Barrel length

Recommended Posts

Im going to look at a SBS 12bore tomorrow with 1/4 & 3/4 choke. with 26" barrels.

i was wondering if these days barrel length really matters to range, i do most of my shoot at a far distance, often around 35yrds +. i will be my new main gun moving up from a twenty so thats anything from woodcock to geese to the occaisionaly fox.

would be much appreiated for any info im in bit of a rush to find out.

26 inch or 28 inch will be perfect

The choke sizes are ok but I feel 26 is short!

I used to have a 26 and considered it my Skeet Gun..which would hardly equate to a long range hunter!

Don't see any great issues but I would have put 28 as a MINIMUM first choice for your listed requirements......... i do most of my shoot at a far distance, often around 35yrds +. i will be my new main gun moving up from a twenty so thats anything from woodcock to geese to the occaisionaly fox.:thumbs:

Would the 2" really make much difference. and would we be talking in pattern rather than range. also what choke would you recommend, i currently shoot cylinder, 1/4 in my twenty, and bring down my fair share.

It also to do with swing and momentum of the gun in motion for longer range shots.

If you have a bit more weight in front, you can rely on keeping the gun swinging that bit longer when you pull the trigger.

If you have a shorter barrell, it is more suited to snap shot, and quick reaction shooting, such as skeet, where, move , mount shoot has to be undertaken in a very swift, single movement, and you will track the target, overtake it and shoot it.

Maybe someone can put that in english for you.

My own preference is for a 28" multi choke, which covers everything for me except trap shooting, which is a rare outing for me.

Range

Range will be next to no different with 26 or 32 inch barrels...the more correct phrase is effective range...choke size and barrel length all effect this (as well as the cartridge), so, in effect pattern is range!

A tighter pattern will give you a longer effective range, therefore, long barrel and tight choke increase effective range. Short barrel and wide choke give you a shorter effective range!

Shotgun use

mattydski has helped to explain that pretty well I'd say!!
