Terrier

Was hoping to get a terrier pup in the near future. Mainly for rabbits but hopefully some rats aswell. It will be kept in the house as a family pet also. I liked the look of patterdale terriers and no someone who is breeding his soon... good worker etc. I spoke to him lately showing interest but he thinks it would not be the dog for me. He said they are hard work to train and more of a fox dog (pre ban of course). His suggestion was a border terrier. Just wondered what your thoughts are? Any replies would be appreciated.

I have a soft spot for Jack Russell's we had them for over twenty years and i found them a versatile breed for ferreting shooting and fox work .But each to there own everybody has there own prefered breed

Thats a pic of my LakelandXBorder terrier, a very good bushing and ferreting dog. Easy to train, infact she picked it up herself, she flushes pheasant and rabbits and is a very good marker for rabbits to, i am going to have a litter out of her but not for at least 5 months

if you want it for bolters and rats id say bedlington terrier

Do like the look of that dog and does pretty much what im looking for. its mainly marking and bushing im after in the rabbiting side of things but a dog that could catch bolters would be a bonus (been told im not aloud a lurcher, still live with parents). didnt think bedlington terriers were fast enough to catch bolting rabbits... learn something new every day. A good terrier can be a asset when ferreting, I use mine to run rabbits into the long net, mark and hold. She's a Russell X Lakeland.

If it's never going to be used for fox, then a terrier which is a little more placid can be an asset. The sight of seeing a terrier running off over hill and dale yapping after a rabbit, then the next, then the next can be a bit of a bind!

I think most russell's not even workers, when brought up in the right enviroment will take to what you want one for.

(start them as early as possible, it stops them from running rabbits they stand no chance at!)
