New to lurchers

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I'm keen to look for a lurcher for rabbiting. I live in the fens so its very flat. Im only 19 but have been shooting and the like for years (being a country boy :-) ) what should i look for in a lurcher puppy? Also what are they like to train? Will they retrieve a kill to hand? basically i would just like some advice from some one more expereinced than myself.

Thats a big queation or at least a lot.

1st rabbiting lurchers? nimble and quick so a 3/4 sight hound rather than a first cross is worth thinking about, breeding to what you like ie beddy, collie etc with perhaps some whippet or even a pure whippet or whippet greyhound, saluki the options are unending.

2nd training will in part depend on what cross you go for ie collie might be easier than bull or pure.

3rd live to hand? probably if trained properly and then not spoilt.

On the fens I'd go for a smallish saluki hybred in case they overturn the ban.

Good luck s

Hello there mate

It sounds like you would be wanting a collie/Greyhound or something along them lines!

They are easy to train and yes with patience and good training they will bring back and put it in your hand! You'll have years of fun and learn alot! Maybe read some books before you pic a pup!

What are the benefits of a saluki hybrid? I'm thinking a collie x might be good for me because its got to be trainable, obedient and versatile.

Can you recommend any good books? Would a whippet x beddlington be any good for rabbits? Thanks for the replys

The new complete lurcher by Brian Plummer!

It tells you about all the different crosses etc.

Hes a big Collie x fan.

The Whippet cross is good but you can be a little restricted as to the quarry you run.For rabbits yes but there quite small!
