  1. Thanks Ian, can the Trail fit on a Picatinny rail, with QR Mounts? Cheers
  2. +1 243 for Roe, foxes etc, .308 for Reds. I've taken down loads of red with my 243 using 100g BT but the 308 is the boy. Just remember there's legal limits for certain deer v certain calibres and power etc. (DSC L1 basics )
  3. So I've decided to take the plunge and buy a thermal scope. I've a few decisions to make; buy a spotter and stick with the Photon for shooting, or buy a thermal rifle scope. Ideally Id get two thermals but can't afford both! Also, both Pulsar and ATN make good scopes, but I'm undecided. My budget's around £2,500, & would welcome any pros and cons from either make. The key features for me are; 1. Detection range 2. Clarity 3. Warranty - 3 years 4. Maximum waterproofing 5. Customer care/after sales. 6. Must be Picatinny rail mounted. I like the
  4. I bought one of these: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F152672178766 Works for 243 and 308. Does what it says on the tin.
  5. I'd most definately go for stainless, I've a blued steel 243 and a 308 stainless, for me it's a no brained if you're out in crap weather a lot gk for stainless. The X bolt I bought is very, very light too. Incidentally, I bought a bigger calibre for Reds, have you considered a 308? Cheap reloads and absolutely devastating in 180g SP's. My friends has a 270, but the hitting power is no where near the 308. He's trading it in for a 308! :-) Gets my vote.
  6. Having looked through a thermal hand held the other night, and been mighty impressed, wonder if anyone has used a rifle scope thermal for any length of time and could advise; 1. Whats it like for quarry identification, eg a fox and distance 2. POI shift? Any issues? 3. Mounting? Is it standard scope mounts and in particular, compatible with a Picatinny? 4. Battery, and duration? 5. Waterproof? I'm regularly out is crap weather 6. Model recommendations? 7. Lastly, any issues with large calibre rifles? Cheers
  7. Alas mate, they're like hens teeth, as you said earlier. Seen one the other day which sold for £151 plus £10 postage, which is a rip off.
  8. I hear you mate, and can understand that completely, there is an awful lot of folk going the extreme way though; http://www.nightvisionforumuk.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=14144
  9. Thought I'd just add another picture to this thread. This is 49g of H414, in .308 with 180g Sierra SP, flat tail bullet @110yds. I'm reasonably happy with grouping which is around 20 mm. Apologies for the target, it's all I had in car :-(
  10. Spot on, looks like very small supply left of these if any, I'm thinking the Extreme route may be an option? But again its a bit of a minefield with having to source an appropriate lens and then getting an adaptor made. By all accounts, this route seems to have the best result in terms of clarity. I'm digging into how and where now... :-(
  11. Cheers mate, Drews lab is in Glasgow so quite near me. atb
  12. Cheers, will this fit my 6.5 x 50 Photon ok?
  13. Excellent, write up! Thank you very much! Even a daft chartered engineer like me can follow it! :-) I'll have a go soon and report back, be good to get more info on fitting a doubler if poss. Found this on youtube; https://youtu.be/k-E3_8mom5E that simple? I'm struggling to find a doubler..... :-(
  14. Folks, I realise there's lots of posts on increasing the magnification, which involves a small bit of surgery to the unit, however could any kind soul on here provide a step by step idiots guide on where to get a doubler, and how to fit it. The warranty is gone on my unit, so happy to now fit a doubler. Also feedback on anyone who's done it would be appreciated. I really love the Photon, it's incredible with an NM 800, but could do with more mag I feel. Also, I'm moving the Photon to a new rifle and intend to shim up the rear mount to avoid all that low cross hair and runni
  15. This is from a video, but can't seem to upload it, so I've screen grabbed it. Anyone know how to upload videos, this is a 12 or 14 Pointer stag.
  16. Dead tree mate, it's a partially sawn tree stump taken for a large commercial Xmas tree. It was a Douglas fir before it was cut. In fact the forestry took around 100 large trees for Xmas last year. ?
  17. Thanks, as always, excellent summation DH ?. I had a go with 48g of 414 yesterday. Remember this is a brand new Xbolt, rifle, new picatinny rail and new QR rings. Zeroed at 50M with 3 rounds, and the picture is 4th, 5th & 6 rounds at 110M. I think I pulled a wee bit at the right shot ?. The squares are 1", so reasonably happy with first attempt.
  18. Thanks DH, I revised the info above to CIP spec, and yes you're correct, it's accuracy, however with that size of bullet, isn't speed going to help out to 200-300yds? I'm going to try a lower load and see how it goes.
  19. And with 43g of N140. Looks like a more efficient burn DH? At 49g of H414, which is much more than I'd start with, it's pushing the 180g bullet at 2660 fps, which is a bit more than 43g of N140.
  20. Found this helpful powder burn rate chart, interesting...
  21. Thanks, this is revised load using CIP criteria and using H414, i'll run it again with N140 with 43g. Also, found this on SAAMI V CIP; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_arms_ammunition_pressure_testing
  22. Thanks, I'll have a look. Weird that Lee reloading manual has max load @ 49g. I'll re-look at it and make sure all the parameters are correct. Cheers
  23. Thanks, the barrel is actually 22" & 1:12 twist with an Atec sound moderator. Understand the logic of using n140 or similar, but was going to try and use up the H414. If I needed to readjust when I need to get a compliant powder, than I'm not too bothered. I did intend starting low down and build it up after testing. I've loaded hundreds of .243, however you get too used to that calibres characteristics, hence my caution. I'm a few weeks away from trialling, still waitng on the scope and QR Mounts to arrive, Is H414 completely discounted? It's quoted for this calibre in th
