Hi, I am thinking about applying for my FAC(probably in the distant future) but just got a few basic questions to ask.

 

What are the differences in a Centrefire and a Rimmy eg. range, power, caliber??

 

Whats a HMR?

 

Also what is the maximum effective range or say a .243?

 

Oh and what ft/lbs do rifles puit out?

But for now centerfire- the striker hit the casing in the center and have a bigger powder loads and normally are more powerful and are also reloadable.

 

Rimfire- the striker hits the outside of the casing and are not reloadable but are cheap as chips to buy normally less powerfull. come in subsonic for the silent treatment.

 

HMR= (i think) Hornady Magnum Rimfire

 

Distance on a 243 well i was with a chap that shot a muntjac at 600 yards dont know wether thats safe or not but he was a deer ranger so he knew what he was doing.

Here goes,

 

A Centrefire uses a separate primer to ignite the powder charge in the casing. As you can probably guess, the primer is in the centre of the bottom of the casing.

 

A Rimfire has the priming compound inside the rim of the case, hence, Rimfire.

 

As for Power, a Centrefire will always be more powerful than a Rimfire. Even the lowliest of the Centrefires, the .22 Hornet is throwing out 700+ ft/lbs of energy.

 

The .22 WMR, the most powerful of the rimfires, puts out 300+ ft/lbs. Some Difference! Even if you loaded subsonic centrefires, the energy figures would be more. (this is very uncommon )

 

Range? A comfortable range for the HMR & WMR would be out to 200 yards, a bit more sometimes. For .22 LR and .17 Mach2 comfortably 100 yards, and more if you are used to the drop.

 

Range of centrefires really depends on the shooter, the terrain and the Optics on the rifle. But as you mention a .243 then as far as a normal shooter can shoot would be my answer. Comfortably and humanely with normal shooting around 500 yards i'd say though, those with a lot of experience can push that out a lot further.

 

Huffski is perfectly right , HMR=Hornady Magnum Rimfire and just in case you were wondering, WMR=Winchester Magnum Rimfire and LR=Long Rifle.

 

As for the ft/lb's of different rifles, again as Huffski said, look on Wikipedia for the different calibres as they are all so different. You can have the .22LR with 100ft/lb of energy, upto and beyond the .50 BMG with 13,000 ft/lbs.

Nicely explained all the abbreviations can be confusing WMR HMR LR ect, but when broken down like you have SS it does not sound too daunting i am going for FAC myself in the new year as a bit of land i have is proving too difficult to rid of pests with just terriers ferrets and shotguns and all the info is greatly appreciated. Even though i did not start the thread i would have asked these questions sooner or later well done to all the replys, experience is good when you can share it.

budget should be whatever you spend on the gun spend the same on the scope if not more, good rule of thumb, buy good mounts and bases you WILL need them buy quality buy ONCE........buy cheap ...........will you know the story....

depending on calibre and gun make, factory, custom the sky is the limit,

what calibre are you after gun maker, second hand new, i'm not really up on the uk prices, but take a look around a few websites or call into a dealer,

then you may get an idea of rifle style, pro's and con's, etc then before you think of buying post to see anybody got any and what the views are,

check the net for information, sorry a bit vague but its the best i can do for now until you see something you like.......

A .22LR is a common move from air rifle, a CZ452 will cost around £250-£300, about half the price of a AA410!!!...and you don't need a bottle !!!

As deker says £250-300 for the cz452 or you can go further up the line and fork out £500+ then £100 will get you a decent rimfire scope(i have a simmons whitetail on my Hmr and for £115 i cant fault it at all), magnification is up too you 3-9 or 4-12 seems to be quite common among .22rimmys, then a box of 22 rounds is around £3-4.Then there are all the other add-ons if you wish too get them such as a moderator and bipod you can pick up a SAK mod for around £35 and a harris bipod wil range anywhere from £50 to £75 depending on spec. Then you will need your paperwork, FAC costs £50 or £60 as conterminous cert

 

A Grand Total of around £550

Depends on what it is the person wants to start out doing really. Are we talking target shooting? Or hunting? You can further narrow both of those down by the range or types of target shooting and the species you'd be looking to hunt.

For "game/vermin control you only need 1 piece of land (but the more the better obviously)..consider joining a club as well, apart from the experience you may also meet some "useful" people!!
