Woke early this morning ,approx'2.30am so i decided on a trip out to one of my furthest permissions .Its about 30 miles away so a leasurely drive to it meant i arrived at 3.15am .As i got near it ,i was very surprised to see the snow was still on the ground as we have none left where i live .The fields were like daylight even at this hour so i decided to risk it and not take the lamp .The moon is a good 3/4 at the moment and that addad to the light no end ,yes it was very light in fact .I crunched my way to where a gate divides 2 huge fields and sat in the hedge beside it .Allowed a few minutes for the breathing to settle and then started a calling sequence .I like to really get out there with the first call and a good job i did as it was quite a while before anything showed .I saw the fox well out to my left running from left to right and appearing to be ignoring the squeak all together but i knew better .He stopped just slightly out of my full view ,behind a few wisps of hedge stuck out and then he put his nose down and zig zagged towards me ,still about 150 yds out ,thats how light it was mind .I looked at him in the scope and decided to get him closer .I gave a few quieter squeaks and and to my surprise he was joined by another from the left ,out of my view until now .It appeared that they didnt know each other as each was wary of the other .Anyway i squeaked again softly and readied the rifle ,the .222 today .The second fox was a bit bigger than the first and trotted straight towards me but in no hurry whilst the other stayed put .I should have let him come but i squeaked again and he started running in like a dog ,i suppose he got his bearings on the sound .It wasnt long before he was within 70 yds and still running so i barked .He stopped and the other one came in just as fast behind him .I took the first one in the chest and hoped to get the second but he veered off and ran through the hedge only 20 yds to my left ,appearing on the other side doing about 90 mph with his tail like a bog brush and zig zagging a good un .No point in shouting that one as there was no way he was stopping .The shot fox never moved so i called some more .A hare came to within 15 yds and i should of got a pic but never gave it a thought .Nothing else showed up so i made a move for home .Got back in bed at just gone 7 with the wife none the wiser :clapper:
