.
  11. As a part time commercial fisherman, I always use south east netting. They are cheaper than anyone else, and have a large stock. They are always very helpful if you give them a bell 01843 290000.
  12. Cheers! Just got to learn the trade now! At least with my commercial fishing background I won't have a problem with nets! I'm sure I can get the needle out and whip a few purse nets out!
  13. Yes it will be galvanised. Im sure the ferrets will like it, I only picked them up a few days ago, lovely friendly things. The last owner had them in a tiny hutch, the claws were well over grown and one looks like it's got ear mites. It keeps scratching his head and black shit in its ears. Ffs a pack of beaphar spot on is a fiver.
  14. Well actually I'm now going to build a ferret court, 8ftx6ftx6ft. I'm just going to put the hutch inside it up one end. I was wondering if 1" 16g mesh would be ok?
  15. Thanks for all the advice. There are two sleeping quarters, so in the top I put a cardboard box with a layer of shavings and filled it up with shredded paper, and in the bottom, I put a layer of shavings and filled it up with hay. On the first night it was bloody cold, so they both went in the top. The next night it was milder, and there was one in each, and the third night they both went in the bottom!
  16. Cheers for the replies! I just didnt know if the move from the house to a frosty garden would do them any good. Or maybe the fur would have got thicker if they werent inside. The ferret air freshener is something else! It doesnt take many pees to start to honk! The hutch was made locally, it isnt symmetrical, so I cant swap doors about.
  17. Hello, I just brought two adult jill ferrets yesterday, and the owner had moved them in her house due to the cold weather a month ago. I have read a hell of a lot about keeping ferrets beforehand, but there' so much contradiction, so I'm not sure what to believe. Would these ferrets be ok to move outside now? The weather has been frosty the last couple of mornings, and the forecast looks the same for the next few days. The hutch they were in is poor, more like an over night type affair. I wanted to build a proper ferret court, but I cant leave them in this. Today I went and got a 5' two-tiered
