StewartBell29 0
Hello folks, I’ve been a member of this site for a while but not posted anything as yet. So I thought I would tell you all about how I nearly lost a ferret a couple of weekends ago. Me and my mate were out working a bit of new ground we found. It was quite a large set so we netted as many holes as we could find, let it rest for a bit then put 2 of our albino jills down there. It wasn't long before we spotted a couple of bunnies bolting out of some holes we never noticed (amateurs), anyway my mate climbed up the banking to see where they bolted and I stayed to watch the set. One of our jills came out of a hole and started to wander about the banking, I usually just let her do her thing as she normally scurries off down another hole pretty quickly. As I was standing there I noticed a shadow/movement above me, I looked up to see a Buzzard swooping down towards the ferret. Just as it got close it must have seen me cos it made a quick retreat away from both of us. I don’t know if anyone else has ever had anything similar happen to them? Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Nothing like that yet, suppose one of those could do some damage to a jill with the talons! Quote Link to post
ferretville 69
Buzzards normally feed on carrion and small mamals ,plus they don`t have huge talons like many would think unlike a harris hawk . Maybe curiosity got the better of it . Quote Link to post
StewartBell29 0
Probably was just being curious, it was cool to see a Buzzard that close thoough!! Quote Link to post

ellir0305 9
Worth the scare just to see the buzzard. theres fecking loads of them round here but i have flown both harris hawks and buzzards doing falconry and the buzzards are less equipt ie small talons and really quite lazy so it was probably curious cool to see them try and hunt but not your prized ferret lol Quote Link to post

Ginette 0
I'd keep a watch. The buzzards round our way have fair bred and they're bloody everywhere. Thing is they will and have taken hens round our way, do you think they'll say no to a ferret? Well maybe if it bites, but how much of a chance would it have. Quote Link to post
postiepaul 0
had a buzzard strike at a pigeon decoy last summer with a fair old thump, then sat on ground beside it looking puzzled. have had the same with peregrine a few years ago but that one soon made off after the mistake. I think a buzzard is capable of serious damage to a ferret because they strike hard and large rats and occasionally a stoat would be prey items and a ferret, a dark one, could be of similar size. The one 8,592
Seen buzzards eating worms and baby rabbits and theres so many of them that they seem to be on every post on the motorway lokking for roadkill but i didn't think they would take a ferret Quote Link to post
StewartBell29 0
The Buzzard was probably just curious but it looked like it was going for the ferret at the time! Surely if a buzzard was hungry enough or if it seen an easy meal it would take the opportunity. After all, i thought birds of prey conserved energy as much as possible? Quote Link to post
