MINNIE 4
I WOULD SAY 11 TO 12 MONTHS MATE THEN FIND HER SOME EASY RUNS. IF YOU TAKE THEM TO YOUNG THEY SOMETIMES END UP YAPPIN AND ITS A HARD HABBIT TO BREAK. Quote Link to post
jackard 36
take the pup out when your out hunting with another dog and just keep it on the lead JUST TO WATCH ONLY until your pups about 12 mths old , then let it have an easy run , when it catchs its first let it watch a little longer then pick its slips ( easy 1s squatters and fields with walls round them ) dont over do the pup , and you will have no probs mate Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
It depends entirely on the type of lurcher you have: a little Bed/Whip cross will mature far earlier than a Deerhound cross. The bigger the dog the longer it takes to finish growing, both physically and mentally. I have in the past taken 9 month old pup out for a couple of runs: small lurcher to lurcher cross: she was 22". And I've waited until nearly 2 years old for a great heavy lump of a thing to finish maturing. Best thing is to get them out in the field mooching about from an early age, not pushing it but letting the pup learn a bit of field craft and how to negotiate fences, brambles etc. Once they are 100% sensible and safe by day then is time to try them on the lamp. All the best. Quote Link to post
