Sterry 0
I can see why you are skeptable of this brimmer and i would love to be able to show you. even if this method is not 100% bomb proof it still has got my ferrets back withouth diggin or waiting hours for it to pop its head up for a second only to go back down. and that good enough for me, i do it as a hobby and have no problems hiding that, if i was to be paid to do it then i would obviously have collar and not rely solely upon this method however it is useful in my opinion. Does it not bother you that there could be a dead rabbit underground? even though you got the ferrets back , if you had collered up you would have known if there had been a kill , personally i dont know how you can deal with bolting rabbits & faffing around with a whistle & then failing that smoked salmon , just invest in a shovel in the long run it will be cheaper than buying smoked salmon Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
The only time my fezzer's come running to me is when I beat them with a rabbit Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
No need mate, i believe they will come out, with or without any coaxing of any kind. As long as you are happy with them that is all that matters at the end of the day. Quote Link to post
richie 1
ive tried this method, but i make a squelching noise before i feed them, & mine also associate the noise with feeding.. all i have to do is open the garden door, doesnt matter what time, & make the noise & all 8 of them will come charging out of their sleeping quarters & jump against the hutch doors & stay there untill fed.. i must admit though, this method only seemed to work once for me whilst out hunting "or could of been a coincidence" i located two of my workers 2.5 ft down at the base of a tree / hedge, i got 1 foot down & it was impossible to go further as there was thick roots everywhere, so i gave the squelchng noise a go, within 10 seconds one appeared, then shortly afterwards the other ! i thought result, but after that it never seemed to work again, im just putting it down to luck.. i still occassionally rattle a dead rabbit inside an entrance & make the call, & sometimes the ferret will latch onto the rabbit so i can pull him out, the quickest this ever happened was within a minute, but i dont reckon a ferret will give up the chase to come to the call, more like, when theres not much going on under they will investigate the noise... the few things that i do to try to prevent a lay up, is to feed them the night before & one hour before i go out in the morning, & half way through the day i give them a few livers & water... i know for a fact that mine will only appear once everything has bolted or after everything is dead, as yesterday, my large hob came out of an entrance & went straight over to two despatched rabbits & one after the other he locked onto their necks & shook them about, as soon as he saw they were dead, he went back under to get back to work.. this is only my personnal opinion, if a ferret was genuinely trained to come on call, then it would appear within a minute or less, but having to wait upto 10 minutes is just a ferret doing what it does.. rich Quote Link to post
The one 8,592
Nice if you own the land and only want a couple of rabbits and if your ferrets stick you whistle them out and your away ,BUT what and its a big what if your getting paid on a rabbit job and a hour after your away down the road the farmer see's rabbits appearing out a burrow youv'e just ferreted ?.You wouldn't last long on that ground .I will stick to what im doing which is if the rabbit doesn't bolt my ferrets will stay with it and i get the spade out Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
Your ferrets are obviously not top working ferrets, sorry to say. If my ferret was working a warren, with rabbits at home. They would not resurface what ever, especially if i was blowing a whistle! And i would be exstremly pissed if they did! You ferrets are coming to the surface on there own accord after 5 or 10 mins. Imagine whistling your dog, and it took 10 minutes to return!! You wouldnt class it as a trained animal now would you.... come on,. Quote Link to post
knocker 0
unless i'm doing it wrong, i want ferrets that will bolt rabbits if possible and kill if need be, as kay pointed out, it's not a nice thing leaving a dead/injured rabbit underground, so, if my ferrets kill, i want them to at least have the decency to stay with the rabbit so i can dig to it, all my ferrets go mental when i squeek/call/whistle them in the garden, some even come to me, one jumps unrealistic distances off the hutch roof to sit on my shoulder, when working and they are on rabbits, feck all shifts em........trained ferrets my arse Quote Link to post
