Peter Skellan 0
Hello all, First time post and completely genuine. I'm a middle aged airline pilot moving to a farmhouse in Herefordshire with permission on 600 acres (and a few of my own) - though my Father-in-Law. My application of for a Shotgun Cert and a FAC is in and I expect there will be no problems. My builder is putting in the bolts for a cabinet tomorrow. So. I need/want: A gun cabinet for 2 of my own shotguns, 1 rifle and a couple of guest guns that is quality and ideally would have an ammunition store. 1 good shotgun for me. Something *like* a Silver Pigeon 3. 1 Spare shotgun for guests or rough use. 1 rifle. Tikka T3 Varmint with 8 suppressor and a £600ish (maybe Zeiss) proper scope, Harris bipod and a nice case. I could spend a fortune. But I want to spend intelligently and I'm interested in your views. Ideally I'd like to do all of the above for a maximum of £5k including all the bits and frills (bags, chokes, cleaners etc). I want to fox and pigeon a lot, game on boxing day, have a mate over and shoot a few clays and own a very accurate hard looking rifle. I'd also like to go to a range twice a year and post a 300yd group that wouldn't be embarassing. There are many options. I'd be delighted to hear your preferences. I'm only 5' 6" and have short arms so bear that in mind.. Its a fantasy gun cabinet but I'm really going to get the kit and towards the end of this thread I promise I'll post a picture of all the kit that has been bought. So go on. Spend some time posting. I will be buying an I'm interested in your views. £5,000 budget for 2 * 12 bores, 1 * 223 rifle. Scopes, rings, cabinets - the works. I've not spent the last 10 years reading the shooting mags. You probably have and I'd like to tap into your knowledge... Best poster gets to come to my farmhouse, the Mrs will cook a roast dinner and you'll be invited to shoot the cabinet at my expense.. Thanks in advance... Peter Edited December 14, 2008 by Peter Skellan
Ratman2 2
Anyone been to Fantasy Island.
Peter Skellan 0
No its not Tracy Island. This really is someone with £4k to spend, an FAC and an open mind. At the moment I think I'll buy a t3 Varmint with a 4-9 40mm scope, a Beretta Silver Pigeon 3, White Onyx or maiiyybbee a Cynergy. Then a Jap spare gun. Short and stout and looking for good advice. I've read most that google can provide. I need to buy in March/April next year. Peter ps Yes its a covername. I'd rather not use a real name given family connections. Ta. SNAP SHOT 194
peter best advice i can give is buy a good rifle maybe sako 85 stainless synthetic.... get sako rings and bases zesis conquest scope 6.5x20x50 import from america, cheap and great quality, 1900 stg should cover it 2000 at most. then you will have a rifle that can shoot, buy the two shotties and cabinet together, then haggle on price, try the silver pidgeons and the browning 525 both quality, cabinet should not be a problem, infac very good cabinet, and ammo locker in most of them and deep enough for scoped rifles... then will will have quality.......your 5k budget should cover it all with change if you shop right.......... martin 332
The only advice that I feel I can give you is to try and get to shoot a few shotguns/rifles before you buy,a lot of decent shops also have a range of some sort or another, and,as you will be the main shooter, you need to have the final say.I do however feel that when purchasing a scope for a rifle that you want to do the business over 300yds,then you need to spend as much as you can afford on that alone. Most rifles nowadays will outshoot most of the people that buy them, but,Tikka would be a very good buy,I actually use a Browning 'A' bolt in .22lr,and,a Remington 700ADL in .243. I am very happy with the remington, and,it only cost £325.00.It was secondhand, and,to be honest, some of the best buys are in my mind to be found on the secondhand market.I don't think that the Sako 85's are anywhere as good as the 75's so get out there and try to find one, http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/ is a very good place to start for new or secondhand ......................good luck with your quest, and,I wish I was in your situation........martin. p.s. I went for the Shmidt & Bender 2.5-10x56 and found it to be absolutely brilliant(also bought secondhand for £400.00)
Peter Skellan 0
Thanks for the advice so far chaps. Not looked at Sako 85/75 so thats something to look at today. I don't really know how to rate a gunshop. I'd like to find a good one not too far away Herefordshire/Worcestershire/Shropshire and develop a good long term relationship with a quality dealer. However, I find it hard to know what to look for and what to ask. Hadn't considered importing from the USA. Though with the current strength (!) of the pound perhaps thats not so feasible at present. ssssh1forthepot 0
Get a mossberg 590 with a heat shield and ghost rings!!
Peter Skellan 0
Submitted the FAC and SGC today and ordered a Burton TCH/5 Gun Cabinet for £224 delivered incl VAT as a sign of bold confidence! The cabinet exceeds the BS standard but doesn't meet it - I'm hoping the police officer will see this as a good thing rather than a snag.. http://www.discountlocks.co.uk/Burton-TCH-...ch-fslash-5.htm I'm quite tempted by the Lancashire Tikka T3 Tactical for £775 on Guntrader with no picture in .223 Would need a moderator and a bipod and a scope so the costs are creeping up. I'm seeing some price cuts on Guntrader though.
IanB 0
If you fancy a cabinet the Brattonsound 10 gun cabinet is excellent, centrefire my own personal choice would be Sako or Tikka, I'd avoid the varmint though as they add extra weight, just get the standard hunter models As for shotguns its all down to personal choice but you won't go wrong with a silver pigeon and they hold their value really well.... For scopes if your on a budget the Bushnell Elite 6500 is worth a look maybe...
