brookie 1,193
ive kept lurchers all my life and they are working dogs. i personally would not or have i ever put a dog in the show ring for some one whos probably not done ten mins work with a dog cast judgement on one of my animals years ago there was strains and types all over the country and they were genuine proven working class dogs generations of worker to worker. then the show scene took of and every one had a lurcher and every one was an expert crossing any heap of rubbish they could get theyre hands on. portraying them as lurchers when to be perfectly honest a lot of em couldnt catch a rabbit in a phone box and worse still breeding from them and flooding the country with this sub standard excuse for lurchers . when i see adverts today saying its rotty cross or golden retriever cross etc by some one whos not had dogs 12mths and trying to put them over as lurchers and portraying them selves as experts . and then come the summer trotting them around the showring for some one as equally as dull as them to stand in the middle of the showring and award it a rossette and acclaim it a champion. a champion at what. i say the champions are the ones walking of the land with three winter hares to his credit or coming of the land early hours with 25 rabbits to his credit not some silly twat with a three quarter barbour and matching hat parading around with a rossette clipped to the collar thinking theyve got a lurcher Quote Link to post

brock1 2
i only go to show these day if i whant to buy a new coller or something for the dogs. becouse my own dogs dont do much work these day but still see a bit. 8 out of 10 you see at the show only have perfect feet & good coats becouse they have never been of a lead or ran on a field full of sh*t. they pay for there dog food with good looks & breeding hansome pups there just as bad as the kennel club pupy breeder in my eyes. to call them working dog shows is a joke if you take a good working dog with a few marks to them half the people there look at you as if they were the rspca & you were some kind of animal abuser. just becouse your dog has a knocked up toe & a few working scars shows dont make working dogs welcome these day & i wouldnt take anything othere than a pup that has never seen work. its like walking around a kennel club show with a working dog you just wouldnt do it half the time you see the rspca walking around while your there. I have never experienced this attitude at any of the shows ive been to but if i did it would put me off showing my working lurchers. I remember a while back putting my lab in a show, in the sporting dog class, a rabbit ran across the ring and hid in a pile of logs, my lab nion towed me across the ring on my face but i did notice the other dogs didnt move, standing square and waiting expectantly looking at their owner! There are breeders out there, be it kc or lurcher, that breed for all aspects of the dog with the emphasis on working but not forgetting the whole picture Quote Link to post

wild rover 548
nlrc shows do not do bull x classes i can assure you I judged the NLRC bull x class at Foxhall Inn, near Scotch Corner about 3 years ago, have they stopped them. Quote Link to post
scent 509
personally sickens me shit to see little fuzzy terriers that have never seen a green field not to mention a hole entering a working dog show. Quote Link to post
Guest oldskool
me and the mrs went to a show a few years back... i decided to let my dog have a crack at this racing carry on... i thought it would be a laugh and i thought that that would be everyones general attitude... anyway, all they had was a feckin yellow plastic bag as a lure... when the dogs took off mine only ran because the rest of them were running and when she got up front she fought a bit with the other dog... she won regardless and at the end of it when i got my prize this tosser came over with an angry head and said "that f****n thing needs a muzzle mate"... i said " FUCKSAKE RELAX MATE, ITS f****n BAG OF DOG MEAL"!!! you would have thought that the race was for a 100 grand with his attitude.. i never bothered much with the terrier and lurcher shows after that... although i think there good for socialising a pup Quote Link to post
jolong 1
last year in a local dog show a woman turned up in a jeep with about 7 different dogs.. lurchers/whippets... all in mint condition and she had a dog for nearly every class going.... she had something with every dog as in 1st/2nd/3rd... had top of the range collars leads..... all looked brand new... this was a WORKING DOG show.. but i don't thing she had one working dog... she come second in best in show and lost out to a WORKING lurcher... thank f**K all the best Quote Link to post

whin 463
dont worry mate therell maybe some real lurcher guys who do abit and no alot more than some judging a few shows so there will be am honest opion then ,maybe the show people will cry but it will be a good dog that gets picked and one who can do a job not muscle bound dogs but dogs that are a stamp for doing what they are bred for but , maybe not the show goers favorite Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
Shows have as much connection with working dogs as fish have with aeroplanes I have seen and owned some real racy, athletic and handsome looking dogs that were not up to scratch in the working field. Perhaps I just have high standards? Im not very interested in what the dog looks like, in fact thats an understatement I couldnt give a jot, as long as it does its job in the field where it counts, great post brookie nodding in agreement with every word you post a lot of sense Edited January 4, 2009 by SJM Quote Link to post
