Squirrel_Basher 17,102
not with a head full of antlers anyway lol i thought our game was hard, ive often wondered about those reds, they have a rack on them dont they Several years ago I owned a cracking lurcher,grey/collie to a whippet/lakeland.She was mustard on the roe but hadnt seen any bigger deer until one night I picked out a fallow buck and doe ,feeding alongside a river.I was up on a bank overlooking this and decided the time was right for her introduction.Slipped the dog and was concerned to see the buck stand its ground and thrash its antlers .The doe was off but the dog decided the buck was her target. We were a bit near a private estate  and so rather than let the dog make any noise ,I decided to lend a hand there and then .I was beside the pair by now and the buck turned to face me long enough for the lurcher to move in for a hold.Whilst the deer was held I took the opportunity to grab the antlers. The buck hadnt been run so was still very fresh and boy was he fresh. What seemed like ages ,we span round and round untill we all ended up in the river.Luckily the water wasnt deep but the silt was .The dog lost her grip in the fall but now had hold the bucks ear and in range of the antler thrashes.Luckily the deers hooves were firmly down in the silt. With the dog steadying one side I was able to get the knife from its pouch and end it .A long ,cold walk to the truck but worth every minute.Antlers are still on the wall but the venison long gone.
