I don't celebrate it (tho' my parents used to), even though I'm a Christian. Thursday will be spent like most other days - with the family around the fire, a few games of ludo etc, read a good book, and a walk, weather permitting. No Xmas tree, big dinner, decorations, carols, presents etc.

It's very unlikely that Christ was born in the Winter - Mary and Joseph were going with many others to be taxed, which was a long journey for multitudes, and it's unlikely that the Roman officials would have organized such a taxation at such an inclement time of year. Shepherds were also in the fields at night time, again most unlikely in Winter-time.

It's a pagan festival that has nothing to do with the birth of Christ, and everything to do with commercialism!

Guess who works in a department store selling lots of toys and decorations - Ironic!

Zek.

Recent research suggests that they got the year wrong too.

The proximity of 'Christmas' to the shortest day suggests to me it was a festival to cheer people up in the depths of winter. The days are (slowly at first) getting longer now. I'll be able to go fishing, and ride to work without freezing my nuts orf. :boogie:

cheer up folks Christmas is just what you make of it, managed to get this through the door, so roll on I say :drink: I'll do what I do every other day of the year, out with the animals and chill then with a few more sarnies and a bit more booze than the other 364 days

You don't have to get ripped off or go over the top if you're wise enough to ignore the hype

The reason xmas is when it is is because it was put near a pagan festival, the winter solstice that was allready being celebrated as the shortest day.Same as easter, spring equinox and i'm sure there's other christian festivals that fit in with older allready celibrated festivals. The reason for this is an easier change over from pagan to christian festivals for the general public so to speak when the chirstrian take over started.Bloody xmas tree lights have gone a b*ll*ck tonite as well :realmad: :realmad: .

Also it was the time of year when the excess or weak livestock that could'nt be fed through until spring were slaughtered .Hence feast time! Yep hijacked by Christians .Easter was the same. The old festival of rebirth ,homage to the spring fertility godess and the sprightly and mystic hare. Christians decided that it was an ideal time to slip in the story of Jesus' rebirth (resurrection) so like it or not the peasants started celebrating Christian icons and the poor old godess Eostre became represented by a choclate egg and the wonderous pagan spirit of the hare became a laughable Easter Bunny.

Its ok though because it really does all mean that non-Christians can celebrate and feast and hunt over the holiday with a clear concience knowing that their activities are actually based on far older traditions than the birth of Christ.
