I try not to teach a dog in doors for this very reason, what I would now suggest is to attach a line to the dummy and real the dog in, praise the dog each time this usually rectifies the problem. if know joy attach the line to the dog

back to basics ther mate in my oppinion ,,, nothin wrong with training pups indoors ,,, its just a game at the end of the day so why not wait till the dog retrieves and then offer a reward ie a treat !!! [bANNED TEXT] u take the dog outside try to block all escape routes so he or she has to pass by you !!! Let the dog no you have treats on u so it has something to entaginise it to come to u , so the penny will drop eventually ,, the dog seams to have the brains mate you just have to nurture it to youre advantage ,, REMEMBER ALL TRAINING IS A GAME AND DESERVES A REWARD FOR GOOD WORK !!! even you will get an eago boost if you do a job and someone says chears mate you done a grand job there !!!! if that makes sense !!!! IN MY EXPERIENCE ITS WORKED FOR ME!!!

Use a long line in an enclosed space, as suggested previously an alley way is good. Start with short retreives and only do it 2/3 times. Throw the dummy (a gundog dummy is good as it is a similar weight to the quarry) then let the dog go with the longline attached. when it picks the dummy up use GENTLE pressure on the long line to get the dog back to you then take the dummy off it saying 'dead' as the release command. Praise in moderation a simple pat on the head and 'good dog' and maybe a small treat will be plenty. When you let the dog go to retreive its an idea to use the command you want to use in the feild to sent the dog onto its quarry. We use ffsss, nice short quiet command to send the dogs up. First master it with the dog with no distractions like other dogs, kids, cats, your mates etc. You can eventually practice this on the lamp too once its mastered in daylight, will eventually get the dog to go up the beam and follow the beam.

Dont go overboard on praise.

Dont overdo it, 2/3 times every couple of days will be fine.

Dont start off with long retreives, 5 ft start then gradually increase the distance you throw the dummy.

Dont change your commands.

Good Luck.
