Advice required to introduce a newbie.

Recommended Posts

My 2nd cousin is going to be coming down from Bromley to stay with us for a few days and wants to try his hand at some fieldsports. Both my wife and his mum (my cousin) are expecting me to take him out, but my problem is my naivety when it comes to city kids! He's never seen anything die, let alone killed anything himself!

Is it best to just throw him in at the deep end with gun safety and then get him shooting bunnies or take him lamping first? (as the dog brings them back dead) is it best to let him watch other people doing it first perhaps?

He seems keen enough, but I don't think he quite undertands whats involved?

I'm just nervous of ruining his expectations and spoiling it for him.

Anyone started a young city kid off (he's 10yrs) or was the newbie city kid!

Any advice apprieciated!

Cheers

Luke.

Does he want to do it? If he does then fire away (excuse the pun, lol), but if he's nervous about it or dosn't want to kill anything, then I wouldn't make him. I didn't like any animal dying when I was younger, and if he is going to be a hunter, he will develop in his own time.

I think the main thing you must do is teach him to have respect for the land and everything on it.

Good luck!

I have twins at 9, they get more opportunities than most to experience field sports.

We have ferrets, shotguns, rifles, air rifles and a shed which doubles as a butchery/larder.

One loves it one loathes it.

It is not evident, because its normal that they both want to spend time with their dad doing what dad does.

Until you find one in tears because you show him how to gut a rabbit, and it happens to be pregnant. For the next 6 months you get, 'do you have to shoot the mummies and babies?' In the middle of a car journey, you get 'Dad look deer'....then 'do we have to kill them?'

So just be sure he wants to, and is not just saying so to please you..

I hope he enjoys it...but gently, is my advice.

Bit of target practise with an airgun is a good introduction.

Thank you all, he definately seemed up for it, but as you say it might be he just doesn't to disapoint his mum (or me I suppose?)

I was thinking of starting him on the airrifle just with Targets to start and see how he finds it?

This all came about because the dog accidentally caught a duck and two pigeons :icon_redface: on an early morning walk round Crystal Palace Park when we were visiting them for New Years eve. Then he wanted to go out with the dogs. I explained that they were hunting dogs and what they could do to feed us and he seemed keen as Mustard. Next thing I know a week later, his mum's on the phone asking can he come down and stay with us and can I take him out shooting etc.

Thanks again

Luke
