logun 91
hi all. just got my fac aplication in front of me,i need a rifle, but what one ?.first off i aint a gun man to be honest, got shotguns but thats as far as it goes. first off i aint shooting fox,i would never do that but crows play hell on the farms i hunt all the time with lambs and crops getting slambed every year. crows at long range will be the target, thought about a hmr,but told wind can play hell with this calibre, and my farms are so close to the moon wind is a problem all year round.just need a tool that can take them out in all weather conditions really. cost is a big factor to,but results are needed also. would a centre fire be better than a rim and what calibre woul you all recomend. thanks. aaronpigeonplucker 32
if its only corvids then an fac air rifle will be fine. most of them are not as expensive as centrefires or rimmys anyway. Quote Link to post
the Verminator 0
hi, for your use i would have recommended a .17hmr untill you mentioned lots of wind. i would go for either a .22-250 or a .223. they you do the job well. Quote Link to post
kevegg 0
You can easily pick up a rim fire .22 for a lot less than you will pay for a decent PCP F.A.C.air rifle. Kev. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
FAC Air for anything more than 60 yards will be a waste of money, especially in the wind. The main contenders for that type of shooting would be the .17HMR and the .22WMR. The wind does play a big part in longer range shooting with the HMR, but for anything to 150 yards, little correction is needed in all honesty. The WMR is a good calibre from what I'm told and hear, though I have never shot one. The bullet is certainly heavier and will buck the wind better. Your trajectory will not be as flat as with the HMR though. If you know someone with either then give them a go. A centrefire will cost you a lot if you are shooting fairly large numbers of Pest birds. I don't know what being closer to the Moon does to the wind SS Quote Link to post
woz 260
if its only corvids then an fac air rifle will be fine. most of them are not as expensive as centrefires or rimmys anyway. your cheapest option is a hmr should get a good second hand rifle, mod and scope for £300......amo costs me £8.75 per 50 you will be able to shoot out to 180 yards easily and if its blowing a gale bring your range down to 70 yards ish......fac air rifles are all expensive you would struggle to get a rubbish rifle for £300/400 the only thing theyve got going for them is amo is cheap......hmr will do you well Quote Link to post
logun 91
my land have got strong wind even in the summer,ok wmr sounds ok but could be shooting over 150 yards. every crow on these places could say 15 or so lambs, air guns no good here.just long range crow shooting. Quote Link to post

Thing with WMR is the apparent lack of Rifles and Ammunition selection, something to bear in mind Quote Link to post

HMR mate - wind is not that much of an issue, been shooting my CZ452 with hornady v-max ammo for 5 months and little adjustment for the wind is needed to 120-140 yds, and after practice, 1/2 inch groups at 100 are so so easy, and 1.5 inch groups at 150yds again, easy-ish. ammo is pricey but well worth it cz452 £280-£325 16''/24'' barrel / thin or heavy barrel SAK Moderator £30 - £40 scope £???? i'm using a BSA essential 6-25x50 AO - perfect at £100 bi-pod £50-£100 sling - £15 + slip - £10 + All the best ammo, £8.50 (ish) per box of 50 Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
If you are seriously suggesting you have to take these corvids commonly in excess of 150 yards in lots of wind then you will need a lot of practice and a rangefinder if you use a HMR or WMR. Sounds to me as though you are describing a .204, ammo is expensive but easy shooting at 150+++++++yards. .223 is very capable and a lot of ammo choice, 22-250 seems a bit over the top to me! Deker 3,478
...and the vast majority of hunting rimfires and loads of centrefires are cheaper than many PCP air rifles!! Quote Link to post
karlp86 0
i agree with deker. the .204 will probably be the best rifle for the job, that is if it is not possible to use decoys and your shotgun to get the crows. atb karl Quote Link to post
woz 260
150 yards minimum????????? maybe 17 hmr and alot of practice on the old but somtimes forgoton field craft?????...... Quote Link to post
