Pembshunter 23
After my huge dog adventures which I posted about...I have ended up with a 2 year old dog, trained! Thanks to a member of this site who wishes to remain nameless....I have been given a dog that is lamping, ferreting, and everything else in between! Shes only been here 1 week, I havent let him off the lead yet, but I really dont think he will be any trouble anyway....Although it isnt the season, Im keen to take the little lad lamping a night, But Im bloody nervous of him running off after a rabbit and loosing him! I havent ever lamped with own dog and Im very keen to try...everyone has to begin somewhere, Has anyone any tips? Edited March 31, 2009 by Pembshunter Quote Link to post
Malt 379
I'd make the dogs recall a priority. You & the dog are still new to each other, and the first thing that needs sorting out is the pecking order between you and the dog. If the dog has been trained, then it's just a matter of you establishing yourself as the dogs boss. You have to make sure that no matter what, the dog will come back to you when you call it. Try doing it in your garden or your house first off the lead, and keep at it until it comes every time you call it. Quote Link to post
ferreter.al 22
exciting stuff having a new dog,im desperate for one for this season but cocker pups on the way and limited space, like everyone else says....maybe spend a little bit more time bonding and training first before a nitetime outing.best of luck Quote Link to post
Guest jt750
I'm pretty much in the same boat ..had mine 2 and half weeks ..first few times she was fine off the lead ..now all she wants to do is hunt up and has no recall at all ..take it slowly and see what happens ..i'd forget lamping ..walk your land thro the day on the lead then if it does disappear it might find its way back ..Just take it slowly mate small steps now big inroads at the new season start Quote Link to post
