Do I Need A Firearms Lisence To Do My DSC1?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys. My dad said I cannot get a firearms lisence until i am either 18 and own my own house or I have to pay to do my DSC1. I was reading up on doing my DSC1 (because I have more chance of then getting a firearms lisence ASAP becausei am 14 years old) and it says candidates need to be able to prove they are an accurate shot with a legal deer calibre rifle but to handle a rifle dont you need to have a firearms lisence so I was wondering do you need a firearms lisence to do your DSC1 or not? Many Thanks, Will.

Someones been misleading you

Its not a requirement in law for someone to have their DSC1 before granting a F.C to use a deer calibre rifle. You do need your parents consent though .

Neither is it a condition that you need to own your own house.

Depending were you live you may not even have to pay for doing the DSC1 if for instance you live in Scotland were you can apply for a grant subsidy but this only applies to residents.

There is a law which does state age before you can possess in the fire arms act.

Details of the criteria can be found on B.A.S.C Website.

You can still gain practical experience even though you dont hold a firearm certificate as in some circumstances you are allowed in law as long as you are accompanied to use whats classified as an estate rifle but as stated you do need to be accompanied.

.Please dont hesitate to contact me further should you require further advice.

Cheers

does the dsc1 or 2 cover handling of meat and preperation or the table, or i that a complettely different course?

does the dsc1 or 2 cover handling of meat and preperation or the table, or i that a complettely different course?

No not preparing food for the table.

It provides a standard that a trained hunter examines a carcass and declares its fit to be interred into the food chain at a game dealing /handling establishment.

Its then examined further by local government meat inspectors before it reaches its final outlet and destination.

so do you have to do both courses to sell what ever you have spare to the gamedealer?

No doing the DSC1 gives you the qualification to sell large game to a Game Dealer its included.

there is other ways of doing this.

If you only wish to supply game to a game dealer B.A.S.C can organise it for you through the LANTRA scheme

You can get qualified in both Certificate for Large game and Also Certificate for small game

A pheasant shoot who puts shot birds into a game dealer must have a person who is qualified to place then into the food chain.

More details of the LANTRA qualifications can be obtain from the B.A.S.C website

Hope this Helps

Capreolus, not quite correct I'm afraid.

You have to be 17 before you can take advantage of the "estate rifle" clause.

For a 14 year old to fire a rifle they would either need to have it on their own FAC, or be using the weapon at a HO approved range. Most DSC courses use ranges which are not HO approved, so William, you wouldn't be able to complete the shooting part of the DSC. There's no reason you couldn't get your own FAC though, DSC is not required for an FAC, but you would need to get your parents to OK it first. Does your dad have an FAC?

Your best bet is to contact some of the course providers. BASC are generally pretty helpful and will be able to tell you if any of their providers can take you. Also Jelen on here might be able to help you, drop them a pm on here.

Looking to be able to do some revision and learning in the process by going through the DSC1 question bank. Although the questions are at http://www.dmq.org.uk/downloads/DSC1%20Wri...uestions%20.pdf, I can't find the answers anywhere so I'm not much further ahead. Does anyone have them/know where they are?

      TIA
