Introducing Dogs to Ferrets

Recommended Posts

I'm just in the process of buying a Lurcher pup and I remember being told that you're best introducing dogs to ferrets and vice versa when they're young. All I want to know really is that is this right and has anyone got any tips on doing it? Is it as easy as just handling the ferret with the pup sat next to you? I know this might be a daft question but I had a look through the FAQ's and didn't see any mention of it.

Cheers for any advice

In my experience your right. old dog new tricks and all that. what i have done in the past is as youv'e said handle the ferrt with the dog there and bollock/encourage accordingly if the pup gets too involved. you won't have any probs i shouldn't think as the dog will be growing up with them there

i let my pup sniff them then kept an eye on her and the stinkers when running around the garden she got a few nips that soon sorted her but still gets a bit excited now and then but a quick shout at her and she calms down or a nip but stinkers get told if they nip her too :clapper:

My lurchers are fine with them but i dont trust the terrier. i got him at a year old though so he didnt have the same interaction with them when he was a puppy. He knows he shouldnt but you can see he would like to  !

I got my pup at 19 weeks and i thought it would be a little too late for her learn to be with the ferrets so i just let her around the cage/run for an hour a day to see how she reacted and she seemed fine around them, then i opened the lid to the run and let the ferrets run around above her eye level on the roof to their sleeping compartment and she was fine again, Just slowly let her have more time and more interaction with them and i feel she is fine with them now. She is 28 weeks and they are all eating and drinking out of the same dishes. I would never leave her alone with them though.
