9 month old lurcher

Recommended Posts

is there someone out there who can help me please , i have a 9 month old lurcher pup and i have started taking her out with a gun and dog pack to get her used to the hounds and gun, but on sunday the hounds started speaking and my lucher pulled off the lead and ran off but passed the hounds to meet a fox in the brook, but half an hour later the hounds spoke again but in a total different area and she ran behind us over the hill away from the hounds i dont understand why she done this as she is a real keen pup who is shaking rabbits and squirrels all the time.

my suggestion is that she isnt up for the job ?

I think this is just another wind up !! But anyone who lets a 9 month old Lurcher , accidently or otherwise, run with a Hound Pack, and then asks why it is running wild all over the land, has to be an idiot !! Give the pup to some one who has a bit sense before you ruin it completely !

Cheers.

cheers for the help, how are people meant to learn when there are wankers like you lot ?

Words almost failed me :icon_eek: but I'll try not to be a wanker: (actually I'd have a bit of a problem there :tongue2: :tongue2:  )

Unless you have intensively socialised your pup with lots of other dogs, taken her out all her life from being a small puppy, to as many different situations and places, let her mix with all sorts of dogs in groups, she will have been totally freaked out by the situation you put her in by taking her out with hounds. She is also at one of the most vulnerable ages as well: what we call the 'flight' period, where anything new is likely to cause terror and panic.

The best thing you can do now is take her to pet dog training classes: its a bit late, but better late than never. This way she can gain confidence around other dogs in a controlled situation. Also, take her to meet other dogs: if you live in town, then there must be a local park somewhere. If you don't have access to somewhere where there are lots of other dogs, then you'll just have to work a bit harder to find somewhere she can socialise with well behaved dogs: not easy in this day and age where so many dogs are out of control.

What you have done, by the sounds of it, is drop the pup into a situation that she can't handle, because she has had no experience like this before. This doesn't mean that she isn't up to the job at all, but you've obviously messed up by not getting her used to lots of canines making a racket. Go back to basics: and I'll say it again: take her to a pet dog training class.

Most important, don't get cross with her, be patient. You don't say what her breeding is, but many lurchers with Collie or Saluki in them are very sensitive to new sounds and situations, so you'll have to work extra hard now to get her used to new things, gently and patiently.
