ive never had much to do with fire arms up untill now as ive always stuck with my air rifle, then the other day i got chatting to a chap while i was waiting for a bus and it turns out he used to shoot over whats now my permission years ago and that he has permission on the horse padocks that border onto it!

the upshot of our conversation was that we decided to do a bit of shoot sharing!

any how got a phone call this morning "rabbits tonight, ill pick you up at six and you wont need the air rifle ill let you have a go with the .17hmr"

by half six were on justins ground, a large area of horse padocks and grass land, we got set up in a gate way over looking a hedge line with plenty of bunnys out and about, justin knelt in the gate way got the rifle on the extended bipod loaded the first round taken aim and.........

WHOP! dead rabbit, cycle the bolt, WHOP! number two, cycle the bolt, WHOP! number three is down and there are still plenty of hampster size bunnies sitting around like nothing was going on!, WTF if that was my air rifle they all would have run for it at the first shot and its not even half as noisy as the .17!

"come on then we'll leave the little ones to grow up and head up to the next field and you can shoot the next one"

pretty soon im sat by the fence in the next field and getting ready to line up on my first rabbit by the hedge eighty yards away, "nothing to it" says justin "so long as its got grass behind it and its safe, just put the cross hair on its head and pull the trigger"

so thats what i did! WHOP! wow! cycle the bolt and WHOP! one at seventy yards! double wow!

we moved up the fence line and both accounted for some more bunnies then justin decided it was time for me to try for a longer range shot!

we crossed over a bank and under yet another electric fence into a long triangular field where the ground slopes away steaply with a huge pile of horse poo in the bottom corner!

handing me the rifle justin pointed out a rabbit right at the bottom of the field "same as you did before, get comfortable and take your time but if you dont hit it in the head your not getting another go"

so i got settled and just sat there for a few minutes watching the rabbit through the scope and getting my breathing right, then as soon as i felt right flicked the safety forward and settled the crosshairs at the base of the rabbits ears, let half a breath out and gently squeezed the trigger and......

WHOP! whatched through the scope as my rabbit did a kind of half jump and flop to the side!

im sat there with my mouth hanging open :o and justins looking at me with a huge grin on his face "go and pace it out then" so off i go still shaking my head and muttering to my self!

by the time i got to my rabbit id counted one hundred and thirty eight good long paces, now to me, some one who is normally used to shooting rabbits at 35 yards or less, thats a staggering distance to take a shot at and it left me utterly gobbsmacked and totaly buzzing!

we carried on round the farm and accounted for eighteen rabbits in total before we called it a night as the light was fading, including anther rabbit that we paced out at 115 yards, and i missed one bunny that i later paced out the distance to at 238 yards, the bullet dead on line but falling about five inches short!

all in all ive it was an amazing evenings sport, the reaction of the rabbits even at close range was surreal to me! CRACK! WHOP! and the rabbit sat next to the one thats just been shot just sticks its head up to look what the noise was!

and the rifle its self, the recoil is so tiny and so fast and smooth you hardly feel it making the follow through dead easy, its lighter than my air rifle and cheaper too (though i dare say the cost of the amunition would balance that out over a couple of yars use), and the range you can use it at is knocking on for four times greater than that of an air gun!

i never thought i needed to go down the F.A.C route because ive always thought it would be like buying a J.C.B to dig the flower bed, to much tool for the job i needed to do!

ive really enjoyed being proven wrong!

cheers for reading

Nice write up mate, was a good read...

I love the .17 they are great tool for the long shots of 200 yards or so, we often take it out along with the .22lr just for those long distance ones. But the bunnies do very quickly learn the sound of the .17hmr, so for the rabbits of 120 yards and closer we use the .22 with subs, as its much stealthier.

Also excellent for the wiser crows aswell!

cheers

there is a certain family of magpies on my patch that have so far escaped or evaded every tactic ive thrown at them with the air rifle that i can see being introduced to justin and his .17hmr pretty soon!

justin was saying that he has'nt been out with his shotgun for ages so to return the favour ive invited him crow shooting on monday!, ill try and remember to take the camera this time!

The .17 is a cracking little Calibre for those long range Varmints, the Magpies won't stand a chance :)

Don't wait, get the forms done now, ready to send off, they take a good while to get all the components together
