Malt 379
Always been a .22 man myself, and I've never seen a maggie duck either! I've been tempted to switch to .177, but then on the other hand I was out shooting with a mate and his .177 raider a few weeks back. Now on both nights my mate hit a rabbit about a 1/4 of an inch too low, and hit it in the jaw. Those rabbits then got up and had to be caught by the lurcher, whereas I've seen rabbits hit in the same place with a .22 and be killed outright. We all know that .177 or .22 will kill cleanly, but I reckon you've got ever so slightly more margin for error with the .22. But then we're only talking fractions. Quote Link to post
Freddy Watts 1
Totally agree with that Mal. I think if you are accurate enough either will do. .22 more margin for error and I am sure the .177 shooters will tell you that the .177 give better accuracy due to the flatter trajectory. So I think the conclusion can only be personal preference. Anyone else with thoughts? ATB Freddy Quote Link to post
Guest Scuba1
I was in the same dilemma when I got my aa410. I wanted to buy a .177 as I have had the last gun in that calibre over 20 years ago and could not remember much about it. All others I have had since then where .22 and I got used to that. so when I was in the shop, I chickened out in the last minute and went home with a .22 again. One day may be ATB Michael Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Can't say I've had any problems with ducking quarry, also never had any problems with .22 for hunting smaller stuff, but I do prefer .177 for paper punching at distance. Quote Link to post
8shot 192
Ive shot with both .177 and .22 never really had a problem with a .177 not killing anything. Infact i found the .177 alot easier to shoot accurately so my kill rate was better. I like using .177 for fur and .22 for feather. The complete opposite of the old saying. pocus your right .177 for fur .22 for feather altho i did have a .25 which was brilliant for pigeons Quote Link to post

With the added weight of the pellet in them they drop to the ground like a brick no matter how hard they flap there wings and break there necks when they hit the deck. :whistling: ATB Michael Quote Link to post
Guest buster321c
Killed 20, took home 9 and left 3. I make that a 8/20 or 40% wounding rate. That isn't very impressive. Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
It's funny how we all try to shoot little bits of lead at stuff and get such different results! I gave up on .22 years ago 'cos of one too many runners. I still use it for close range ratting etc, and find it's great for that, but when the range gets past 25 yards or so I have little faith in it being able to penatrate well enough. .177 pellets are strange little things though. If they are too light (less than 8.5ish grains) while they may fly fast, they also slow down fast and lose their down-range energy very quickly. I've been using Bisley Mags for a long time until recently, and I can't recomend them highly enough. Fly fast and keep their energy very well. I've been trying .20 for the first time in recent months, and so far I'm well pleased. H and N Barracudas and Dynamic SPC 5 pellets getting the nod from me so far. Not quite as flat shooting as .177, but much flatter than .22. Both hit bloody hard and penatrate very well! Cheers. Andy. Edited April 28, 2009 by andyfr1968 Quote Link to post

andyfr1968 772
All the ones I can get! Bisley Suprefield and Pest Control, Loguns, Crosman Premiers, Benjamin Air Bullets, and the Dynamics and Baracudas. My HW's barrel does not seem to like the Bisleys. The Loguns, Crosmans and Benjamins are all .22 weight and while they fly well, they have the same kind of tragectory as .22s so there's no gain there. The Crosmans are very accurate though! The Baracudas and Dynamics really work well, flying faster than .22 and grouping to an inch at 40 yards. The Dynamics in paticular fly very well and at 12 grains fly nearly as flat as the .177 Mags I'm used to. Cheers. Quote Link to post
