Frozen North.

Right, been offline since Sunday morning, seems like ages. After several calls to India, i have finally got back online just an hour or so ago, so Sunday's work is now here.

 

Got up into the hills once again, to find the snow from the previous Friday that had melted, had been replaced by another couple of inches. It was a great novelty to start with, but three weeks of it and around 6 days out, it has lost it's appeal!

 

Allthough, a few interesting prints along the way!

 

 

 

And the odd crime scene!

 

 

 

Followed this stoat kill for about 100 yrds of dragging the kill through the snow, untill we found fox prints following it up, and then the fox had got the stoats kill. Poor little bugger, all that effort, just to have your brekkie taken off you by a fox!

 

Took just the one dog this time, one of the young ones, they needed splitting up and working alone as there presence distracted the other from working, now Jed is doing it all on his own!

 

Watching for bolters after marking up!

 

 

 

Nailing them where they sit in the seat!

 

 

 

And of course the few runs we got, were a little easier than usual due to a bit of the soft stuff!

 

 

I got up to my usual trick's within minutes of being out!

 

 

had around 20 digs on Sunday, most bieng easy, and clearing the warrens with the hit squad within a short time.

Even covered areas where other ferreters covered around 3 weeks ago, we were pulling 2's and 3's out of ground we watched them do, even digging out the same holes they had done.

This is what I mean about guy's doing half a job, stay in bed lads, it's a better place for you.

 

Quite a long way from the vehicle (a mile and a half) we'd clocked up 27 rabbits, time to do a uturn as i'm the only one carrying them.

 

And got a mark off the dog, and disaster struck!

 

 

Under the snow were plates of rock, it took me 1 hr to dig around the rock, then the collar failed, and i had to smash out around the side and under where i could still hear the ferret working, thought i was going to be there untill night, but only one thing to do, keep digging.

Eventually managed to get the critter out, but could not reach the rabbit unfortunateley. That's the first kill left in this year for me, i hate that kills get left behind, it's just lazy to be honest.

 

So I started the journey back, with the full team, and 27 rabbits on one shoulder, stopping and changing shoulder along the way, got there ok to be honest, nearly had to carry the old feller as well!

Think it's how much broken English along with swearing he learnt from me to be honest! Why can't these call centre's be somewhere they understand people? (must admit, the guy's on the line were very helpfull and patient, and got the problem sorted for me!)

The blade is already the size of a teaspoon to start with Andy, really it's a bit too small, and lacks the angle on the head a little (it's a bit too straight!) for lifting a lot of the loose out from deeper digs. (3ft down)

It is a cracking spade for the shallower stuff (by the way it's a bulldog rabbiting spade).

I had a bulldog roundmouth I cut down years ago, it's been re-shafted 3 times, but there's not much left of the head now, this was ideal, a bigger head with more angle, plus a D handle rather than a T handle.

The D handle is ideal for getting a grip when it's cold and your hands are muddy!

There you go, a bonafide spade geek!

Now thats what i called ferreting.

Crackiing post and a great read: must admit, being 'darn sarf' I've never had the experience of ferreting in the snow: sounds a lot of fun! LOL

Everytime i read your posts Brimmer, i always think 'why the hell does he LIKE TO DIG???' but each to thier own. If i can move on quick with a ferret that will either bolt and not kill or bolt and kill and move on, then its good enough for me
