  1. Thanks. Shes just over a year old now, starting to work above ground. I know what you mean about finding working beddies here-dont think shes bred worker to worker like some the other dogs in this thread, but there is some good stuff in her.
  2. nice looking dogs, what will you work them on? -best
  3. jesus you would need the patience of a saint with them... But was just out for a walk just now and she started trailing a fox, must have been recent cause she got a bit mental. Anyway she started quartering the field and kicked up a cat. She didnt look twice at it just kept her head down on the scent. So thanks for the advice lads. Its good to know there are some terriers that have different ways with cats and what not. But when i saw the cat run her off i thought it was bad. -and no she hasnt seen much just been in a couple scuffles above ground -to big now for anything else.
  4. in general, got chased by a cat last night....
  5. is there any chance she might toughen up a bit?
  6. My dream is to own a working deerhound some day. We have all sorts of game in the hills up here - it would be my ideal dog. Right now I have a terrier and a lurcher and thats me dogged up. But one day I will have one of those bad boys. good post.
  7. dont do that they are dirty fighters and will bring claw hammers to a fist fight
  8. A few years back I was in the country side there for a couple weeks. Nice weather - beer costs cents - also the women are beautiful. But to tell you the truth I was struck by the absence of wild life. Maybe it was just the area i was in, although it was very rural were i was.
  9. I used to see a lot of those black caterpillars on nettles as a kid but had forgotten about them. Is the parasite foreign?
  10. ok im a gobshite on this post. We only caught them by accidently when trout fishing, and were told from childhood they were dirty and not good to eat. Sorry i shouldnt have replied to the post. but i learned something. -kvn
  11. we used to catch them accidentally with worms with small hooks fishing for trout. The hook goes half way down them anyway, so maybe small hooks are better.
  12. hunting with primitive tools is the best, i like spearing fish with a home made spear.
  13. Theres a bit burning going on but its really smoky and the firedepartment comes . There was a big fire half the townland was covered in smoke, stuff burns like matches. A farmer told me when you burn it it only comes back worse. Maybe cause it grows faster than other stuff. Field beside me was cleared of hawthorn 2 years ago its half full of waist high gorse now. It spreads like a weed.
  14. How many hounds did you have/take out with you? The beagle or begle/x would be a good wee dog for it/wouldnt go to ground in the middle of it. I suppose its an advantage to something that bays in that situation.
  15. Gorse is reclaiming a lot of land around here, theres literally acres of it. And theres a lot of fox now as well. In a an area like this were a fox could run into a half an acre of gorse where a man could not go is it even possible to hunt with dogs? If dogs than what type would you use to get them out of the cover. You would not want a terrier to go to ground in there. I think youd need something tough with a good nose and not to big and youd need a pack of them. what do you all think?
  16. jrt. but in my humble opionion if its short or long legged wouldnt matter so much as long as its well build and keen.
  17. i built a similar one last year, not as tidy as that but a bit bigger. I had 6 hens that were all laying really well and free ranging. the only problem was that the hens developed a taste for dog food and one day my terrier snapped at one then he got a tasted for them and killed the lot. whats the easiest way to enclse a henhouse like that with chicken wire? how high does the wire need to go?
  18. yeah but dont just put in on frontline and think everythings going to be allright, if the dog swims it will come right off, and it takes 3days for the frontline to spread over the dogs skin, sometimes if its a thick coat of it shakes it off it doesnt even take - even if the vet puts it on. so you need to go at it with a few different methods.
  19. Thats some selection, where was that? Something like is that what i had in mind before the spoke idea. But some of those would be a bit big for the average flat fish.
  20. act fast, I bought a dog that was covered in them 2 years ago, its coat was so thick that i didnt notice until it was to late. Ive never been able to erradicate the problem since. Now i have to keep the dog pumped up on frontline or they come right back. Flea shampoo is a good place to start, the put it on frontline. I would use a fogger in the house as well if i were you. you have to take care of it right away or else youll be plagued for life.
  21. >>Try using sharpened bycycle spokes, they're made from hardened steel and will last for ever. fantastic, that will save me a lot of hasslle. >>When I was working in Mozambique the locals used to stab each other in the heart with them, not reccomended! I'll be damned, thats got to be one of the worst ways to die!
