  1. Had another nice mooch up the cliffs today. Walked for miles ,saw no one and my bitch put up another rabbit and caught it. I though she done herself an injury though by running full pelt into a wire fence. It's a different type of fencing up her to what she's used to. Just 4 strand wire set up with posts about 3metre apart. It's very deceiving, looks like there is no fence at all until your right next to it. I really thought she had cut herself to pieces but she just bounced off it and then jumped it. Very pleased with her bit then again I'm pretty easily pleased nowadays just enjoy watching t
  2. Besides it's ideal for me. To be honest I'm not really a people person and would not bother me going months without talking to people. I'm pretty lucky my missus is the same,if your not a dog or a horse she don't talk to you lol
  3. I thought the same mate until I spent some time up here. The outer islands are too isolated for me ,populations of a couple hundred people and really cut off from everywhere. The mainland where i am is just fine for me. All the facilities of any small town but without all the people.
  4. It really is heaven up here mate. Only downside is no foxes for the bull x to retrieve so looks like he is unemployed now lolBe a few years until I'm up here full time ,once my boy has grown up I'll be up here. I'll tell you one thing though whatever dog you have up here has to have a good jacket ,the wind is unbelievable here. Perfect lampung weather all year round it seems
  5. Been doing a lot of walking this week and found some nice deserted places where there is plenty of game
  6. The deerhound is not phased by the heavy wind and rain but the bull x don't reckon it at all
  7. Had a nice walk up the cliffs this morning. The deerhound x caught a rabbit so well pleased
  8. Yeah it's totally different mate. To be honest I'm still finding my feet and working that out. From what I've seen some things are cheaper and some are really dear. My bills are cheaper but some food is expensive
  9. Yes I would imagine it could be bit tricky up here if you just came up to run game and take the piss. I'm going to be up here full time within the next couple of years so will take it steady. Hopefully get to know a few people and get a bit of rabbiting permission and take it from there. There is plenty of deserted places to have a walk though
  10. I'll take your word for it mate. Hopefully I'll never have to taste one. Had enough of them in London over the years
  11. Is that the view from your yard looking over that loch in your pics? I may have camped just up the road from your house when I was there in November if it is. Yes it is mate. My yard backs on to the loch. It's a RSPB reserve.Do you come to Orkney often?
  12. would it set a person back much? You can get a decent plot for between 120k and 200k depending on how much work it needs doing. That's on the mainland. The outer islands you get a lot more for you money
  13. Yes there is a Tesco and Lidl in Kirkwall . There is all the mod cons there. I'm in the west mainland, right out in the sticks
  14. What island that's mate? I'm on the mainland so got all the facilities but still everything I want. Them outer islands are proper isolated He owns some land on Sanday not a large area but it would have been enough to build a smallholding on I think he might eventually sell the land tbhI was looking on sanday at houses. You can get 30 odd acres and a run down house for about 100k. To isolated for me though. 500 people and one shop.
  15. What island that's mate? I'm on the mainland so got all the facilities but still everything I want. Them outer islands are proper isolated
  16. Put it this way mate. I brought 2 acres and a 3 bedroom stone farmhouse which backs onto a loch and a nature reserve for less than what I would pay for a shitty studio flat in London. It really is heaven up here but not everyone s cup of tea. It's wet and windy most of the time but if you like rural, isolated ,plenty of wildlife ,fresh food and a slower way of life this is the place to. Must admit the weather is pretty hardcore
  17. Yes it is lovely up here. It's in the middle of no where and plenty of wildlife Once my son has flown the nest me and the missus will be up here in a flash. I've got a few acres and nice stone farmhouse for the price of a garage in London . Going to be up at the crack of dawn and be walking the cliffs
  18. Sorry for the sideways photos ,always does that lol
  19. I'm spending a few weeks up my at my house in Orkney. Only been up here a few days and that's all it took to make me remember why I bought it. Had a couple of mooches with the dogs just enjoying the scenery. Great land ,sparsely populated and full of wildlife. Got loads of brown hares right on my doorstep and some of the best wildfowling shooting around. I'm hoping to see some otters soon but that's going to take some patience. Cannot wait for the day I can leave London and come here for good.
  20. I spend about a third of the year in Orkney, beautiful place. Haven't done much hunting there yet apart from daytime mooching. Going to be doing a bit when I'm up there in a couple of weeks. Big difference to where I spent the rest of the year on the outskirts of London
  21. I'm planning to spend the summer at my place in Orkney. Got a lot of exploring to do and find some places to run the dogs when I'm up there
  22. You know what's fellas,f**k it I'll post what I like about what I like. The mighty hunter brigade pissed me off a bit but oh well. It's quite amusing how people get so offended about what another man feeds and works. Any interested in the bitch progress I'll update as she sees some more ATB Hannibal
  23. As I have said a couple of times,I'm not saying this bitch is the new best busher on the planet. She is a young dog who was going to be PTS as the old boy who owned her is ill and did not have any one to take her on. She is a nice dog who is a good guard dog. She has slotted in nicely with my pack, keen to get involved with the others smashing about. Had her out a couple of times now and she is obedient, keen and it looks like she will earn her keep. No she may not be a purpose bred super fantastic hound like some of you fellas own but combined with my terrier she will do a job for the runners
  24. The bitch is doing just fine. She has settled right in with the family and my other dogs. She is a good watch dog to have knocking round the yard. Hunting wise she is very keen and seems to have teamed up with my lakeland and sticks to him like glue. Obviously she cannot get in the tight spots like he can but she is trying which is enough for me. She has pushed a couple of things out of the woods so so far so good. I've never claimed she will be the greatest busher in the world but you know what fellas that does not bother me. She seems keen to please me and I'm sure I'll have some fun with
  25. I'm getting on really well with her. The old boy that had her has obviously spent a lot of time with her as she is well socialized,I've took her everywhere with me. Seems like nothing bothers her. So far cars, bikes, kids and noise don't bother her. I had her over a little park this afternoon and her recall is good. All the pet walkers were out and their yapping little dogs did' t bother her. Going to build a good bond and she needs to loose some weight before any work commence but her general behaviour and obedience please me Cheers for your encouraging comments chaps
